CES 2006: Dell's Hot New Machines
The most powerful gaming PC in the world, and a 20" laptop
by Gerry Block
January 6, 2006 - At lunch on Thursday, Michael Dell, founder of Dell computers, gave a select group of gaming journalists, including yours truly, a first glimpse at his company's latest and greatest gaming products. Dell was unequivocal in his enthusiasm for PC gaming, and backed up his statements with some rather impressive hardware announcements.
While many had suspected the release of a new edition of Dell's XPS gaming line, few knew quite how far Dell was willing to take things. With considerable flourish, Dell himself unveiled the XPS 600 Renegade, a limited edition gaming PC boasting not just a gnarly looking paintjob, but the be-all-end all of PC gaming: 4 Nvidia 7800 GPUs, running through dual card SLI boards at 16x, as well as a factory-overclocked Intel Extreme Edition 4.26 GHz CPU. By far the most powerful gaming computer yet known to man, Dell cited tech-specs at 1.3 billion transistors within the GPUs and 2 gigabytes of dedicated frame buffer memory, as well as benchmark figures of 41 Gigaflops per second and a total of 5.2 TFLOPs. Suffice to say, the Renegade is a beast of here-to-fore unknown power.
The XPS Renegade is so powerful, in fact, that, according to Dell, its performance figures rank each Renegade system as the 70th most powerful super-computer in the world. Through partnerships with Nvidia, the company that partnered with Dell to design the quad-GPU architecture, the four GPUs run unimpeded, able to produce benchmark results between 4 and 5 times that of a single GPU. If such numbers are to be believed, Nvidia and Dell have engineered so elegant a solution that no performance is lost in the communication between GPUs, a rare feat in terms of the history of multi-processor gaming computers. The Renegade also runs to Western Digital 150 GB 10k-rpm HDs in Raid-0, and Dell promises a solid road map for future upgradeability for the specially designed quad graphics cards.
Not only was Michael Dell blatantly proud of the internals of his new PC gaming behemoth, he was also beaming over the externals of the box, clothed in an impressive licking-flames design by Mike Divall, best known as the Killer Paint artist featured on popular TV-shows like Monster Garage. If any PC deserves to be burning up its environs, the XPS 600 Renegade is it. Journalists present at the lunch and later press conference were able to see the machine running Call of Duty 2 at an amazing 2560x1600 resolution on another new Dell product: a beautiful 30" WQXGA widescreen LCD. Needless to say, CoD2 has never looked so good.

Thats just sick. Four GPU's. This is going to cost a sick amount of money, but should be able to pull off amazing graphics.

This monster is alot more powerfull then the PS3. This thing comes out around spring too, near the PS3 launch date. But i cant beleave this is more powerfull than the PS3...I cant accept that.
Oh wait i think its cause it has quad SLI graphic cards and a factory-overclocked Intel Extreme Edition 4.26 GHz CPU , and the PS3 only has the RSX and CELL, guess I'll buy this in a couple of years when the price drops on this, I can just imagine how much this thing will cost.
P.S Isnt that overclocked speed to high, so wouldnt that thing just overheat or does it have one of those specail cooling devices other than fans.

I am going to get it the day it comes out, that just makes my Alienware Area 51 ALX look look outdated.

How many powerful computers are you going to get? You said that you got a $12,000 computer and something else. Wow you really like your computers just like Jay Leno likes his cars  .
This Computer is just to much to think about. 5.2 TFLOPS is the total power can just blow away any other computer made. The PS3 sadly isn't as powerful as this computer but at least it won't cost more then $8000  .
How much will this computer sell for? My guess is $13000.
Yeah. This one actually gives me the thought of wanting one. It's so damn sexy.
Shame it ustes intel, they suck for gaming and get totally owned by AMD.
I want alienware to bring out a quad SLI system with an Fx-57 that will just totally blatter the hell outta this sytem.

I don't truse Dell, I never liked their PC's, and that thing probably cost as much as a College education.

It would not surprise me. But still, it is over twice the power of the PS3, has four GPUs... blimey, to say the least.
This'll make PC game developers overclock their games too. My poor HP Pavilion 714a can't take that kind of stress! It can barely play KOTOR...

Wow you must be rich...whats your job again  .
But I doubt any PC developer would make a game so powerfull it will need all this power, I think only one thing will test the strength of this beast and that is.....Windows Vista, that ram hog is gonna make this pc sweat.

Yeah this PC looks nice but I like the X1800 better than the 7800 series. The GPU is a little noisy but the visuals kick the 7800's behind. I think they should use four of those with a little Crossfire mode in there man that will be sick!

They should use 4 RSXs. And a Cell. And maybe 4 sticks of 4GB RAM. Then I'll buy it :) .
Still, too too too expensive. I'd say it'd be cheaper upgrading the computer you have now than buying the whole new thing because of the snazzy paint job.

I know he said that I read that a long time ago, that was just sarcasm.
Man dell has gone insane. Why would anyone need 4 gpus, especially with an intel cpu, that would be one of the biggest bottlenecks ever. Also how is dell cooling this thing?

4 GPU's does barely anything more than a single graphics card. It was proven in a test that when a single 7800 GTX was used vs. dual 7800 GTX that there was barely any improvement. I've seen it firsthand anyway with some friend's comps. There is hardly any noticeable performance increase. In the test there was an average of 5-7 FPS increase on FEAR.

Well, if there isn't that much difference between one 7800 and four, it's not worth spending the extra (lots of) money on. It'd probably be chapear to upgrade your current PC.
Also how is dell cooling this thing?
You didn't think the paint job was coincidental, did you?

Do you wanna see a picture of a Quad SLI board with cards on it, here it is:

I wan to see a 3dmark bench

There using fan cooling for 4 gpus stacked right beside each other and a 4ghz intel cpu. Good luck to who ever buys this, you'll have to spend another couple grande for phase cooling or a realy nice water cooling setup. Are those cards overclocked?

Go to this link to look at the 3DMarks scores and other things with it, but it personally don't think it's worth buying this.

thats a sick pc. but its a waste of money.
just be cause it has 4 video cards not mean that the grapchis.
willl be better

Definitely not worth buying this! If rumours are true and G71 core slams 13000 3Dmark points to table with stock settings and quad-SLI barely hits 12000 marks!
fantasy: Quad gf7800 == WOW
reality: Quad gf7800 in SLI == not even worth a try

I wonder, if you have the money to buy this setup, then you probably have the money to buy 4 g71 gpu to replace the 7800 gtx that is in it. Then you would have an even more crazy powerful computer.

You're Joking right? Please tell me you're joking.
You are saying that 4 nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX 512mb cache GPUs all Sli'd together would not make the graphics any better on a PC?
What if you compared it to a nVidia GeForce 6800 GT? Your saying that those 4 GPUs couldn't produce better graphics?
The only thing that probably could prevent that is a crappy power source.
Edit: Well, if you also had no memory and a Pentium 2 CPU then the graphics might take a hit...But it wouldn't be because of the cards, it would be because the CPU can't keep up with everything going on.
God that thing must take a crap load of power...
P.S. I use Dell and I find them reliable, and well put together. Though they are getting expensive and so you find yourself starting to pay more for the Name (like Alienware) then the components.
