Unlike other territories the home console market in Japan hasn't grown, in fact it has shrunk. There is only room for one big expensive console and the Playstation is already there, that pair of old slippers. There's no demand for another console because most of them play on handhelds anyway. That's why the Xbox fails there
Numbers are way down but xbox is still running the show in the US.

Microsoft has recently announced the amount of Xbox 360 Units sold in the month of May 2013.
The amount of units that were shifted in the month of May 2013 were 114,000. With the Xbox 360′s new design revealed at E3 it seems that Microsoft has so plans in the near future to ditch support for the Xbox 360 and that they plan on supporting it for at least a few more years while the next-generation of consoles kicks in. The new design could also show Microsoft’s plan on continuing to stay ahead of the PS3 in terms of sales in the upcoming months.
Hate to think what the others sold.
Limping towards the next generation....
They're both going to need a price drop. People are holding off right now but with a nice price cut they will sell. I'll get a 2nd 360 and a new PS3 if they do.

The overall industry brought in $593.3 million from the sale of hardware, software and accessories (read: Skylanders toys and digital currency giftcards) at brick and mortar retail locations. June was also the first month of availability for the Ouya, the Kickstarter-funded Android microconsole that kicked off a growing craze for Kickstarter-funded Android microconsoles. "Retail sales for Ouya (not counting direct sales through ouya.tv) and were relatively light for a new console," an NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement. "This may be due to the lack of a major marquee title driving consumers to seek out the console, low awareness due to Ouya being a new brand, or low inventory volume due to manufacturing constraints."

Microsoft FY 2013 Results. Xbox 360: 9.9 million shipped
with exclusives apparently selling hardware, surprised at PS3 being so far behind following the release of TLoU.. i'd have thought they should of at least equalled 360.
do we know what the numbers are for the PS3?
oh ok, NPD. I keep forgetting.
Considering Sony made that funny video about how to share games on your PS4, it's obvious they aren't shy about taking shots at Microsoft. The fact they haven't taken shots at Microsoft over passing the 360 leads me to believe it just hasn't happened. Why else would they not announce a change of positions in the console race if it favored them?
it's possible that they might still be close but they don't want to say anything until it's clearly a trend. it would be embarrassing to announce something and have it change the next month.
i don't think they're that far apart.
