Definitely The Yakuza series would be The Closest to it
Looking back it was nostalgia for me. I can't look at the game the same anymore when it's been surpassed not only within the FF franchise but by other games in general. The block characters are terrible. No voice overs. I just have a hard time getting immersed in it these days. The story and characters were good, i'll give you that. I just can't call it one of my top games anymore when i've played much better. I guess it was just never my favorite even though i played through it probably 10 times like everyone else.
It's still an awesome game though. That's the beauty of the Final Fantasy series. Even your least favorite games within the franchise are still great games. Everyone has their favorite. For me it's FFX and FFVIII.
Shooters were pretty big as early as the Goldeneye 007 days. You just didn't know it because it wasn't the internet age.
But yeah, online gaming and Call of Duty 4 made shooters what they are today. It's the one game that everyone is trying to copy.
Bugger all nothing has ever giving me on the edge story twists that FF7 did
I'm quite sure call of duty 4 copied counter-strike's simple game mechanics, because they knew it would be popular.
it's just the difference in themes that makes it less obvious.
In retrospect , I'd have to say Uncharted 2. I remember how thrilled and impressed I was with that game. Usually it's been RPG's that take that top spot for me, but the only one I want, the devs refuse to release.
You make a really good point. Although this whole argument of what game is like FFVII is kind of odd as the discussion leans towards what the defining game has been
COD4 really is a game that helped define and change for that matter, the rest of the generation. You're right there was heaps of popular FPS games around, but they just didn't reach the popular mass appeal that COD has now. People who have never touched game before play COD - and possibly move into other games and genres as well. COD4 in particular was a huge game changer this gen.
There is probably no game that has equaled FFVII in terms of exacting the same kind of impressions on the generation (I'd argue Metal Gear Solid was up there with FFVII, but I digress). All the most praised games of our generation are moreso known for their revolutionary elements rather than being revolutionary as complete games. For example, everyone seems to love Uncharted, but everyone also loves to name that one other game that's "just as good" or something. And it's usually a different game from person to person.
I'd say the closest is CoD4 (with UC2 as a close second), though. But again, FFVII's impact during its time is beyond what any game this generation has done, IMO.
Heck I still pop in CoD4 sometimes and play it!
The only 2 released games that could be considered, I think, are Cod4 and Uncharted 2.
I think (and I hope) that The Last of Us will be this game though. The strides it is making with AI-interaction will be hugely influential, imo.
^Yeah, TLOU looks promising. The best part is, it already seems to have serious potential and they haven't even shown us gameplay with the main enemies yet (those broccoli-headed things that seem sort of like zombies).
I think could be a contender, too. We'll see.
I'm assuming that the OP is saying which game has created a significant impact for you just like how VII did for millions. To me, this generation was easily Uncharted 2. I just couldn't believe what Naughty Dog had shown on E3 and the satisfying impression I had after playing it.
you nailed Arkham City, that game was just amazing, platinumed it and i still want more :(
Besides that maybe MGS4, Uncharted 2 and i can't really see anything else that can compare to that FF7 feel of awesome.
I'm curious to know what's the "FFVII" of the last generation.
This generation is not over and you can only know years later if the games stood the test of time.
Honestly?...nothing. I don't think anything will live up to that plateau for me ever again quite frankly.
FF versus 13. :) ohhh but could it have been? Maybe in 2014 we will find out.
I honestly don't think any game of any franchise will ever reach that level that those games did in the PSone gen. Everything was new and never done before during the PSone generation. The games that get released in this gen are always compared to those and instantly fail because the impact is not as big as it was then. Everything has been done so it will be hard to almost impossible for developers to give us the mind-blowing experiences that we got in the past.
