With the Twitch stream still going on as I type this, Unreal Tournament 4 has been officially announced. Not only this but the entire game is going to be FREE! That's right FREE!
I'm going to add more tidbits in this post when I get back from Badminton tonight.
Edit: Right back. Now to add what I can remember.
- Unreal Tournament 4 is going to be 100% free
- All the DLC is going to be 100% free
- The core game mechanics are going to be programmed by Epic
- If you own Unreal Engine 4 ($19/m) then you can contribute to the game
- You can upload your mods, skins, textures, game packs, genre packs, scripts and more to the Marketplace
- The Marketplace is like an all in one system where users can choose the mod they want and have it install with a single click
- The Marketplace is open for every developer meaning that you can set a price if you want to or have it free
- The game will be based around the community with full community input with Epic on the forums
- The game will only be coming to Windows, Mac and Linux... yes LINUX!!!
So where does Epic get their money from? The 5% of every sale on the marketplace. If you think about it it's an ingenious way to get people to actually subscribe $19/m to start making mods and helping create Unreal Tournament 4 and you know what? I'm going to do that too.
If I do actually go ahead and get the engine, who's wanting to help out and start making some maps? :D
Missed the livestream, did they show some footage?
EDIT: I just tuned in and saw a guy with blue hair... did he lose a bet or something? lol
Have fun with badminton :)
I feel like playing UT99 now, lol!
I played UT99 an hour before the stream and damn the game played WAY too quickly!

WOW, this is working much like an idea James "2good" Harding had a couple years ago.
Varsh I remember some old games not working very well on dual cores, (back when dual cores were new) they ran at double speed, you needed a windows patch to sort it. But something tells me that is not the issue.
You're just getting old! jk ;-) As far as I remember, it's just perfect. But you can adjust game speed (offline and server-side).. The PS3 game was way too slow for my taste.

BBK.. Tapa. Talked.
IT's not that I'm not used to the speed, it's that the game actually did run too quickly like there was no frame limiter of something.
I read that installing a newer openGL renderer will fix the over speed issue.
Eeeexcellent, hopefully they'll put up the source code soon so that I can start building my levels for it.
I hope this actually brings back arena shooters, competition play, and FPS modding like the good old days. Last unreal game was basically just a tech demo for the engine. The arena shooter genre hasn't seen any action since UT2K4 or Quake 3
Can't wait to see Cliffy's own take on arena shooters. Seems that he liked the parkour traverse part of Titanfall. Soon we'll be playing a Skaarj themed arena shooter :P
this is a neat and sustainable idea. i'm so glad to see a PC game that won't come out on consoles and thus be castrated.
they need a proper UT game, i think this is going to be one of those UT games that last 10+ years. they might come out with a sequel once next-gen comes around but not sure if they will even then.
There is no definitive next gen in PC land.
CPUs and GPUs come out every year, maybe twice in one year.
but they compete with consoles indirectly. which is why i didn't say definite because it's possible UT may keep a base that is loyal but at some point you have to keep up with the visuals. maybe they won't but it would be normal to do so. 10 years down the road, this game is going to look fugly. again, not saying they will but it's possible.
oh and there are generations within PC as well, it's just not as absolute as consoles. but it's tied to consoles, mostly directly, in some ways indirectly (PC exclusives have higher competition when next-gen of console is here).
why do you think PC hardware is getting a boost? it's due to the next-gen consoles. the hardware you guys have now, is going to be mid-range by next year.
Go back to your poverty station and repo box you peasant gamer.
Repo-box.. PovertyStation.. It has a nice ring to it. I like it! ;)
