I can confirm you don't need a network connection to play PS plus games. I played both Mortal Kombat and Gravity rush while I was offline. Hell even in the plane in plane mode!

No, it was the HDMI port but it was removed to reduce cost. However, the HDMI port is present in the developer version of the console (the one used to develop on it)
