Could this be the return of Game Cartridges in 2 years?
New Thumb Drives could store TERAbytes!
http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscell.../10/ion_memory
"their memory is, bit-for-bit, one-tenth the cost of -- and 1,000 times as energy-efficient as -- flash memory"
At this prices, 50 to 100 GB drives would be very cheap and may be an alternative to Disc media for Games and Even Movies.
They don't mention read times, so we will see.

It's gonna come down to what is cheaper to produce.

Cant bootleg a cartridge. That's what it comes down to.
Opinions are like Hobos, they all stink.

i doubt they will ever use cartridges or any kind of flash based media
its cheaper to mass produce discs
as for a 100gb Blu-ray disc, i doubt they will need more then that for a game in a long long time

I've seen a new disk they're working on called Holographic Versatile Disk, it'll be able to hold up to 3.9 terabytes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc, maybe these two will have the next format war.

unless they become 75-100GB cartridges.... no they probably wont.. unless they do decide to actually prevent copying of games and what not.

Um... we have CD's that can hold nearly 4 Terabytes.. =/
This technology is already outdated.

It's probably not going to happen. It is an interesting alternative. It will work way better for future portable systems. It would increase battery life quite a bit.

Just mentioning cartridges brings me back to the good ol days of blowing on the cartridge and NES, Trying so slightly to rub the back of the Cartridge on the NES. Why can't we get a Mike Tyson's Punchout for PS3.

Ok they can hold alot but still. Can they offer the same quality? Can they outperform discs? Can they be stores like discs? Can they run like discs?
I just dont see it happening. This is good for me because i love theese things for my PC files but ill never play games off them lol. I rather use discs any day.

Can you run a game from a flashdrive?

Im back.

Aren't all these high capacity discs (protein and HVD) still very far from being up to the terabyte level and being able to be mass produced. The latest HVD published standard is for 200GB, plus it takes 2 lasers to read. Good, but not much better than Blu Ray, plus more expensive and takes a new tech.
This thing is supposedly 2 years out, and could plug right into the PS3 day one.

Always thought this would be the next stage of portable media - particularly for movies and such if they can get past the data transfer rate.
No moving parts for the win. Plug in the movie, watch, unplug it

Why not play games off of em? I've played plenty of smallish, but impressive, games off of flash drives on my pc, it's not that inconcievable for big games to run off of them in the future.
PS3's firmware runs off of flash
Disc based media neccesarily the defacto ideal format, not that flash drives or carts are either. I dunno why you'd toss either of them out as "ill never play games off them lol""It's a wonder you still know how to breathe"

There would need to be an incredible new sort of bus for the information to be read quickly enough to making next-gen (after PS3) gaming feasible. Also, for those saying you cant bootleg a cartridge, you've obviously never been to Thailand. Or seen what you can do with GBA and DS carts. As of now, USB2.0 is far too slow to be used as a bus for streaming game content.
