    PSP Hacked by Homebrewers Again

The latest PSP firmware, version 2.60, has been hacked, potentially opening the door to not only homemade software but scores of illicit, emuluated games across multiple firmware versions.

PSP Updates website regular "Fanjita" is proving to be a thorn in the side of Sony and its PSP security efforts. Although the latest hack only allows gamers to play a version of Tetris on their PSPs, it may eventually enable gamers to play emulated software from the NES to the arcade.

Of course, the ability to play emulated games on a PSP is nothing new, but those who had anything over firmware version 2.0 were previously out of luck as far as homebrew gaming was concerned.

PSP Updates seems quite cavalier about the accomplishment, saying "Fanjita just keeps on crackin' Sony's efforts to keep us from our homebrew!" Comments following the post often reflected pleasure in sticking it to Sony: "Congrats Fanjita... this is great... I'm laughing my a-- off at Sony."

Playing countless classic games on a PSP may be appealing to many, but would-be hackers often end up rendering their systems useless or crippled after going through the series of firmware upgrading and downgrading that is required for extensive homebrew and emulated play.

Sony will likely be releasing a firmware update shortly.

Are you bloody out of your mind? Seriously man, without the hacking of the PSP there wouldn't be so much homebrew stuff and a -SNES Emulator on the PSP-. It all makes up for the lack of great games.

I haven't even updated my PSP at all, and I have one of the first batches in America. Maybe I should.

More Homebrew is bound to happen and in a way all the feautures that comes with homebrew is appealing. Maybe Sony should just add those features that homebrew has into their new updates. I don't know.

Actually, if they are able to home-brew the PSP system with a firmware of 2.0+ that has the web-browser, I believe that'll be the most popular firmware. Mostly because people want both but can only have one which the obvious choice is the web-browser.

I would love playing SNES-Games on a PSP. It just makes it all for the fun adding onto a small list of games. Portable and compact instead of laptop and unfun. Anyway, I actually want PSP to be hacked, but only to the extent of allowing home-brew games and nothing like tampering with the system...AKA Virus

Awsome, i was really hoping for some emulation! I thought i'd have to wait a year for homebrew to come to v2.6...Now i just got to wait a couple more weeks for them to get emulation programs on there!

I could see Sony making a huge profit off of emulation if they'd go with it. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Sony needs to figure out a way to legally emulate and sell these games.

Well the easiest games to be legal to emulate would be the Sega games. Obviously, Sega doesn't have a console competeing and certainly doesn't have a portable unit competing, they could allow Sony to use their games for emulation...

The Nintendo games however, that's a fat chance. With Nintendo coming out with a console that can play all it's past games, and a portable unit, no way in hell would Nintendo allow Sony to emulate them.

Too bad though, there are a lot of cool classics from Nintendo that can be emulated.

There's no way to 'legally' emulate them. SNES Home-Brew = You are using Nintendo's property. The only thing they can do is "intentionally" let a part of the home-brew easily cracked.

Careful with emulators. Obviously something illegal isn't covered by a warranty so if your psp gets messed up, you're pretty much screwed.

I'm hoping these "hacks" become more widespread for several reasons:

    - I would like to play SNES and (hopefully) PSX games that I have legally and legitimately boughten.
    - I would like to extend the service life of my PSP UMD Disk drive by using images of purchased games on a memory stick instead of running them from the slower and extremely battery power intensive UMD disk drive.
    - I believe homebrew applications would endow benefits that would overshadow the potential negatives of Piracy.

[LIVE] Free Mercenaries 2 DLC this month

EA has announced that a free Mercenaries 2: World in Flames content pack - Total Payback - will come trundling onto PlayStation Network on October 20.

The update includes six new playable characters to bolster the original trio. Four of the newcomers have names and faces - Blanco, Fiona, Ewan and Eva - but the identities of the remaining two are secret. We're betting one of them's Jack Thompson. Also featured are some tasty cheats such as infinite health and ammo, weapon and vehicle unlocks.

You can expect a second content pack in November, though EA hasn't announced this one as a freebie. Regrettably, the Xbox 360 version will be getting its Total Payback update first on October 13.

Mercenaries 2: World in Flames is the current generation sequel to one of the pioneers of the open-world action genre. Set in a wartorn Venezuela, it casts the player as a lone killer-for-hire out to obliterate the businessman who double-crossed him. Explosions are plentiful.
