Sony's PlayStation 3 will this month be updated to allow it to support Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 - the version of the optical disc spec that enables picture-in-picture.
The claim was made this week by senior Sony executive Don Eklund, who oversees Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's technology policy, including Blu-ray Disc support.
Eklund made the comment during the High-Def 2.0 conference held in Los Angeles, US trade title Home Media Magazine reports.
The firmware update will allow the PS3 to fully support discs like Germany's Neues vom Wixxer, believed to be the world's first BD to use Profile 1.1 features. Even the disc's producer, Imagion, admits there aren't an players in Europe capable of delivering these features, German-language site Heise Online reports.
In addition to picture-in-picture - used to enable video rather than audio-only commentaries, for example - Profile 1.1 adds support for secondary audio and video decoders. It requires a player to have at least 256MB of on-board memory.

There goes one tremendous advantage HD-DVD used to have over Blu-Ray. Just about the only one, if I remember correctly.

By divx playback you mean video files from your computer such as .avi .mp4 etc?

I am stunned that some people appear to love their Playstation(1,2,3) or Xbox(360) more than I love the Denver Broncos.
Trust me, it's sad

From HiDefDigest re: Hairspray
so it's not "real" pip, just a section of the film re-encoded with the pip built in.the PiP track on this disc is a combination of sections of the film which have been re-encoded with a burned-in video window, and seamless branching. As such, this feature should be compatible with all Blu-ray hardware.)

That's lovely, sony. So we have BR 1.1, Divx incoming, the info bar, about a thousand variations of the PSN store (regionally and by platform), and a second lifey thing.
How's about loads of games. That would be just neat.

you do know sony don't make every single game coming out don't you? i'm tired of people asking sony to release games when you should ask tother publishers or developers to release games. it's annoying to see people blaming sony for no games when there are other companys that makes games to be released on the ps3.
and you know what would be really "neat" you would stop complaining

I hope this doesn't mean a "new and improved" release of 300 is coming...
No, I'm not a fanboy. I'm a fan of games.

Did I mis read that article or did he say that apart from the PS3 there are no other players that can currently make use of this feature?!? OK, so all future players will but what about all the early adopters? The price you pay I guess. So it's a somewhat early shout of victory over HD DVD seeing as no one can actually use it yet.

I think that it is part of the BD player spec that the firmware can be upgraded, either via network or through an on disc Java update.
Whether existing players have the processing oomph to decode another video stream (albeit lower resolution) is a different question of course.

Well you know they also get to watch movies together, so long as all people have that movie, and while they're watching, they can send text messages that pop up on the screen! >.<
I don't know which container files they'd allow. I heard a rumor that it's going to be DivX certified, so you can put them on your PS3 too, not just your computer.
