From what I heard, the deal is actually done or is only to be finalized. I guess im happy, even at 15M Euros. I am just a little cautious because he's only had one good year (he's never been this hot before, ever) and he's only spent two years in the top flight of french football. And Ligue 1 is not like the EPL. It seems like a tall order for someone like giroud to take on. However if RVP stays (fingers crossed), then that should help ease him in.
Anyway, I hope we can still get M'vila. And I really do wish that Wenger would look more outside of french football when considering signings.

Yeah it's crucial that RvP stays, because I'm not too sure about Giroud being the main man because of the reasons you cited Dinamo. He'll definitely need time IMO

Aw@the Arteta and Alonso picture!

The BBC and Sky Sports are reporting that Arsenal have signed Olivier Giroud for 12 million. Assuming Van Persie stays, that's Podolski, Van Persie and Giroud.. what a strike force! Now all we need is M'Vila and we have a very solid team with a great amount of depth going forward/midfield in a long time.

What do you guys make of this talk about Theo waiting to see if RVP re-signs before he makes his decision on his future with Arsenal?

The only genuine City ITK (in the know) believes City have cooled down on the prospect of signing RVP, attention has been turned elsewhere.
This was posted nearly 20 hours ago;
This morning Goal.com are running the same story. So either Goal use Twitter as a source or there is some truth in it.

Giroud looks like he could be a good signing for us but it's another risk, a big risk. It frustrates me so much that we'd rather sign completely unproven players from France, most of which turn out to be flops, than buy players from better leagues. Ligue 1 isn't even good value anymore, we always overpay.
I think when a player like Theo Walcott can stall on a deal then the club and football in general has to take a long hard look at itself. The world has gone mad. He's so lucky to be at a massive club like Arsenal. Who else would have him? None of the other top 4 clubs for certain. It should be the other way round, and it might well be. Arsenal should be telling Theo to prove he's worth a pay rise (which he aint).
dc if you guys get Cavani I might cry. He's my favourite striker in the world.

Yeah, I think Walcott overestimates himself too much. I'm glad he doesnt have a mouth to match his ego like many other players but i'm with Cyn on this one. Walcott can sometimes be the most dangerous player on the field and is a great weapon. The problem is, a player like Arshavin can also sometimes be the most dangerous player on the field, but we all know how consistent that is.

I agree Cyn. He is a decent enough buy but there is a huge amount of risk in signing a player like that - despite his goals last season, he is indeed unproven. But I'm hoping he can fit in well the same way Koscielny did from the same league, and they seem to be good buddies so that's always a plus! Whilst I agree with what you're saying, we simply can't afford to go out and buy those top strikers that play in those top leagues, we can't attract them with those lucrative whore contracts, or the guarantee of winning trophies - sadly. But there's definitely some gems out there that all to often end up at other teams, probably because we uhm and ah too often.
I must sound like such a pessemist sometimes to you guys
. I used to be different, I swear! But I keep my feet firmly grounded when it comes to Arsenal nowadays. Football has changed
-
@Walcott. If it's true that he's stalling on us he can fuck off. Simple as. There were rumours about a month or so ago that he was holding out for a 100k+ contract, again, if this is true, he can do one. We may have some dribble in our squad but it's not as though Theo Walcott is irreplaceable. Robin van Persie on the other hand...
For reference. Where did these kind of guys go?

I think we can afford to make a big signing though. I think we can easily afford to in fact. Sure we can't do what Real and Chelsea do and buy 5 marquee £30m players every single summer, and to be honest I'd be horrified if we did because it would mean the Uzbek bought the club. But we definitely can make one big £25-30m signing every couple of years. That's within our finances to do and it wouldn't affect our other cheaper transfers.
I always say that there's two areas of the pitch that you can't mess around in, the first is in goal (which we have spectacularly dicked about in for about 7 years now) and the second is up front and by and large you get what you pay for. Goalscorers cost money. I'm not foolish enough to think we could lure away a top striker who is already at a big club, like Benzema for example. But the likes of Cavani who is a sick player and not at a big club, we should be seizing the opportunity here and at least throw our hat into the ring. But instead we faff about looking at rookie frenchies like always.
And yes I'm the most pessimistic miserable cunt here
But still even I can appreciate that signing slightly uninspiring players is better than signing nobody at all !

Apparently there's talk we're after Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle now, according to a reputable French media source.
Chelsea are also said to be after him, but he has apparently said that he'd rather go to Arsenal than Chelsea.
Nice!

I just don't know anymore. We get told we got the money, yet we struggle to strengthen in the way a big club is meant to, all whilst we flip tidy profits year on year. I did say that we can't attract those kind of huge players, but the likes of Cavani like you mentioned, or Falcao when he was in Portugal would have been fantastic buys. They're proven! They score goals and make goals.
Although I got ushered in with the hype that surrounded Chamakh when he came to us, the fact is that he hadn't managed more than 13 goals in a season, for 10 seasons. Thank fuck he was free, albeit on wages that he never deserved. At least Giroud has got some sort of goal scoring history
I fully understand that Arsenal FC is first and foremost a business, but it seems like we've become too focused on turning profits and hitting that CL jackpot money yearly. Sure, we could afford that marquee player every couple of years, but from the board's point of view - what's the point? Wenger's sorcery guides us to at least 4th every single year while selling an established player for multimillions. The Arsenal board must love it.
I've laid into Wenger's tactics numerous times, but he does overachieve with the resources available to him. But, he doesn't help himself when he's willing to share around wages to players that are underserving of such salaries and then ignore very good players in the transfer market, and not to mention some stupid tactical decisions during games. It's a bit of the board and a bit of Wenger.
One thing's for sure though, without Wenger I don't think any other manager would guide us to the CL with what seem like the restrictions placed on him. Again, I could be completely wrong, but that's how it seems on the outsideLast edited by Nitey; 06-20-2012 at 17:20.

Thanks to Final for the sick sig!

06-26-2012 #4767Sweet. A front 3 of RvP, Podolski and Giroud will be interesting! Man, if Jack can rediscover his pre-injury form, he'll have a field day playing behind those boys. Be interesting to see how Wenger makes it all work though, cos I can't see Giroud warming the bench, considering we paid £12m for him. But then if he were to play we'd have to move RvP to the right, after he's come off his best goal scoring season ever lol. Furthermore, Podolski played up front the whole of last season for Cologne.Gunners manager Arsene Wenger intends to utilise Giroud in a front three alongside fellow new signing Lukas Podolski and Robin van Persie.
3 strikers playing across the front, interesting. Options are always great for a team looking to achieve, but what of Walcott, Gervinho and Arshavin?
Good to see we're getting shit done this early.
Welcome Olivier.
Edit:

Mission: Recruit Montpellier's Olivier Giroud : COMPLETE
Koscielny is such a BOSS. Can't say it enough lol.

Well it seems we're solving the problems we have scoring when RVP is unavailable. Now we need to solve the problem of creating enough good chances when Jack is unavailable

The recent Van Persie news has my heart broken.. What can we do Robin to make you stay? Arsene Wenger also stuck by him all these years. I'll still keep my sig since this saga isn't done yet but really hope the club can convince him to stay.. After all these years we've supported him.
Losing our Captain two years in a row? What's going on with the board?

Players move on deal with it? I have no idea what is really going on behind the scenes but if he moves to another club after all these years that Arsene has supported him.. it would be in poor taste. (Especially disrespectful if it's another Premier League club) I can only hope he retires at the club like Bergkamp but it is not looking likely.
What players can we buy really to satisfy him? We aren't Chelsea or Manchester City and we've signed Giroud and Podolski. I hope that the club issues a statement in response.. those are really damning statements by Van Persie of the club and if there is no statement made.. it would be ridiculous.Last edited by Firefox; 07-04-2012 at 18:18.
