Best directors of all time?

*COUGH* Quentin Tarantino *COUGH*
Spielberg is okay. His movies from a while ago are great, but lately his movies haven't been all that great. Tarantino writes, directs, and usually produces all of his movies. He only has 4 movies, well 5 kind of.
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction (My personal favorite)
Killbill
Killbill vol. 2
He was also in a few movies, executive produced, and wrote the storyboard of a few movies. He directed an episode of CSI, directed a scene or two of the movie "Sin City".
He is really an amazing director.

I vote for Peter Jackson for best director.

spielberg i think is best, he can do so many different types of movies. he goes from war of the worlds to munich not many directors can pull that off. quentin is ok but i think sometimes he gets too caught up in his writing.
also i enjoy m. knight as a director. now if he can only get off that twist ending binge hes on and concentrate more on better story telling.

I voted P.J...No one and I mean no one could have done LOTR and kept it that true to the story.
Not to mention with him Directing, he was able to win 12 academy awards for LOTR: RotK
Which btw is a fantasy
LOTR: RotK Is currently tied for most Academy Awards with Titanic.
P.J. Is the man. That is why I'm glad he's helping with the Halo movie."It's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace.

Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna
get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are." ~Easy Rider (1969)

Tim Burton has always been one of my favourite directors.

I voted for Peter Jackson, it would have been Spielberg but he's gone pretty much down hill and I never really cared for his movies.
Although I will say, P.J. is one of my favorite directors but no where near my favorite director.
I'm not even sure who that is, I just know that he's not really there yet.

i think we need to clarify something the title of the thread is the best director of all time. not who is our favorite. i think its hard to compare lets say scorsese or spielberg's body of work with that of peter jackson. although lord of the rings trilogy was great, thats only 3 movies, spielberg has at least a dozen movies which can be considered to be classsics. same with scorsese. we need to look at the body of work and not just a few movies.

Best director of all time is subjective, it's all opinion hence why there is a poll.
A classic to one person may not be a classic to another person even though the general perception is that it is a classic.

I should be Patriotic and vote for Peter Jackson but Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino are my favourite writer/directors.
Special mention: John Woo.Necrophillia:The uncontrollable urge to crack open a cold one.

You forgot Ang Lee (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon..Brokeback Mountain) and Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers)
Peter Griffin: "C'mon, let's go drink 'til we can't feel feelings anymore."

I second James Cameron, for The Terminator (the first one) more than anything else. T2 was great but I liked the first one the best. In my house, nobody utters a certain wannabe sequel that begins with 'T' and ends eith '3'.
I also have a great time with Quentin Tarantino's and Robert Rodriguez's films, but I'm not sure I'd call them the greatest of all time. Jim Cameron is up there though.*WARNING* The above was typed by a shameless Metal Gear Solid fanboy!

Out of this list I went with Clint Eastwood. He's been able to render human emotion to its most raw portions, then make a scene explode with such intensity that is beyond anybody else.
However I still prefer Zhang Yimou's style of directing over everybody elses for drama and action.

I agree, Clint is awesome, and out of those, I'd have to pick him.

Well, I just watched "War of the Worlds" for the first time. All I can say is "wow!". That isn't a good "wow" either. I came to the conclusion that almost every spielberg movie has a horrible ending, imo.
