I have to agree on this one as well. From my personal view, I have a friend who's not really a 360 fan, but has one because he's a Sega fan and the 360 reminds him of the Dreamcast. (
) He won't get a ps3 right now because it doesn't have games that interests him... he's contradicting himself because he wishes heavenly sword came to 360.
Anyway, he's not really a fps type of guy as well, but guess what? his best game is a fps... Gears. His other games? COD4 (also on the ps3), & mainly sports games and that Lego wars, , Assassins Creed, all of which can be found on the ps3 as well.
360 has some other good games that appeal to other audiences but they are not all that interesting for a wider appeal.
Sorry Xbox, you've been type casted as a fps box. Hopefully as this gen progresses, 1st party Developers will develop system sellers that doesn't fall into the fps genre.PSN ID - DweetRight

Very true. Great post. I think Mircosoft really needs to step up to the plate. They thought they could feed off of the Halo series (did well), but need to open up the doors to other and bigger games.

I Don't Know About This One Guys... (i'm New Here By The Way)... Before Anyone Jumps On What I'm About To Say, Let Me Just Say That I'm A Supporter Of Sony's Ps Platform, But I Wouldn't Go As Far As Call Myself A Fanboy Of Either Consoles. I Own All Three Next-gen Systems: Xbox 360 Pro, Xbox 360 Elite, Ps3 60gb & Ps3 80gb, And Nintendo Wii...
To Me... As Much As I'm Irritated At What These Corporate Executives Are Throwing At One Another (sony, Ms And Nintendo), The Only Thing That Matters To Me Is (and I Think You All Should Ask Yourselves)... Am I Having Fun With The Games I Have For These Platforms? How's The Replay Value For These Games?
So Far, I'd Have To Give My Props To Microsoft... Yeah, Maybe The Sony Exec Is Right About Ms Not Tapping To Gamers Beyond Fps... But I'm Really Having Fun Playing Cod4, Gears And Halo... And I'm Constantly Playing These Games Everytime (almost Everyday)... Now I Do Have Games For The Ps3 As Well, But (other Than 3rd Party Titles) There Isn't A Single Game On The Ps3 That Has A High Replay Value... So Unless Ps3 Comes Out With Something, Then It Would Have Been Justified For Them To Make These Statements... I Just Wished They Had Waited... Just Not Now...

Truly great post and I agree. I can't really find any games I want this year for 360, most that are coming out are multi-plat or are exclusive and are an FPS. And I like FPS... but enoughs, enough.

I;'d have to agree with you. Mass Effect is a shooter as well. I love it, but it's a shooter. Crackdown, and I think Shadowrun is too.
I think it's fairer to say that the 360's exclusive/first/2nd/3rd party games are undeniably, and predominantly shooter based.
I think when you compare the variety of the two companies' 1st/2nd party projects, you'll see a night and day difference of variety of game genres.
Not necessarily a good/bad thing either way. But there is a large gap.

All that says is that MS doesn't have no creativity for games ..... If all your best games are FPS then that should tell u something ..... Its funny because everytime u ask a MS user why the XBOX360 is better they say because we have more games..... LOL... Yeah u guys have more shooters.... I like that that we have games like R&C,Sing Star,Heavenly Sword,God of War,MGS4.... That XBOX360 will never have those are just some of the creative games that SONY has... Thats why i bought a PS3... SONY will have more creative games to come i can't wait to see what they have in store for the future

The same can be said about the ps3.Both markets are flooded with shooters, but both offer other genres as well. The xbox didn't interest me, but the x360 goes beyond the shooter image.

I think sony has something up their sleeves. They mentioned 41 million owners of PS2's will be targeted very soon. If they are thinking what I am thinking its brilliant!
Trade in your PS2 at best buy, game stop or where ever and get $100 off a PS3 that has been reduced to $299, meaning you get a PS3 witgh Blu ray for $199. If that happens its game over for MS and the Wii.When ranking up becomes profitable, let me know so I can give a *edit* too.

well even though I am a huge Sony fan, and dont like FPS's so I would say I fit into the category outside FPS, and guess what, I am going out to buy a 360 for the sole reason of their being interesting RPG's on the console that arnt coming to the PS3.
So that is at least 1 person that Microsoft has got that isnt a FPS fan.
If we go more the main stream general public, I dont know if there is quite enough there yet, and now Sony is starting to pick up steam, I think Microsoft has lost their chance to capture this crowd, as games are close enough now that people will simply wait for the heavy hitters.

I also don't need to put in 100+ hours into a game to feel like I got the most out of it. I've played probably close to 20 hours of Uncharted which is a lot for a single player game where the campaign only lasts 6-7 hours. This is coming from someone who usually only beats a game once too.
I also don't think you can really compare the replayability of online multi-players against solo campaign games. Games like Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank can only have so much replay value because they won't make great online multi-player games. Name a non-FPS, non-RPG 360 single player only game that has as much replay value as those two.

Xbox 360 is a fps console hands down nobody can denie it and not even the xbox fans can BUT BUT BUT you also ahve to give xbox a hand for trying to get other genres on there RPGS for example teh 360 has basically more rpgs than the original xbox had its entire life. But ofocurse 1 generation isnt going to change the tides, looks at japan still and laughs at Microsoft. But they aseem to be going in the right direction in making the console brand a multi genre type console if you know what i mean? I think we will just have to wait for next gen to see if Microsoft can actually deliver other genres from day 1. If Microsoft dont sort it out then they will always loose and wont penetrate japan. loosk at ps2 17m in japan sold was it? nearly same amount as the original xbox did in its entire life. same for 360 look at how many they sold so far only 500,000 lol! and ps3 has a nearly 2 million sold

I was watching a program last night where one of the top execs from Microsoft was in Australia and was being interviewed about their bid for Yahoo.
He said something along the lines of, "Many of Microsoft's products take at least 7 years before they have established themselves and become wildly popular"
Basically he went on to talk about how they approach each of their markets with a long term plan, and aim to be number 2, then they work on being number 1.
I dunno whether they've reached beyond shooter fans yet, but the 360s not being received as purely a hardcore console anymore.

Microsoft's year head start focused a lot on just FPS's did not dedicate time for innovative games... and thats where the PlayStation brand succeeds, by the end of 08 the PS3 will have the upper hand in the console battle.

I don't totally agree with the statement. While I will say that the 360's marquee titles are all FPS style games, they have, in fact reached out beyond the FPS fan...a little.
Without a doubt, Xbox live is an FPS fans wet dream. They really went out of their way to enhance the online gaming experience beyond that of any other console so far. It's best for shooters and competitive games, but it really works well with other games too. The acheivements system and gamerscore totally kill anything the PS3 and Wii have to offer at the moment. If nothing else, the Xbox 360, with the help of Xbox Live, has mastered the art of replay value.
I do think that the Xbox 360 falls short in a lot of ways too. If you are an FPS fan, you can easily say that Bioshock, Gears of War, and Halo 3 are better than Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Folklore, and Heavenly Sword. But then, you can turn around and also ask, "Does the 360 have a platformer better than Uncharted?" Do they have an arcade racer that matches up to Motorstorm? What is their answer to Eye Of Judgment, or Folklore? To a non-hardcore FPS fan, the PS3 does have a more attractive lineup. I think that it's just a matter of time that the PS3 userbase catches and surpasses the 360, but I also think that it is heavily dependent on how HOME turns out and what kind of acheivement system the PS3 gets.
The problem with most action/adventure/platform games is that when they are done, they're done. God of War 2 was great. So was Heavenly Sword, and Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. That being said, once you beat them, there is not much left to do. An acheivement system, or the trophy system coming with HOME, will bring some old games back to life. I mean, plenty of people are still playing Resistance: Fall of Man, but is anyone still playing Ninja Gaiden Sigma? What about Calling all Cars?
While it is true that the 360 hasn't reached out beyond FPS fans, it is actually turning a lot of people into FPS fans instead. Shooters, sports games, and arcade games all have more replay value than other genres, and the acheivements system only makes it better. That being said, the Xbox 360 is VERY lacking in good action/adventure/platform titles. I don't think that it's a problem for them now because the PS3 is STILL a work in progress, but I think the whole "console war" ends in 2008. If HOME proves to be a viable alternative to LIVE and the dualshock 3 controllers become standard, the PS3 could surpass the Xbox 360 and leave it behind. If HOME is a failure, PSN continues to lag behind, and the Xbox 360 is able to pull in a few strong action/adventure titles, then they can pull away for good by the end of the year...and those 41 million US PS2 owners will become Xbox 360 owners.Street Fighter was here before the UFC and PRIDE, so you can give your heart to Fedor...but your a** STILL belongs to RYU!!

Cut the 40gb to $299 and the 80GB to $399 around GTA4's release and your all set Sony. Sony can not afford to under deliver on their games and products or they will be forever in third place. Nobody wants to hear ''2009 is our year'', as people will not even care anymore. Sony needs to get the 40GB down to $299 before MS does around GTA4's launch or those PS2 owners will be become 360 owners.
Resistance 2, KillZone 2, WarDevil, MGS4, God Of War 3, Final Fantasu XIII, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5, and a alot more, how can 2008 not be the PS3's year.
