I think there is an underlying problem when people are saying that a 12x DVD can read data faster then a 2x BDROM, now the facts are TRUE in that the max, throughput for the 12x DVD is higher than a 2x BDrom.. but In my opinion you need to take into account error correction, etc.. When you have a rotating medium the faster the disc spins the bigger chance of read errors, I mean WHO has actually seen a DVD copy at the "MAX throughput" the drive is capable of? Not me... you get close when you have a NEW un touched DVD in the drive, but it seems that error rates and re-reads go up as the disk ages.. Im curious about the longevity of the BDroms,
That is DAMN fast... close to 7MB per second... thats fast...1.7 How fast can you read/write data on a Blu-ray disc?
According to the Blu-ray Disc specification, 1x speed is defined as 36Mbps. However, as BD-ROM movies will require a 54Mbps data transfer rate the minimum speed we're expecting to see is 2x (72Mbps).
NOw lets consider this: Since Blu-ray's site said that a 12x BDrom would be rotating at 10,000 rpm then we can say that a 2x is about 1700rpm, now compare this to the 12x dvd
http://www.hitachi.us/supportingdocs...s/gd7500,0.pdfRotational speed
Approx. 7,070 rpm (DVD-ROM single layer)
Approx. 5,180 rpm (DVD-ROM dual layer)
The BDrom rotates 4x slower than a single layer DVD, and I would guess that even though the 12x drive has a HIGHER transer rate, I think we will see that the two drives will be almost the same when you look at the fact that when a drive has problems reading a disk it will lower the rotational speed of the drive thus lowering its total throughput. I could actually see in certian situation where BDroms at 2x would transer at higher speeds than the 12x dvd drives...
What are your views one this??

I like your insight into this issue. It deffinatly makes sense.
But this should be in the Tech section."It's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace.

Of course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free, 'cause then they're gonna
get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are." ~Easy Rider (1969)

A 12x DVD drive transfers faster than a 1x Blu-ray drive and a little more than a 2x Blu-ray drive.
Hopefully the PS3 has a 3x or faster drive, otherwise load times might be a concern.

That is what the tech specs say on paper but I think what danursuline

loads time wont be a problem at all with the PS3. Blu-ray is great for streaming data off discs. A lot better than dvds drives.
Also another thing is blu-ray drives will be a lot quieter than the dvd drive b/c it doesn't have to spin as fast. Also it will put off less heat b/c it runs slower.

It is also unscratchable and a dust bouncer. It also prevents fingerprints.
Resistance 2, KillZone 2, WarDevil, MGS4, God Of War 3, Final Fantasu XIII, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5, and a alot more, how can 2008 not be the PS3's year.

Hey there:
Nice find, or nice work. Is the difference between BluRay and DVD actually so big?

I am with aleman, i hope loadtimes are not a pain in the buttA 12x DVD drive transfers faster than a 1x Blu-ray drive and a little more than a 2x Blu-ray drive.

OVER.
See ya!

can anyone tell me the image quality difference between hd-dvd and blu-ray?
-

IS there any? Isn't it simply that Blu Ray can store more data so you can have higher/more High Definition content on one disc?
And it's designed to stream data more efficiently?
-
02-11-2006 #12It's true for TOP SPEED ONLY, so it means nothing. What really matters is AVERAGE READ SPEED (the ones we see in real world, like reading files for a console game).

So, even if PS3 comes with a 2x BR drive, it will read more bits per second than X360 12x DVD drive, even thou in theory it has a lower TOP theorectical speed. Real world is the only one one should care about.

One advantage Blu-ray has over Dvd is the Seek time.
I am not bothered by the fact that I am unknown. I am bothered when I do not know others.

danursline, LT1FUN beat you to it by one minute, but he posted it in the wrong section
. Although the two articles are not identical, we've had three threads created today on this topic, all coming from different articles, but it would be pointless to keep each of them open, so I'll go with the first one posted.

[LIVE]Ode to LittleBigPlanet? New trailer for "9"
There has been a trailer recently released for Tim Burton's upcoming film, 9. Now, while we don't normally promote a movie on PlayStation Universe that isn't clearly being released on Blu-ray, our hands were tied with this one. 9 seems to take a page straight out of Media Molecule's book and throws it into its own feature film. Coincidence, much like the similar LBP costumes of contest entrants, could be a legitimate word used in this situation, but Media Molecule must be somewhat flattered by this showing.
By now, you're definitely curious to see what we're talking about, so let us show you. We've included the trailer below for you to enjoy and hopefully you see what we're getting at.
