No love for GTA D:9:56 While we usually avoid repetitive GTA ban mantras like the plague, this is one moral campaign we just can't ignore. The Sex Workers Outreach Project or 'SWOP', an organisation dedicated to improving the lives of sex-industry workers, is asking parents to assist them in calling for a ban of Rockstar's free roaming crim 'em up.
In the course of some routine 'research' on the internet we found the organisation's website, which incidentally offers "prostitution news from around the world," where the organisation lay out their case, quoting a research paper by one David Walsh, PHD. "Children are more likely to imitate a character with whom they identify with," read the paper, "in violent video games the player is often required to take the point of view of the shooter or perpetrator."
Although the organisation are "adamantly opposed to any and all forms of censorship" (being prostitutes and all), as responsible parents they're worried for the welfare of their children. Apparently they "wish to inform other parents of the potential danger extremely violent video games pose to children."
More prostitution in gaming news coming on CVG soon.

02-15-2006 #2Children aren't supposed to be playing violent games because of the rating..."Children are more likely to imitate a character with whom they identify with," read the paper, "in violent video games the player is often required to take the point of view of the shooter or perpetrator."

Despite the fact that Parental Controls is a standard (it's even in Xbox this gen), how many parents will actually read through a couple hundred page manual just to learn how to set it?
It's not the having, it's the using; and not many parents are going to know how to use it.I am a moron. Do not argue with me because I will drag you down to my level and win with experience

So let me get this right. The sex trade workers are asking Parents for support? aren't the parents the ones trying to get the sex trade workers out of there neighborhoods and away from there kids? Also i don't understand why they are against GTA since it makes more people aware of the sex trade and you don't have to kill them after it is up to the player but it is not a required part of the game.

They all ticked off at how you can "rape" & "murder" prostitutes. They're just as clueless as any other organization trying to get to GTA.
Now, I realize "No means No". And I've always respected that, and absolutely never deviated from that belief. I surely don't condone (real world) violence, or contributing to the world's oldest profession. But when you think about it, "raping" a prostitue practically borders on being a victimless crime. I'm sorry, but if they're going to put themselves in a precarious position (no pun intended), I find it rather difficult to empathize with them. What are they actually bitching about? Stealing? Theft of Services?

02-16-2006 #8Exactly. Parents don't need to set any "parental control functions", it's not rocket science, if your 12 year old kid wants you to get them a game that says on the cover it's for mature players ... duh, don't get it.

And prostitutes getting involved are even more hypocritical.
Firstly, think of the poor kid at school, will he/she get more teased because he/she's playing GTA or cause mommy is a prozzy?
Secondly so GTA is a bad influence but the prostitute moms are supposed to be better teachers of "moral values"?
Finally what do there idiots SAY to their kids? Violent games are bad but mommy sleeps with strangers for money and that's ok ...
Many of these whores "service" their "clients" at home, where little Johnny is staying, wondering why mommy has so many different boyfriends and spends so much time "sleeping" noisily. Great example there. Hypocrites
