Well the title says it all, Warning to anyone, WELL VENTILATE YOUR CONSOLE, my brother played gta 4 on the carpet for 4 hours straight everyday for the past 5 days. i take it into my room and start to play for the first few hours and then the screen has this pink distortion, i restart and restart but it comes back so i turn it off for the night, now today and BAM! 1 red light and i get the E 74 error, looked it up and states that it is a overheating (very serious overheating) issue and ive tried numerous things that i usually do so im gonna check if walmart gives one year default warranties or if i have to send it back to everyone.
not blaming the game or anything but adies and gentlemen, take care of your 360 when ur playing stressing games like gta IV

Change the title of this thread. GTAIV did not kill your xbox, your little brother killed your xbox

The manual clearly states not to put it on the carpet. Dont tell MS you did that or it might void your warranty.

I doubt playing the PS3 on a carpet would kill it considering it has survived this:
Environment 3 Heat Sauna – again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.

I get the 1 light thing at least once every other week and my 360 is sitting in the same place all the time. Does it really indicate overheating, because that doesn't even make sense in my case.

its in the manual on things not to do with your 360. The unit suffocated and may not be covered under the warranty if he did this.

I had something wierd go down with my 360 today that even effected my TV, which went into protection mode or so I was told. Luckily TV is fine but had to exchange my 360, 2 yr warranty paid off already but after just 3 months, its not cool...

How did he place the 360 on the carpet? Was it vertical or horizontal? Horizontal shouldn't have stopped the ventilation much I would think...

^^^Come on, who places expensive electrical equipment on the carpet, doing so is not exactly looking after the equipment well.

Well, ofcourse it's not a good idea but depending on the device couldn't you get away with it sometimes?
Because a friend of mine places his PS2 and Xbox on the carpet and he's had them for a while. The PS2, even longer than he had the Xbox. He's not the only one I know that does it.
Oh, it's his.....I see...well you could just tell him to send it in to Microsoft withholding some information.

Your brother didnt make your console RROD. You did. After all you did say that you played after him for a couple of hours. Just because the console was heating up on the carpet doesnt mean he shortened its life. The console is very prone to RROD and it happens whenever unexpectedly. You played it last, you broke it. The motherboard clamp doesnt just seperate itself bit by bit. it just happens.

Hey if you think the carpet is a good place for putting expensive electrical equipment who am i to argue....i cant imagine just how much more dirt is sucked up into them by the fans or static electricity but if that's what rocks your boat go with it....
Oh and here are a few snippet from the 360 Manuel on caring for your console.
Clean and free of dust and debris.
Avoid Smoke and Dust
Do not use the console in smoky or dusty locations. Smoke and dust can damage the console, particularly the DVD drive.R.I.P PS3Forums, you were a becon of light on the sea of fanboys brand name wang rubbing.

Pretty much the ANA scaler chip is the one dying here. I had this too with my last 360 and though it could be fixed, the artifacts would just come back after a few days and the error would popup again. Hope my new falcon unit does better since im on my 3rd 360 already T_T

Carpet blocks airflow, in MS's cases this is a pretty stupid idea, since you have a vertical standing 360, the main vent is at the bottom, 90% of it is vent does not get airflow
in MS's case today, form DOES NOT equal function - frank lloyd wright's twin brother, chuck norrisIf It Ain't Broke, I'll Fix It Till It Is.

The vent being on the bottom wasn't a good idea, specially when the console is meant to be put in the vertical and horizontal position. Anyway, I tried finding articles on why it is dangerous, I found an answer but it was on yahoo and the reason stated had something to do with static electricity....but I guess dust getting into the system also poses a problem.

Let me clear this up, once and for all.
Putting your 360 on the carpet and playing it, WILL KILL THE CONSOLE. The 360 has vents on all sides of the console, they will suck the dust/carpet fibers from the carpet, which will cause the console to overheat and fail/RROD. The manual also states to not put your 360 on the carpet.
You could do the same thing with the ps2 and xbox because they did not need as good a cooling system, the vents were higher up on the system, and the components were more resilient.
Do not put any of the current generation of consoles (PS3, 360 Wii) on the carpet, it will shorten the life of the console or kill it. (The Wii is not as complex as the 360 or ps3 and does not need as good of a cooling system, but I wouldn't take any chances, keep it off the carpet.
