Cool Squad ordering dropped for Gears 2

By now we all know that Gears of War 2 will be "bigger, better and more badass", but what it won't have is the original game's system for issuing orders to squad-mates, according to design director Cliff Bleszinski.
If you're struggling to actually remember a system for issuing orders to squad-mates, that's kind of it, as Bleszinski explains in a video interview with Gamerscoreblog: "In Gears 1 we had kind of an orders system, and in Gears 2 we honestly decided [makes throat-cutting gesture] we gotta axe that," he said. "We really didn't feel like it was leveraged that much in Gears 1."
The emphasis instead is on you and your experience of the campaign, whether in single-player or co-op, Bleszinski said. Interestingly, he concluded his point by saying "you're basically being Marcus and you're being other squad-members throughout the campaign and it's not really kind of a Full Spectrum Warrior RTS type of experience".
The second player in Gears 1 got to play as Dom, but if the "you're being other squad-members" thing means what it sounds like, that could be opened up - and Epic has so far declined to address speculation about co-op for more than two players. Then again, he might not have meant it that way. We'll see.
Elsewhere in the interview, Bleszinski also talked about how he's inspired by other games (like kill.switch, perhaps). "We don't steal, we are inspired by - that is the correct term," he said with a smile. "Whenever the mood hits, whenever something just catches that little part of your head, and you say, 'You know, I like that idea, but we can do that with a new twist and we can do that better'. That's when we use it, that's when we leverage that."
Check out our recent Gears of War 2 preview and interview with Cliff Bleszinski and Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda (also including video) for more on how the game's shaping up ahead of its November release on 360.

I used it, those hardheaded ****ers didn't listen too well.
No thank you. I'll be gaming on a stronger console for $100 cheaper instead

Sony trolled MS. PS4 fans didn't do it. We just laughed at MS and anyone getting mad. $399 FTW!

Wha...? I don't remember there being an ordering system and I must've played through the campaign 10+ times.

Hold Lb and then press A, X, or Y (I think). It sucked as a squad ordering system anyways.

LOL I never used any squad commands. I was too busy baby sitting Dom anyway. That guy was as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

I never knew that was there! If I could have told Dom's dumbass to move away from the troika guns all those times....

So, if it was in the first game, why not just leave it there? Granted, most people didn't know about it, but it can't make Gears of War 2 any worse if it's still there, can it?

I used it many times, I hope the game elements will no longer require it and that is really why it has been removed.

I liked it to be perfectly honest because mentally I felt as if "it was taken care of" even though I had to come in and do most of the work for them (I hope that makes sense).

Well the first game obviously didn't "require it" if 80% of the people that played Gears didn't even know it existed. It's been removed because it was never needed in the first place and was probably only put in there because other 3rd person squad shooters had it.

Well, I used it (and for me that counts), and 80% doesn't count when 8 people or so have replied in this thread to not even knowing it existed.

Having a bad day are we?

    Forgot all about this thread.

Wasn't having a bad day or attacking you (this time ), sorry if it came across that way. I pulled the 80% out of my arse as a way of saying that not very many people knew it was there, myself included, and it seems that most of the people that did know it was there didn't even use it. Fair enough if you liked it, but in no way did the game "require it" as you said originally.
