PS3 Graphical User Interface Fan Creation Contest

Well the months leading up the E3 is a long period and many of us is waiting out each day dearly awaiting for May to roll around so that we can finally get some hardcore concrete information concerning the PlayStation 3. At E3 we expect for Sony to release a tentative price, launch date, and tentative launch titles. One of the major things besides price, launch titles, and launch date speculations has been about what the PS3 GUI will look like. Recently there has been a supposenly leaked PS3 GUI but that was later found to be a fake and since then, PS3 fans with great artistic abilities has tried to capture what they believe the PS3 GUI will look like. Most of you here has even created some threads about what you think the GUI will look like.

PS3 Portal now wants to jump into the fun. We do not know when Sony will show us the PS3 GUI but more than likely it will be at E3 or maybe even after. So from March 2, 2006, til May 8, 2006, (2 days before E3) PS3 Portal will be holding a PS3 GUI contest. What is this contest? Well it is self-explanatory. All you have to do is come up with a mock design of what you believe the PS3 GUI will look like.


Rules:

* You are only allowed one submission. There will be no "I guess I'll make 5 different mock ups and hope that atleast one of them wins."

* The deadline for submissions is May 8, 2006 which is exactly 2 days before E3.

* Anyone can enter, there is no post limit or skill points limit that must be reached. If you're a member of the forum, then you're eligible for the contest.

* When you send your submissions in, make sure that you tell us your SN that you use here in the forums.

* DO NOT post your mock GUI in the forums, they must be covert and only sent to webmaster@ps3portal.com If you post your submission in these forums then you are automatically disqualified.

* There will be 3 winners, all with 1st Prize status. It is highly possible that multiple people could come up with designs that just about resembles the PS3 GUI to the fullest. So to be fair, we will award 3 winners, not just one. If there is 8 mock ups that look 95% like the PS3 GUI, then we'll just review extra hard and find the best 3 of the 8.

* Try to be creative and Good Luck!

PS3 Portal hasn't decided what the 3 winners will get in result of winning, however we plan on announcing what the prizes will be shortly before E3. Maybe a free launch title of your choice? Who knows, but PS3 Portal will decide soon enough. So what if the PS3 GUI is revealed before May 8th? While that is highly doubtful, what we would do if this would occur is to just take the submissions that we already have up to that point and the contest would end. That is the only fair solution. If the PS3 GUI isn't revealed at E3 but after then the May 8th deadline will stay and the contest would draw to conclusion as planned. We would then just wait it out until we do get the PS3 GUI and from there PS3 Portal will review the submissions and pick out the 3 best ones.

As I have stated, do not post your mock GUI anywhere in these forums or else you'll fall to a DQ. For your own good, it would be best to not show off your design to anyone. It would suck if you flaunted it off and some other person took ideas from your design and placed them into his/hers and then later find out that his/hers was one of the 3 winners but not you. You are however free to discuss this contest with your peers in this thread at anytime. If you have any questions, comments or concerns then you may feel free to do so in this thread and in this thread only.

Well I didn't know which forum to post it in. I presented this idea to the staff and I was told to post it in the forums, I didn't know which forum to put it in so I decided to post it in this one assuming that more people visit this one that the design one.

Hopefully more people will join in because we atleast need 4 entrys for it to be official.

Whoa, MajesticEdge, I made a mock GUI about a month ago for these forums, and yes it has been posted here. So did Delusion. Does this DQ our designs? Will I have to redo one? We both spent hours on them!

And for the sake of not double-posting, the rules are far to vague. What do you want to PS3 to be doing? Listening to music? Selecting games on its HDD? Browsing movies? Browsing the Internet? What? Chances are Sony won't show the PS3 doing everything at E3. So someone who makes a GUI browsing Ye Grande Internet, and Sony doesn't show it, will get screwed over. Do you want a basic home page, like the PS3 is idle?

Other than that, this is a pretty good contest. I'm looking forward to dusting off my old design and throwing in some realism.

So the contest is based on how accurate your GUI will be to the real thing, as opposed to how creative and well it is designed. Then you're just making it random. Its like rock-papers-scissors. What part of the GUI are you referring to? The ps2 gui was just a black background with various particle effects. Why not base it more on skill or artistic ability, rather than luck (and maybe you can give an additional prize to whoever ends up being the most accurate).

In your case you can use that design since you posted it before this contest. However it would be risky because you don't want someone to steal your concept, that is the reason why I made that rule. But if you want you can use that one or create one from ground up, remember, you have time since it doesn't end til the 8th of May and it is only the 22nd of March now.

Well see thats what makes it interesting because none of us knows what it will look like, so in essence it is a guessing game in many ways. Later on down the road PS3Portal could host a contest that is based off of artistic ability. Example, say before MGS4 comes out (Like 2 months or so), we can host a contest to where people would have to create a wallpaper using the MGS4 theme and the best looking one(s) wins. That wouldn't be random but more on artisitic ablities. However this is different. I mean it isn't like you have anything to lose, I can understand if you had to pay a $50 fee to get in lol. Just remember, you have til the 8th of May to finish it. So it isn't like you have to rush up something in 3 days, unless you wait til the last minuete.

BMT-216A thus far is the only person who has sent in a mock PS3 GUI. The contest deadline is on Monday and he is the only person to send something in. We need atleast 4 entries for it to be an official contest as there will be 3 winners however we only have one entry at the time.
