good news for blu-ray, hd-dvd delayed

Toshiba Delays US Release of HD-DVD
Summary: Toshiba announces a one-month delay for HD-DVD roll-out, citing extra time needed to garner movie studio support.
Full: Toshiba announced today that they've delayed the US debut of their HD-DVD players by one month in an effort to garner additional support from movie studios

The company's HD-DVD players were originally slated to ship this month, but have now been delayed until April. Toshiba failed to supply a specific date as to their release. The new HD-DVD format allows movie studios to pack higher quality video on the discs, as well as more extra features. Sony has countered Toshiba with a new DVD format of their own -- Blu-Ray, which is slated to release this summer. The software and hardware giant has already tapped the new media format for their upcoming PlayStation 3 console.

Currently Microsoft has announced tentative plans to integrate HD-DVD technology in to their Xbox 360 console, although currently it appears that such a marriage will be strictly for feature films, not for video game titles.

you know i don't even see why M$ continues to support HD-DVD i thought that they were going to use it for games but now they want to use it for movies there is no point.

I don't know how well HD-DVD will do since it will just be out in the stores but with Blu-Ray they have a huge support for advertising the new format.

I'm a little worried about the "war"...

To the average consumer who has no idea about technological advances HD-DVD probably sounds more appealing... And by that I mean only sounds better because they are buying HD TVs so a HD-DVD is the obvious upgrade.... Blu Ray? Whats Blu Ray they will ask.... It may be all in the name but I think this may affect the sales war.... I hope not because everybody on this forum knows BR is the better platform but then again so was Beta

I've talked to hundreds, perhaps thousands of tech people through the years and noone is even thinking about HD-DVD. HD-DVD could have been released a year ago and it still wouldn't be a cause for concern for Sony or Blu-Ray. Like Microsoft says, these two formats are not going to catch on for years and years. Except in Blu-Rays case in 2 years it will have an install base of more then 20 million people thanks to the Playstation 3. On the other hand, I highly doubt HD-DVD players will have even reached the 1 million mark in 2 years.

Noones talking about it, and noone really cares about it. It's just an inferior product with an inferior future sales pace and an overall inferior future.

They can't make games of it because it would split the gamer base, you could only get an HD-DVD game if you had an HD-DVD xbox; it would be horrible for marketing; pretty much making it pointless.

and by the way udontneedtoknow, your post of the mont icon is knd of hidden; you have to click more to see it. you should change that

    What is HD-DVD?
All the peeps i asked have no idea, but they know what Blu-Ray is. As a matter of fact, my buddy did a survey (over 1,300 people) about what would people buy, HD-DVD or Blu Ray? and how much are they willing to spend?

More than 80% of the people said they would buy blu ray and they are willing to spend up to 800 bucks.

(The survey was some college class, i'll ask him what class tomorrow.)

Wasn't Toshiba working with IBM and Sony to create the Cell chip?

After reading that article about big movie studios backing the PS3 for its Blu-ray technology, wouldn't it make sense for Toshiba to purposely delay their HD DVD technology to support the Blu ray in the PS3?

I know it sounds absurd since a comany ditching a whole format for its rival is unheard of. But if Sony can really get 20 million units out the door in 2 years, it just makes sense to create a Blu ray anomaly and give in to the fight.

if you can't beat em, join em!

The PS3 won't be the only gadget to use the CELL. And the Playstation will sell despite of the late launch and release of HD-DVD. So no, it wouldn't make sense for Toshiba to purposely delay their product.

And Blu-ray will be in homes worldwide as well so even Europe will be quickly adopting Blu-ray without HDTV's.

Blu-Ray is coming out in May, and Best Buy is already hyping it up. Blu-Ray has way more support so its gonna win.

[LIVE] Activison working with Bizarre Creations on Blur

Activision announced today that it's working with Bizarre Creations on a new game that it promises will revolutionise the racing genre, which is called Blur.

In development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC, players are dropped into a heart pumping, electrified racing action with 20 cars on the track as they try to collect power-ups, weapons and use them to blast other cars out of the way.

“We did our homework and saw a huge opportunity to move beyond traditional racers and create a game completely focused on making racing ‘fun’ again,” said Martyn Chudley, creative director, Bizarre Creations. “Blur delivers a new style of racing experience for all gamers, regardless of their experience, skill or genre preferences. Everything the player does, both in their cars and with their cars, is a dramatic adrenaline rush; it’s a real blast!”

“We know that racing can be fun for everyone, and we are excited to enter this genre with a game that keeps players in the pack and combines fun with intense racing battles,” said Maria Stipp, EVP and GM of Owned Properties, Activision Publishing. “Bizarre Creations is one of the most creative studios in the industry with a rich heritage of top-rated racing games and we are excited to partner with them on Blur, which is set to break the mold of traditional racing games.”

Expect more on Blur when we have it.

Re: [ready]Activison working with Bizarre Creations on Blur

Jamie, this is too close to a press release. We already know that Activision is working with Bizarre on Blur. I'd re-structure the article, and call it something like "Activision hypes/talks Blur," or something along those lines.
I think PS3 should have a built in memory card!!!

[WIP] Blur to "make racing ‘fun’ again"

Activision officially announced today that it's working with Bizarre Creations on a new game that it promises will revolutionize the racing genre, Blur.
