All the back and forth about whether the E3 videos are real, whether the PS3 will be better than the 360, etc - do people who don't read game sites, etc even know all about this? Is this year of anticipation for us non-existent to then, and is the only time they'll know about the console near November when ads start coming out? Will they be impressed by potentially subpar graphics, or has the hype gotten to them via we gamers?
What do you think?

Some know. Most don't. But I think even though they are casual gamers, as a console buyer they would want to do some research before picking a product.
Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge at you because you are a vegetarian.

I think that is the same thing that happened to the Xbox 360 because the graphics looks great and it came out first.

Well, going into a store and blindly picking up the most advertised product has never been a good choice. It's just that some people get lucky. I barely know anyone who does that.

Yeah but people are lazy and beleive that the sales people know something about the product that is being sold at the store. Also look up dry beer to show you how marketing makes a product.

before i joined these forums, i didn't really know about it. such long term hype was non-existent to me, and i'd consider myself more than a casual gamer. i'd usually just get hyped up when i started seeing empty boxes in stores and such.
before i joined this site, if somebody would have told me about a forum where people talk and often argue about videogames, i would have though you guys were all crazy. but now, i'm just one of the gang

I don't think they necessarily know. This ties into a thread that was posted a while back. Do casual gamers know what trade events like E3 are? I sided with the position that they didn't know, simply because the sell through rate of magazines like EGM, Game Informer, Official U.S. Playstation Magazine, PSM (all U.S. mags mind you), didn't fully represent at the least the Playstation 2 installed base in the U.S. If you added up the sell through rate of all those magazines it would probably come close to 15 million at best. That's much less than the Playstation 2 installed base, and not even taking into account what the GC and Xbox have in terms of units sold.
Of course, they could always check out the Internet, but I have a sneaking suspicion that many don't go to game sites like Gamespot or IGN, they only purchase games based off what their friends buy or what they think is cool at the moment from seeing a commercial or two.
My brother is a perfect example of a casual gamer. He used to be rpg heavy like me (sigh), but now he only buys EA sports games, and stuff like True Crime. He doesn't even read magazines or go on websites

Currently playing? Skyrim (360). White Knight Chronicles (PS3). Majoras Mask (Wii). Final Fanasy VII (PS2). Just completed? Final Fantasy VI.

Well, then they just pick the wrong sources for their research. There's still some stigma that the typical salesperson is knowledgeable.

Not really I know guy who brought a $5000(CND) HDTV because the salesperosn (Best Buy store) said that was the only TV that had HD in the store. When there was couple other TVs that had HD and were cheaper. Again look up dry beer and OS/2 Warp.

Which point that people believe that the salesperson knows something or to do research before making a major purchase? Which I agree people should do though.

nope, casual gamer hasent seen anything , hasent heard anything they dont give a damn, if he had ps2 he normaly will buy a ps3 , now he doesnt know anything when ps3 will release nor he cares too much, so he'll end up buying ps3 again, he will buy ps3 when he casualy sees it in the store or sees some comercial, but if he plans on buying one which all do befor buying anything, then he is not a casual gamer ( he likes it). Hardcore gamers instead stay all day on ps3 forums, thinking about games all day and stay up till 3 a clock in the morning just to see some blury pics from their favorite games in the latest game show.

Both. If the guy didn't care about research, he'd have never asked the sales person, and if he didn't think the sales person was knowledgeable, he'd have never believed him.

He never asked the salesperson the guy just said "oh you should get this TV because it has HD", which he than did. Yeah people should do research on what they are buying.

Nope. But they do know that the PS3 will be powerful if not the most powerful console coming out this year.
Resistance 2, KillZone 2, WarDevil, MGS4, God Of War 3, Final Fantasu XIII, White Knight Chronicles, Gran Turismo 5, and a alot more, how can 2008 not be the PS3's year.

I know people who just like sony. But, they don't know anything else about the system, besides it is made by sony.

I have a lot of friends that are casual gamers, and to tell you the truth, they dont care about the 360, and they dont even know when the ps3 will be launch, they only know that it will be later this year. They are more than happy with their ps2
, so i guess that console launches are directed to us hardcore fans, the console does not get appeal to the mainstream maybe until 2 years after launch.

There are two types of gaming people. The type that are fanboys/fangirls, who are mainly inclined to buy one console or the other, who read sites and follow every bit of news with ferver; and there is the casual gamer who could care less about consoles, as long as they get games to play, these casual gamers usually have more money to spend on gaming hardware and software so they can afford to careless while the fanboys/girls will do every bit of research to rationalize that their choice is the best even though sometimes the evidence point against their favored console.
So, to sum it all up, casual gamers don't care what console they get, as long as they can play games on it and it looks cool."and I mean If he doesn't like you after he sees this, then you're just gonna have to go back home and put some more make up on."

03-29-2006 #23You got a good point there.

So either you're a rich idiot gamer who just waltzs into a store and grabs the nearest console or you're a stupid gamer who researches blindly for the sole purpose of arguing? Nice logic. There's got to be more than two extremes.

Bwhahahah! Fanboys do research to rationalize their choice? No Fanboys are just the ones who love something so much they try to convert people to it like its a religion.
Look at me? I'll brand the words SONY FANBOY on my forehead, because I am. But I buy every little thing. Just because you're a fanboy it doesn't mean you don't have money. It means you're a die hard, loyal fan.
