    Sony stealth cofirm backwards compatability?

One of the announcement at the GC08 was that with a FIRMWARE update singstar ps3 players would be able to RIP their ps2 Singstar games for use on the PS3.

What makes it strange is why would Sony devote an entire FW upgrade just for one game? My theory is with the announcement of the new BC-less 80gig and the new 160gig Sony is future proofing its customers who are still interested in playing their older library.

It is expensive adding the PS2 emotion chip to the PS3 to make it backwards compatible, I guess emulation through a firmware upgrade is cheaper and possible.

    What do you guys think?

I ealy doubt they are gonna have full emulation support! Maybe the firmware contains only emultion for just this one game.

But why waste a firmware for just one game? Did it really sell that well to give reason for this?

It's huge in europe, I could easily see them devoting a FW update for Singstar.

You could just as well ask why they don't announce that they can provide BC and be done with it. The 80gb mgs4 bundle is already sold out so it's not like they have any reason to be secretive. It's just a firmware update. Not like they have to move any mountains or anything to update a firmware.

It's not a firmware update, that's jusr PS3Fanboy not knowing the difference.

Singstar game is getting a SOFTWARE update, that allows you to insert a PS2 Singstar DVD, and it will read play the songs on it.

It's not actually executing any PS2 code, and it's not a firmware update.

Yeah, what he said. Here's how they are actually doing it.

While playing a SingStar PS3 disc, at the song select screen, hit the [select] button to swap discs and play the songs from the inserted disc. The songs are not saved to the hard drive.
This is a unique feature for SingStar and makes it possible for fans who have already built up their PS2 SingStar collection to continue enjoying it on PS3. It will be delivered via a free game update later this year and will work with all current SingStar PS3 discs. It will also be included on future SingStar PS3 discs releasing next year.
This new feature will work with all current PS3 system models and does not require a system software update.
Basically, this is not an emulator, the Singstar software itself can read certain parts of the PS2 disc, but doesn't actually play from the disc itself.

Not really. The Internet is full of mis-information, and the majority of it comes from clueless bloggers like those that blog for Joystiq/PS3Fanboy/Kotaku/.IGN.

Anyway. Sony is working on software BC constantly. Don't expect 100% ever though because software emulation is never perfect. It can only get you so far.

then you are being a little harsh...the sites that you listed up there...two are the same site, just different names and what ever is PS related that is posted on one will be posted on the other same with the 360fanboy site and the wii fanboy site and the ds fanboy site and the psp fanboy site, i think you get the picture.

Kotaku is a known PS basher, and they always bash the PS3, but some how they always find valid information about the 360 (and if you don't beleive me, look at the rumor they started with the 360 being sold out in Japan. If this is true next week 360 sales for japan will be 0 or close to it.)

IGN is neutral in my opinion, they post good and bad news about each system.

Most of the information people get comes from forums like this site, but what matters is how the are is managed. On this forum, you either come with facts and truth or don't say nothing at all. We don't like FUD on this board.

In all honest to this person post, they made a valid inquiry. It was a good question, but his information was a little twisted. And its no fault upon him. The information that was first posted about this was wrong.

So to my point, you were a little harsh.

RIP is a very big thing for Sony because RIP = Hack

    Kotaku updated the post

UPDATE - Sony have clarified that the firmware update will actually allow you to "hot swap" your PS2 discs into your PS3 while playing the PS3 version of Singstar, giving you access to that disc's content in the PS3 version. So no ripping, but it's the next best thing. And before you ask, yes, this will work even in PS3's that aren't backwards compatible.

It's not a BC firmware update it's simply an update to allow it to read and play/stream(?) the PS2 Singstar disks.

I didn't even think about BC when I heard this announcement, but it's not BC anyhow, so it doesn't matter... It's not reading game data, it's reading music data and singing data... Bit different...

If only Rockband and Guitar Hero would do this. Hahahahahahahaha, that's funny, EA or Activision throwing the PS3 users a bone... HAHAHAHA!

i remember the ps1 days if you wanted to play a pirated game you had to swap it after the boot up sound. on the black screen thats were you swap it, and you do it again then one more time to the one you wanted to play...its either that or you modded it so it played it without swapping disc

Maybe we could stop making up threads with 'theories' and actually look in the forums where this was answered already. It has NOTHING to do with PS2 BC.

I'm excited about SingStar doing this, but it does not add BC to the PS3 SKUs without it. It will have the same interface and stuff, but will swap the music out with PS2 stuff, which is cool.

While not exatly the same (PS2 to PS3) With Rockband 2 it's said all downloaded Rockband 1 songs will be compatible and owners of the first game can transfer the Songs fromt he first disk to their HDDs to be played with the newer RB2. While not exactly the same as reading songs from the PS2 version on the PS3, Its great function and it's far better then the what? The 20 different Guitar Hero games out or coming out this year where you have to constantly switch disks to play the older songs. i just hope there is some sort of compression similar to how warhawk does it because there are gonna be ALOT of songs on my PS3 taking up space.....

Get to the bottom of the matter.
Basically SS PS3 uses very similar file to store songs to SS PS2.
So with simple update SS PS3 can pcik up songs from SS PS2 disk and play it.
Similar to "the beat" on PSN which can change any mp3 into a music game.
However there was a rumor that PS3 is goign to have PS2 classic on PSN.

I know that it's already been established that it's simply allowing the PS3 to read the music, not play the PS2 game. But I wanted to say this:

It is easier for Sony to implement game-specific software BC than full-blown BC. It will be this way that PS2 games might see the light of day in the PS Store. Sony will simply make sure the games they put up in the store have software BC.

Hardware / software for backwards compat wasn't all that expensive. ... but we're selling PS2 software to PS2 customers, and selling PS3 software to PS3 consumers." Still, Jack seems to feel like it may have been the wrong move. "I would like to have had it in there, but Sony's collective strategy determined we could afford to lose it. But i do agree with him tho. I mean look at NES then SHES then N64. Nonoe of them are backwards compatibility

Tho to the point is i guess its worth getting BC for those youngester who never get to realy put PS2 games in the pass.

I remeber in the pass people complain how PS3 use too much energy & now want BC to play PS2 games
Didnt they try to compare it with a refrigerator hahah that was a horrible joke.

Might as well get a second hand PS2. People here in my country are selling their old PS2 with 100+ games, 2-4 controllers with a personal warranty of a few days at like $150 USD
