Trophies mandatory "soon"?

Some guy at the Official Playstation blog commented that "the day will come when you get trophies in almost every game then you will complain about something else" and John Diamonon of Capcom left a teasing note as a reply, stating that "...and that day is coming soon." Obviously, this suggests that PS3 trophy support will be mandatory for all games in the future.

They're already in a lot of games, so they're almost to the point of being mandatory.

Glad they are doing this.. but I hope trophy and home support will be the only mandatory things.. I don't want ps3 development to become as structured as deving on other systems. I think Sony's got something good with the freedom they offer and shouldn't sacrifice it just to be like the other guys

I think they said after the holidays they will be mandatory. It was 6 months after the API were released, which makes it Januarish I think.

theres so many games coming with trophies, already, somtimes with trophies thor i feel like im going for the trophies and not actually playing the game :/, ahh well there good anyhow

Hopefully they'll be mandatory. I'm less attracted to games without trophies these days.

That would be cool if they make it mandatory. Because I believe that the trophy system make games more replay-valuable.

Every game in 2009 should have trophies. If it doesn't, the developers are just lazy because they have enough time to but it in.

That's good. Trophies are cool, but I won't choose a game just because it has trophy support. But it is good to know they are becoming mandatory.

Yeah I thought I remembered reading that early next year all games would be required to have trophies. It wasn't required right away because so many games were in different parts of the development process and were coming out.

The only game I want to get retro trophies for is PJ:Monsters (and Burnout but that should be here on Thursday!). I see all games in the new year having trophies.

About time. They can't possibly compete against Xbox Live successfully if they don't take this step to create a unified service across all future games. Good move I say.

Not many upcoming games won;t have Trophy support anyway. Wouldn't surprise me if it was made mandatory - but even now I think devs are seeing the benefit of adding Trophies in to their games. It gets people buying the game and gets existing owners playing it again.. everybody wins.

If Sony says all games have to have them the software maker can say forget it, we will just release on a different platform. Now Sony can make it madatory for their own games but they cannot control the 3rd party vendors.

This! I found myself buying the triple booster for warhawk the other day, for what appeared to be no reason but it turns out my 20% trophy count in the game was just far too low for me. great game but the only time i seem to put it on these days is to aim for the next trophy.

and what platforms are they?
xbox360 oh wait achievements
PC a dying platform
wii last gen graphics, new gen controls, that only really work well in some games

Achievements are mandatory on the xbox yet 3rd parties still develop games for them, trophies are just another version of achievements and will only need tweaking in upcoming games to make them suitable for trophies!

That's just as much of a loss for them as it is Sony though.. I can't imagine any self-respecting dev shunning the platform for an extra few days' work to add Trophies. Even third party devs.
