Serious epilepsy warning for WipEout HD

Serious epilepsy warning for WipEout HD

Consult the doc before playing games "if you have an epileptic condition" reads health warning on start-up

After we revealed the reason behind the WipEout HD delay was that it failed "the epilepsy tests so much that it has to be re-engineered" and Sony's eventual response that it takes "consumer safety very seriously", the game is finally upon us.

We've played the review code to death that Sony passed along a while ago but we've now got WipEout HD installed on our PS3s at home via PSN.

One thing we noticed though was a very serious health warning that you confirm you've read by pressing 'X' on the pad:

"Always play in a well lit environment. Take regular breaks, 15 minutes every hour. Discontinue playing if you experience dizziness, nausea, fatigue or have a headache.

"Some individuals are sensitive to flashing or flickering lights or geometric shapes and patterns, may have an undetected epileptic condition man may experience epileptic seizures when watching television or playing videogames.

"Consult your doctor before playing videogames if you have an epileptic condition and immediately should you experience any of the following symptoms whilst playing; altered vision, muscle twitching, other involuntary movement, loss of awareness, confusion and / or convulsions."

Now that's a serious warning not to even think about playing WipEout HD if you feel in any way ill as you're propelled around a rollacoaster track in a hovering craft at speeds the RAC haven't thought of yet.

We all know most (if not all) games carry health warnings and advice on taking regular breaks but we've never come across one as serious and doctor-like as this one.

It makes us more wary to say the least, what about you? Anyway, we're off to play some more. Wish us luck!
    Source
That's quite a serious warning, doesn't surprise me considering the speed of the game and the different light.

    Once more into the fray.
Into the last good fight I'll ever know.
Live and die on this day.
Live and die on this day.

Dont all games come with this warning? Most games only put it in the Manual though so since WHD doesn't have one they have to put it in the game.

Yeah but does anyone pay attention to these warnings?

I think many games can trigger epilepsy and even traffic lights in some very severe cases and it's good to see Sony taking responsibility for their consumers wellbeing.

I am still undecided about getting this or not. Anyone got it and can let me have their thoughts?

That has to be it, its IN the game since there is no manual..... games have always had that warning, or is this a particularly big warning specifically for this game.

+Games have always had it. I just think Sony are going to make you read this before play.

Well if you have epilepsy, you shouldn't play video games anyway.. Not if it's serious.

Saying that, both my parents have epilepsy....

    lol

They're just doing it to cover themselves. Like said above Metal Gear had similar warnings when installing. If the game had a high percentage of causing epilectic fits then it wouldn't be released.

I was just going to mention all the Health Warnings they had in MGS4 whilst you installed the next chapter, which I found kinda ironic since Snake is chain smoking all the way through.

How do they test it, do they get epileptic people to play until they have a fit?

    SEIZURE TROPHY! PLATINUM!

+rep - that is LOL worthy.

On a more serious note - most games have this warning.

To paraphrase Dora the explorer. "Can you say, marketing?"

I have not seen much of Diego, my daughter seems to have outgrown Dora the explorer now.

"Swiper no swiping! Swiper no Swiping!"

There was a thread that linked to a load of metal gear funny clips and one of them was a "Dora" based clip. Hilarious!

"Terrorists have a nuclear weapon and are planning to launch it with Metal Gear... can you say metal gear???" *red dot appears on chest* "Sniper wolf no sniping!"

    Class!

    Ok stopping now.

I know that sudden change or flash of light in games could trigger epilepsy. Be careful people.
