Some games support 1080i but when you load up a game, usually it will automatically change the res to 720p. Burnout paradise has recently allowed users to play in 1080i as some old sets dont support 720p.

So what have you found out so far? My friend has the same issue too. His tv doesn't support 720p only 1080i. So for the most part he can only play games in 480p which sucks for him cause he has a 50" tv.
From what he has told me is that if the game comes 720 it will put it into 480 not 1080 unlike his xbox what upscales it to 1080<a href="http://us.playstation.com/playstatio...aKilla26"><img src="http://fp.profiles.us.playstation.co...staKilla26.png" width="230" height="155" border="0" /></a><br/><a href="http://www.us.playstation.com/psn/signup">Get your Portable ID!</a>

Wait, what TV do you have? Can your TV use 720p and 1080i, but what resolution is it natively... 1080i?
Need to know which TV You have.

I have a Hiscene "19" TV and it is always on 720p for all of my games
But GTA 4 can support 1080p but my TV just plays it at 720p
Oh and when i am in my XMB, it on 1080p but that's it

Well... its just upscaling dude. It doesn't add detail to play it in 1080p.
If your TV accepts 1080p then just set the PS3 to 1080p, it will play 720p games at 720p.

Ok, but why do you want to upscale it?

Thats now how it works. Resolution isn't graphics first of all.
Secondly, upscaling does not add better resolution or graphics. So... what you are asking is pointless. Also you should know that the more processing you do to a signal, the worse it looks. So.... if you force your PS3 to go into 1080p on GTA4 or any other game, and then your TV uses the signal to display it, its going to look worse, not better.
And your TV is not 1080p right? A TV can only be 1 resolution, yours I assume is 720p or 1080i, not 1080p. So ... when the TV gets this 1080p signal it has to do even more processing.... which is bad.
I'd just leave it if I were you.. if you want the game to look its best, play it in its original resolution... 720p.

Its all good, you just need to understand that forcing the PS3 to upscale doesn't mean that the graphics get better, mostly they usually get worse, or stay around the same, but never really better, only very rarely. And NOT becuase they add detail or make the graphics better, the upscaling just might be better than your TVs.
BUT... just leave it.... let the PS3 send what it wants.

quick question. i have a new ps3 and my 42 inch samsung hdtv. now, i can get it to 420p, 720p, or 1080i settings but each time i go higher, the screen gets smaller. i guess this is normal as higher resolutions are smaller, but when i am playing a game, i can hardly read the menu items at even 720p. it would be best resolution if i could play all games and movies at 720p, but i can hardly read the stuff because its so small even on a 42 inch hdtv. i am about 14 feet away from it as well. thank you!

Which TV do you have? Are you using HDMI? And what do you set the PS3 to? If its a 720p HDTV that accepts 1080i, then set the PS3 to output everything up until 1080i. If its 1080p, then set it to output everything.
Although I have to say 14 feet from a 42" is way way too far away to really see 720p resolutions. This is your issue I believe. You should be sitting 8.5 - 10ft away.
14' is so far that your eyes cannot actually deal with all the resolution so close together and it makes it really hard to tell. At that distance you'd be better off with a regular TV almost.

i see what you mean Reflex, i forced the ps3 to upscale to see how bad it would look and whoa, it looked terrible
the colour was so differenet and the TV was like split into two, but i put it back to my normal setting and it's fine now
I can see what you mean by the TV looking bad Reflex

While I mean it doesn't always make it look bad, but it doesn't make it look better. Upscaling just does not add resolution or anything.

there are a few games that support 1080i, like Skate I believe does, and most of the newer games. Also Fergus, 1080p is much better than 1080i as it is progressive scan and that makes the line of picture move much faster, and doing so makes the picture look even smoother when it is in motion. if you have 1080i, it will just move the lines slower, and look more edgy and not as smooth. anyways, most people are better off with 720p res when you have a tv that supports 1080i. i have heard many places that p scan is much better, and 720p, most ps3 games are made for at this point in time. you will have a much better picture. i guess i am sitting too far away at 14 feet on my 42 inch tv. i will either sit closer i guess. thanks guys!

There is no real way with consumer products to just test 1080i vs 1080p, because its either a 720p game or a 1080p video or game being de interlaced and then sent as 1080i, or upscaled or downscaled and then processed even further.
For example, if you have a 1080p HDTV, and send it a 1080i signal, then its turning into 1080p, its not 1080i anymore. Its actually changing the signal. So..... almost NO TVs actually use 1080i at all to DISPLAY the images.

A slight wording problem. It's an impossibility for any console game to do native 1080i. It just can't do it, well within realistic programing abilities. The timing is a complete mess because you are displaying half the image.
PS3 can internally only display progressive. It only goes 1080i, because it's practically free to convert it to 1080i, then send it to the TV(you just drop half of it).
The only reason they do that is an old issue with non-720p TV. It's a performance drop option. Like "compatibility mode" for computers. It's not as good fps, etc, but only for a few people.
Any modern TV of at least 5yrs or so old would have 720p, so 1080i, is purely for movies/TV shows. Not games.

Actually old games like FC or SFC I think even some PS game do process in interlace.
The native picture looks squashed due to interlace lines.
If you ever play those very old games on a early beta emulator you will know this.
The interlace line are patched afterwards.
Anyway PS3 does it's 1080i in style men.
The PS3 formware team spend over 2 months on ding a interlace and deinterlace on PS3 firmware.
It's mainly for use with DVDs but it's also ative with games disply in none native resolusion.
PS3 don't do it's interlacing by just patching black lines, it does more.
