    Deleting game data= lost trophies?

SO for games that took up 5 gigs like bioshock, can I erase that game data, not save data, and still retain my trophies? I dont want to have 5 gigs wasted if I am not going to pick the game up again but don't want to lose my trophies either.

You won't lose your trophies no matter what data you delete. Trophies are not saved on the console, so they will always be tied to your psn id. If you reformat, restore or even get a new ps3, you can always get your trophies back by performing the sync operation.

Did not know that. That is actually pretty good to know. I was wondering the same thing a few weeks back.

Actually, be very careful, I'm fairly sure if you havent sync'd your trophies up (done so by simply checking your trophies through thr XMB) that deleting save data/game data it will delete those trophies permanently. Havent tested out the theory, but I'm pretty sure thats how it works. So ALWAYS check your trophies after obtaining them so that they sync up with sony's servers.

Exactly. I was about to mention this myself. If you delete the save data, even if you were online when you received the trophy, when it syncs up the PSN will say you have the trophy, but your console will say you don't and thus loose that trophy along with any others that weren't synced up.

Just make a habit out of checking your trophy list each time you finish a game and before turning off your system, especially if you know for a fact you unlocked some trophies.

Keep in mind though, the sync only happens when a game is not running.

    Hi, I have a question...
I have not an internet connection and so I cannot do sync operation.
If I save my gaming save in an external USB key, and then I format my playstation, losing my trophies, then if I return my save game in the PS3 .. will my trophies return? or will have I lose them forever ?
Sorry for my bad english, I hope you have understood what I mean....

As long as it is the same system. The saves with trophies attached to them are "signed" with the system's ID. Just be cautious as I don't know if they are also attached to your specific hard drive. So if you do a hard drive upgrade and do not restore from a full backup via the setting menu, some saves may refuse to let you have your trophies back.

Thx a lot for your answer
    I will be cautious.
In this other case, if I wish only to save a gamesave with trophies in my USB key (i.e. for avoiding to lose the car in Midnight Club in the match in which I bet my car), then I can run the race, and if I lose I can overwrite the MC savegame with my other save (that I have saved in the external USB key) and I always will have my trophies.. right ?

Yes. You are simply reverting back to one of "your" older saves. The key here is it is YOUR save. Saves are attached to your system and PSN account and in rare cases also your hard drive. As long as none of those three things change your OK. Now for the rare ones that also attach to the hard drive, aka copy protected, the only way to backup and restore these is through the FULL backup and RESTORE in the settings menu, but this is reserved for hard drive upgrades and not your day to day backup.

Trophies stay there but dont appear in your profile until you sync them so deleting game data will do nothing to your trophies.

That's not correct. I was half way through a Crushing run on Uncharted when I got a new PS3. Saved the save file to USB stick and then transferred to new PS3 but when completed game no trophy. Had to start a new game on the new PS3 to get the trophy. Game save files aren't really linked to anything in most cases so trophies won't be awarded if you just stick in a game save file and start playing as it would be too easy to cheat that way.

The only way you can lose trophies if its a major server screw up (on Sony's part) as long as your trophies are synced with the server then you shouldn't lose them.

That's because the Trophy info is stored on the PSN itself.

Actually no I'm still correct. In your situation you broken one of the three things required by most trophy saves NOT to change: YOUR SYSTEM. Since you had a new system, you also had a new serial number. It doesn't matter that you used the same PSN account, or hell even if you used the same hard drive.

So to keep games with trophy saves working and not have to start over you must keep these in mind:
    • SYSTEM - All trophy saves are linked to your system. So if your system changes that save will no longer be able to earn trophies. XBOX 360 Game Save sharing == Easy Achievements anyone?
    • PSN ACCOUNT - Some games go one step further and also link the save to your PSN Account. This is so you can't have a friend log in on your system, copy your save to there account and earn a trophy on your dime.
    • HARD DRIVE - Lastly some games also have the counter measure of copy protection in their saves; eg. Eye of Judgment. The only way to copy this is via the backup utility built into the PS3, but even this is setup in such a way that the backup can only be restored to the same system. So you will only run into this when performing a hard drive upgrade.

You can delete all your data as long as you did sync the data before.

I had trophies for Uncharted, PS3 died. Was able to back up my data (Save files) but when I restored them my trophies are gone. (Yes I have synced, but they still aren't there.)
So if I am to understand this correctly, this is because I did not sync before I sent the system to Sony? When you log into the PSN Store or check your messages your trophy data is not updated, unless you manually do it? That's a rip.
But existing is basically all I do!
