Itagaki Talks DOA 4, Only 15% Complete

Yes people, that build of the game was ONLY 15% of what the Xbox360 is made up of. IGN.com for info.

    quote:
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
May 18, 2005 - Following the unveiling of DOA 4 at Microsoft's Press Conference, Tomonobu Itagaki spoke briefly with IGN regarding his latest fighter. First, Itagaki assured us that the version we saw at the conference was only 15% complete and that the game has not yet tapped into the true power of Xbox 360. We assume the clipping seen in the early part of the trailer won't be part of the final build, which is still targeted for Xbox 360's launch.

As for online play, Team Ninja is still analyzing the power of the new Xbox Live. With Xbox 360, hundreds of people should be able to sit in and spectate on tournaments. With DOA 4 tournaments, we can expect tosee many Itagaki hopes that Arcade Lounges for DOA 4 far exceed the eight-player max of DOAU, but feels fifty players would be too many. So expect something comfortably in the middle. And clans will play a prominent role in DOA 4 online play.

As for the new characters, three have been confirmed and all were seen in the trailer.

    * Kokoro - The black-hair beauty from the trailer uses Hakkyoku-Ken style. This is the same style used by Akira in Virtua Fighter.

    * Eliot - The blonde boy from the trailer uses Keii Ken style, which is about quick, single hits and open-palm strikes.

    * Mystery Wrestler - Uses pro-wrestling moves and in the video she clearly uses Capoeira, the Brazilian dance/fighting style. We're quite certain this is Lisa from DOAX, but it has not been confirmed.

Itagaki went into great detail explaining the origins of the fighting system for the previous Dead or Alive games. Originally, DOA was designed as an arcade fighter. Because there wouldn't be too many people in an arcade at one time playing one game, Itagaki felt that making the game too complex gave an unfair advantage to a great gamer. In other words, if it was difficult to master in the arcade, once someone mastered the moves, everyone else would stand no chance. For this reason, DOA has previously focused on offense. It's always been easy for anyone to play and has never challenged the complexity of Virtua Fighter.

However, with tens of thousands playing Dead or Alive Ultimate online, Itagaki feels that the field is so much broader and gamer skills more advanced that DOA 4 will be far more challenging than in the past. That doesn't mean you can't pick it up and enjoy it, but the complexity many have asked for is finally being added, according to Itagaki.

Further, DOA 4 is now focused on defense instead of offense. Gamers will need good reflexes and a sharp eye to anticipate their opponent's next move. Expect more fluid combat with players reacting to one another in kind in larger environments that are far more interactive than previous DOA titles.

The true test of any fighter is the gameplay. We won't know the full extent of improvements until play DOA 4 and decide for ourselves

I hope, for their sake, the DOA4 trailer was the "crappy" version of their game. Because the character models were very comparable to the Xbox DOA.

X2, seriously. Read the article again, because the title of your thread is misguiding. It says that the game is 15 % complete and it states nothing concrete about the power-yield. I do believe it will look much better later in development, but please - read before you post.

Yeah, I suspected this as such. While the E3 trailer definitely has its high points (the wrestling ring scenes come to mind) it's nice to know that we can expect more in the way of visual quality and hearing Itagaki state that the trailer is representative of only 15% of the 360s power gives me much hope for Microsoft's chances against the PS3 juggernaut. Oh, and just as a sidenote, that black woman in DOA4 is hot!

Currently playing? Skyrim (360). White Knight Chronicles (PS3). Majoras Mask (Wii). Final Fanasy VII (PS2). Just completed? Final Fantasy VI.

What am I missing here? Are you people just skimming through the article? Anyways - yes, she is hot!

EDIT: I hardly see the the word I used as cussing, seeing as it just means "cursed", but whatever. Thanks for the advice, though.

Seriously. Stop cussing or your posts will just be deleted.

And yes...you guys are missing and/or misinterpreting what the article is saying. The game is 15% complete...not using 15% of the Xbox 360's power, like True Poet said.

However, the article did say this:

the game has not yet tapped into the true power of Xbox 360. We assume the clipping seen in the early part of the trailer won't be part of the final build, which is still targeted for Xbox 360's launch.
That still doesn't mean much, though.

What clipping scene are they referring to??

Also, FINALLY!!! Itagaki actually decides to add some depth to the game...

If the game is only 15% complete I hope this entails they will add facial animations and they'll improve collision detection. I'll be very interested to see what they can pull out of the system, as TeamNinja is always a good example of what the hardware can do.

I understand that the game is only 15% done, but this brings up a point too.

Going by what PBM says here...

I hope, for their sake, the DOA4 trailer was the "crappy" version of their game. Because the character models were very comparable to the Xbox DOA.
Now, I haven't done any research for the sole fact that I'm not interested in these type of games, but if 15% of Microsoft's 360 is equal to the power of the original Xbox, that would mean that the 360 is about, 7 times the power of the Original Xbox, where Microsoft stated it would be about 13 times the power of Xbox.

It's all just speculation of coarse, you can't figure something like that out by multiplying the percentage, but it brings up an interesting point.

Umm... just to point out one thing, though it was already said... anyway, 15% DONE is not equivalent to 15% POWER... in other words, Itagaki isn't talking about power... he's talking about gameplay and the game itself.
