It's been about a year since I've looked into the 360, and it's piquing my interest again.
A salesman at EB Games told me that the RROD problem in the new 360 units have been fixed.
He said that the failure rate for 360's used to be around 40%, now it's below 5%.
Is this true?
He also mentioned that since the days of RROD that microsoft has changed chipsets, and are changing them yet again. Do these new chipsets effect performance?
The salesman also said that the 360 is the much better gaming console. PS3 is more of an entertainment centre. Any thoughts on that?
I'm a little confused about that considering most of the games for the 360 and PS3 are the same games.
I'm also wondering about the PS3 having more graphical power than the 360. The games look and play close to identical. Some 360 games look very impressive. I'm just wondering if the PS3 really does have much of an edge power wise?
I'm not a hardcore gamer, I think that is obvious from this post. I'm just looking for answers from people that are more knowledgeable.
Thanks!

The Falcon systems are just fine. They run MUCH cooler, and if you look around on google, you'll see that there are VERY few issues with the Falcon systems. The newest version is supposed to be out though no one has found one, but I think you're good to go either way. I'd definitely get a PRP from Gamestop or Best Buy depending where you get, just in case you have issues later on down the road.

The new Jasper chip consoles do have under a 5% failure rate, and there should be plenty of them in stores right now, I have the falcon and it runs relatively cool and I have never had a problem with it but if you really want the most reliable one then the jasper Shouldn't be hard to find. The new chipsets coming out look to reduce the failure rate even more and make the system much cooler, bu the current ones are more than fine.
I don't think the 360 is a "better" gaming console, but Microsoft have put more effort I believe into an actual gaming experience than Sony who went for the swiss army knife approach, xbox live is still in a mass majority of gamers minds far superior to PSN and it is getting upgraded again very soon, if online matters the most then the 360 is the way to go, but Sony haven't left gamers out in the rain or anything, it's just when you are putting so much stuff into a system everything can't be the same level as the system that focuses on a few key strengths.
In terms of software the 360 has a slight advantage in quantity(100 or so titles) a pretty big one in critic reception, and an enormous one in actual exclusive software sales, but Sony has some of the best games this gen as well, Resistance 1 and 2, MGS4, Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted are all exclusive titles and all fantastic.
Hardware power is where it gets tricky, so far the two systems have been pretty much neck and neck, most non exclusive devs that have had experience with both from what I have seen have stated that the PS3 has a tad more power but getting it from it is extremely difficult, John Carmack who I trust above every other dev on the planet, believes the PS3 has about 20 percent more theoretical power, basically the system is a pain in the *** the develop for because of it's unique architecture even if it has a bit more power to be had, Killzone 2 is the first game to actually give a hint as to what it can do, but the thing is for the most part you are only going to see that level of quality from first party devs, as of this moment Gears 2 IMO blows every other released console game out of the water graphically.

Honestly... about a month ago I picked up another Xbox 360 and it lasted me 3 weeks.

I'm just wondering where you got the 5% from, since the Jasper systems just came out, although I'm skeptical since no one has proven to have one right now. I know the Falcon systems were said to have a "sub 10%" failure rate, and anything is better than the XENON or Zephyr systems.

They came out a couple months ago so most 360's on shelves right now should be that model, they have sold hundreds of thousands of units since then so I think it's safe to say they are far more reliable, I can't remember where I saw the 5% at, it was in a thread on here a while back and there was a source.

Not trying to argue with you, so don't take this the wrong way. You say they've been out for months, yet Benheck.com has yet to find one, nor has anyone at llamma.com or xbox-scene.com. The only thing that's out right now is the Falcon systems with the revised RAM chips, as that's what's people are finding when the OPEN their system. Which is really the only way to tell, unless the GPU heatsink is different than other models.

There's no way anyone can know that the Jasper failure rate is sub 5% yet. It's way too new. The Falcons are just fine, but get the newer one if you can. I've yet to see anyone CONFIRM they have one by cracking it open.

Mine is actually a Jasper system. I bought it right around when they released. I "might" be having an issue with mine. I can't really tell yet. I think it may just be the HDMI cable I am using. Funny colors and fluctuations on the screen while gaming but they are very sporadic and short when it does happen.

Actually, I think I'm on of the few gamers around that on-line isn't very important too.
I prefer single person gaming with a good story. Like MGS. Second Sight for the PS2. Stuff like that.
You guys mentioned trying to get one with a certain chip. How would you know which chip you are getting without opening the 360?
Also, someone mentioned GOW2 being the best graphical game out. Speaking of graphics and everything else that goes into making a good game, is it better than MGS4 and Resistance 2?
-
11-16-2008 #16
Well the PS3 fans will tell you no, but until I personally played Gears2 I still felt MGS4 was the best looking console game out, but gears looks far better, and Resistance Doesn't stand a chance.
As far as the actual game goes, gears 2 is like a pop corn action movie and MGS4 is more artsy, the actual story in Gears 2 can't be compared to MGS4, Gears constantly changed up the gameplay though while MGS4 basically had you doing the same thing over and over, honestly if I had to pick one of the games I Couldn't, MGS is my favorite game series of all time however.
If you don't really care about online then I would go with the PS3.

I didn't find R2 all that graphically appealing. I played it at my friend's house yesterday and I wasn't too amazed by it.

My friend is starting to worry about his falcon model. He said it got the rrod but went back to normal when he stopped playing for a day.
-

The RROD can happen for a few reasons. One being the A/V cables are loose. Some people also think any red light is the RROD. It's only when certain quadrants are lit up.

I can't believe people are still carrying on about the RRoD of consoles at this point.

Yep, MS really dropped the ball with the design of the 360. Great game system though, with a ton of great games.

Yet some of the top modders on the net including Ben Heckerndorn have yet to FIND one? I'm people THINK they have the new board in their 360, but how are they coming to this conclusion? No one has posted pics, as I can guarantee that no one has opened the system and pulled the heatsink off to check the die size, or checked the voltage used compared to the Falcon boards. Until I see that proof, I'm gonna say they aren't out yet because no one has FOUND one. Check google, and I guarantee their are no confirmed Jasper systems yet. YET.
I'm betting they don't hit until mid December, or January. The 360 is being bundled with two games right now, and I'm betting that's to clean out existing stock of Falcon systems to make room for the newer systems. Also, MS just revised the Falcon board in June, so it would make sense if they delayed Jasper just a bit longer.
