no price cut for ps3 is really hurting sony now, MS price cut on 360 made a huge leap on the ps3 again.
its sad that ps3 owners are not buying exclusive games for ps3 or supporting MP games, while gears2 sold 3.1 mil to-date and still counting, R2 just broke the 500k mark, 360 exclusives are breaking a million easily. with the black friday sales, 360 selling 3 to 1 according to a few articles, meaning ps3 losing grounds until next year. if this goes on, more exclusives for the 360 and alot more back stabing from devs like 2007.
the ps3 was close at the start of 2008 with only a 5 million difference, ps3 15m and 360 20m, now by my prediction, its going to be: ps3 19m and 360 28m or more. sony should of gave the ps3 a price cut, or cheap bundles. 360 only costing 199.99, plus 19.99 for a 20gb HDD, its a pretty good deal against a 399 40gb ps3. sony needs to kick up a notch or they will lose this gen and the playstation brand.

You shouldn't have the illusion that your strategy that you made up in a minute is better then Sony's. It's good that they are doing there own thing instead of panic and pricedropping to 200 just because the competition is already at that price. There will be a time in the ps3 life cycle when it will be around current 360 price.

who the heck cares??? god im tired of these freaking doom and gloom thread. We have a massive exclusive lineup, an awesome online service, great features, and a reliable console. Just because a mcdonalds cheeseburger sells more than a steak doesn't mean it's better (i'll stop saying it when people get it through their freaking head). you people are never satisfied, sony obviously isn't worried about sales do you not think that they know a 200 dollar console is going to sell more than a 400 dollar console? ps3 is selling just fine just because 360 is selling more doesn't mean ps3 is doing bad, stop worrying about freaking system sales and play your dam games.

You seriously think that pricing will happen anytime soon? Even the PS2 is still selling at $99 now. The cheapest the 360 can go would be $150 IMO, they are already not earning much from the 360.
And why you guys should even care about the PS3 sales? Just forget about it and enjoy the games. If Sony really want to win this console war, they will do something about it.
And talking about sales numbers, the PS3 is catching up real fast as well. Plus look how much the PSN has improved since day 1? Look how the PS3 improved since day 1? They will start to improve, and when people start to notice, they will purchase a PS3 for sure. I am sure lots of people are still stuck with the PS2, waiting for the correct time to upgrade to a PS3.
Games like GOWIII, FFXIII and GT5 will make people get a PS3. 2009 will be a great year for PS3 owners(I didn't say the year of the PS3
), no doubt about it.

do you guys realize that the ps3 has a lot more standard than the cheap 360. free online bigger hdd that is easliy upgradable, hdmi standard, and is still one of the best bluray players on the market. so all those people can have fun getting rrod with the cheap, unreliable 360's

You know, maybe that guy with the post about PS3 fans not being grateful is right after all.
1. We complained the PS3 had no games: We got a crapload of games this year. This was truly the year of the PS3 in terms of software.
2. We complained about PSN not having this and not having that: And yet we got some amazing games like Wipeout HD, Stardust, and many others.
And another thing: You do not work for Sony. Stop worrying about them. They're running at their own pace. They don't have to beat the 360 to be profitable. As long as they sell at a comfortable number where we'll see another console, that's what matters.
I'm sick of this console war already. About time we enjoy some damn games and let things run their course.
Amen. Let's just enjoy the games.anyway i'm not on that side of the fence, I love my ps3, i was merely pointing out the flaw in the argument that 'someday the ps3 will cost $200'.
anyway you guys have your wars... i've found that arguing with 360 owners is a complete waste of time, it's like trying to argue the mac or linux over a windows computer, people just don't listen.
But be prepared for any 360 loyalist to come in here with links claiming that Microsoft are making profits for each 360 sold.

First - for the record, i am a HUGE ps3 fan, i love my ps3, do not own a 360 and do not intend to. I purchased my 60gb two weeks after launch and have never been happier and have had no regrets.
second - Microsoft is already losing money on every 360 sale, how much they're losing will go down. Also, Microsoft has deep enough pockets that I'm imagining their vision is a 20-30 year vision, not a ten year plan. They've stated that the first xbox was jsut a test to see what it took to get in the market, and if you think microsoft will EVER let the ps3 price get as low as the 360, IMHO you are mistaken. You seriously think that pricing will happen anytime soon? Even the PS2 is still selling at $99 now. The cheapest the 360 can go would be $150 IMO, they are already not earning much from the 360.
Microsoft is a corporation which chooses its enemies and sticks with them, but will also get in bed with them if it helps MS, they're willing to do ANYTHING to make money. Halo was originally developed by Bungie exclusively for the mac, what did Microsoft do to prevent this? purchase bungie.....
I"m not on their side, and i'm not arguing 'doom and gloom' and i'm not ragging on my ps3, i'm only acknowledging a legitimate issue with the fact that Microsoft is a company willing to do anything to make money, and if that involves losing a meesley 100 dollars per console, in order to prevent console sales for a competitor to keep the separation in this generation of a 'console race' instead of letting them close the gap... i'm positive they will:
anyway i'm not on that side of the fence, I love my ps3, i was merely pointing out the flaw in the argument that 'someday the ps3 will cost $200'.They will give them out free and earning on live and the games.
anyway you guys have your wars... i've found that arguing with 360 owners is a complete waste of time, it's like trying to argue the mac or linux over a windows computer, people just don't listen.

honestly i've about had it with the console war BS. Back in the day it made sense because gaming wasn't near as widespread (until ps2) so they were really fighting for market share and a few million made a difference because it didn't used to be such a big market NOW just about everyone plays games to some degree every company can have a piece of the pie sort of speak. NONE of the system manufacturers are doing BAD in fact they are all doing very very well.
Like i said before just shut up and play your freaking games your ps3 isn't all of a sudden going to not be supported it already has a big enough install base to attract devs and as for exclusives MS doesn't have enough money to pay devs for exclusives when they take such a big hit from repairs for the RROD and they don't make alot of profit off of the console sales and they don't make enough games in house to make money that way when DLC costs 50 million alone think about how much a whole game would cost.
Seriously just stop with this doom and gloom BS.

Microsoft won't allow Sony to let it's price to be as low as their console? How the hell would you know Sony won't? O.O
And, i believe MS just wants the market share, they want to have a piece in everything, not just a company that just wants to make money(which company doesn't?). But they should jolly well know they can't have everything, they believe they can just swing their money around in the gaming business and win? It's not that easy

I don't think Sony is going to "lose thier playstation brand". Simply because Sony is more gets so much money from thier other two systems as well (the PS2 and the
PSP). Thier company also produces stuff like TVs, electronics and stuff like that. So there probably will be a Playstation 4.

I love these posts. While we understand what they mean, they have to do it in a strickly fanboy style that makes nobody want to listen to them especially when a few of the things they list arnt even true, and they left out points that would have better got their point across.
Anyways, seriously, both consoles are great, but if I was a parent going into this fall, and I was looking at gaming consoles not knowing much about them (buying for my kid) I would choose the 360. The bundles in the stores right now (around my area anyways) are better, include more games, and are cheaper.
For two systems that are basically the same (oh noez, what did I just say, I r dead now 4 saying such things), it is a no brainer to alot of the parents out there.
Now if I was educated in what each one had to offer, and where hidden expenses go, it would still be a hard choice, but at least the PS3 stands up fairly well (if they have the money), however, the OP while being another blatent gloom and doom thread poster, does have a point that there is no way the PS3 will outsell the 360 this holiday season worldwide (maybe in a specific region, but not total). This is coming from a person who owns both consoles, the PS3 since launch, and plays both fairly regularly.

Dropping the price before they're ready means they loose more money than they gain by waiting for the market to stabilize before dropping. the 36* price drop is always a panic move. they see their margins slipping so they drop their price into the basement to avoid loosing ground regardless of their profits. it's the same thing they did last gen the only difference is they have a larger install base with should also automatically explain the higher attach rate with games like gears2. Of course meanwhile the Wii murders the 36* in numbers even being more expensive despite the fact that the games dont sell.
The people buying brand-x are used to the multiplayer aspects of live and feel a need to exploit them which means multiplayer games like Halo and Gears will see huge numbers. Resistance 2 is coming out during a period where 1. there are a LOT of other games out and 2. the economy makes it hard to justify buying all of them at the same time. I will admit that Sony's still doing a poor job of marketing though because there've been only a single push for Resistance 2 where the competition in Gears is built on a much higher level of buzz from the first game's visibility and the more frequent commercial blitz for the second game.
In an average day you'll see 5 commercials with the X brand on it to 1 PS3 branded commercial. Sony spends their money pushing things like WWE wrestling games and hosting BMX stunt shows (which might have hit their demographics 5 years ago but it's not cutting it so much today), They're being too specific rather than putting their mark out more frequently during things like action shows on network TV or saturday morning cartoons. What they NEED is a super bowl blitz, people are just not being exposed to the playstation vision enough so they need something high profile.

12-02-2008 #20I only threw that in there because i found it funny, and correct at the same time. I think that microsoft would be perfectly willing to do this to protect market share/profits.Wasnt trying to start any wars, just failed at being funny.
^^i believe MS just wants the market share, they want to have a piece in everything
I'd agree with this.
seems to be kind of effective so far.. purchase limited exclusives, protect exclusives, and purchase competing companies..... ?? not saying i agree.. just saying, they really hopped in this market with a vengence for a company that never made gaming consoles until a few years ago...just swing their money around in the gaming business and win? It's not that easy

Sure 360 may be winning in sales, but it is just a matter of time before the PS3 catches up. The only reason it has picked up is a price cut, not because it is doing anythig truly amazing. Now that the 360 is as low as it can go, they will not be able to have any huge leaps, where the PS3 still has room to price cut. Sony will catch up, dont worrr.

I survived the apolalyps3 of 1999!

Thank you thank you thank you, I'm glad someone said something about that when did gamers ever care about sells. Just have fun with what you have sounds like people need medication for video games now
. Whats up with that i love the PS3 its the best system out there everything gamers want Sony gives.
Another thing that's funny is how people forget how much the system can do and PSN is amazing free and catching up with Xbox Lag i mean Live. It's a Ok service but to pay for service and get lag with Gears 2 is bad belive me i have it and have a right to to complain since i pay $50 a year. So shut up play games best advice to give to everyone. Not A Fanboy Just A Gamer

I think the fans are the only ones creating a stir. Well that, and MS with their press releases. Sony's sales were up for the PS3 90% over last year's "black friday." They have stated on record that they are happy with their first party titles (including the sales - shock!). While I'm sure they are watching marketshare closely, they don't seem to be much worried about it. So then, why should we?
Great system? check!
Great games? check!
Great exclusives? check!
Games well into 2010? check!
Third party support? check!
Okay then. I'm good. All that's left to do is continue playing my PS3 games that I have some serious backlog issues with.
