Source: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/wh...-of-xbox-live/Well, we certainly didn't see this coming. Gears of War 2 is finally on store shelves, and who do we see at the top of the Xbox Live play time pile? Master Chief. No, seriously! Halo 3 took the top of a list rounded out by Gears 2, Call of Duty: World at War, CoD 4 and GTA IV.
So, we honestly don't have an answer for you on this one, we can't imagine why. We're also flummoxed as to why Left 4 Dead is so darn low. Anyone for some late Tuesday hypothesizing?
Kind of surprising, bur not really.

Wow... Out of all the games.
I enjoyed Halo 3 but I enjoyed them other games more.

Two things I want to point out.
1. The CoD fanbase is split between two games at the moment due to WaW's release. Let the dust settle a few weeks later, and then we'll see who's on top.
2. Halo 3 was meant to last. And this idea works because it will not have a direct MP sequel for years. Plus, high popularity remains for a long time. Once you're up on the charts, it's hard to fall back.

I'm not surprised about this at all. Halo 3 is very fun and its the only game most of my friends play.

I'm not surprised. The population exploded when Team Snipers was made into a playlist.

Not surprising at all.
Halo 3 is one of the most accessable MP shooters.
You can kill enemies without getting real close to them like Gears and you dont get gunned down after a good spray in the chest like in COD.
It suits the less competitive players like myself and is actually quite fun when you get to fly the Banshees.

The fact Halo 3 keeps rolling with online play like it has been shows the force and true popularity of the Halo franchise. As for me I haven't played Halo 3 online in probably over 6 months, but trust me the urges are still there. Especially ones involving sniping someone in the face!!!!

It's because people got fed up with Gears 2. The core gameplay of Gears 2 is great. But with the shoddy matchmaking, crappy connections and just pure BS (smoke grenades, over powered chainsaw, walltagging, shotty hitting the floor from hip shots, ect.), is what makes it so unappealing at time.
Epic....FIX YOUR ****ING GAME!!!!

Thats funny...I haven't had the urge to play Halo 3 online in ages. However, I do have the urge to play a military sim like OFP2 or ArMA2. Hell, even Gears 2 is getting old, although the bots still put up a good fight most of the time on insane.

Halo has always had the most staying power of any shooter out there, the community for that game is rabid and dedicated, I don't think any console shooter series will ever have the same level of consistent popularity.

Bungie knows how to make online shooters thats why. They provide an almost flawless matchmaking/party system, they provide enough weapons to keep things interesting, give players an INSANE amount of customization options so they can create an experience that caters to their liking. Bungie should get an award for their work in the online realm. They have certainly done a lot for Xbox and Xbox Live.

The issue is no one does it like Bungie. COD4 has come the closest and its still far off. No console shooter matches what Bungie has done in the online realm which is why Halo 3 is so popular online and has the respect it has in the gaming community.
