Why are so many anime fans so freakin weird?

Before ya'll get your flame on, I'm not generalizing and saying all are, or trying to anime "zomg japanimation sux lolz." I loved DBZ and got the box set of Gurren Lagann sitting right here, I can dig an anime series time to time. But seriously why does it attract some of the weirdest mofos to it? Practically everytime I'm at Best Buy or Borders there's always some freak in the anime/manga section; more often than not the manga section.

I was in Borders and this lumbering goon sporting a full neckbeard and a Naruto headband was salivating over some loli manga, stinkin up the joint. I was rifling through a stack of clearance books looking for 'World War Z' and could see him out of the corner of my eye. He kept furtively looking around and I half expected him to start ******* right there in the aisle. Finally I find what I'm looking for and I walk past him, and he looks up at me asking if that's World War Z.
As soon as I say yes he launches into a talk about zombies and asks if I like manga, i tell him "no" and try to distance myself from the basement-dwelling ogre. He was so keen to talk to me he followed my to the check out, where I then told him to GTFO and let my buy my book.

Then anoter time I was at Best Buy trying to find season 3 of Entourage. The aisle was connected to the anime aisle, and this gothy, overweight chick was looking at anime box sets a few feet away from me. I picked up the box of an anime called "Full Metal Panic" (big mistake) and IMMEDIATELY she slunked over and started talking to me about it. Within about 15 seconds it was clear this girl was out of her god damn mind. I grabbed Entourage and told her I was leaving.

But everytime I always see people like this in the anime/manga sections. I don't know what it is about japanese media that attracts these freakshows but maybe someone could enlighten me. People like that are the reason it's a secret that I watch anime from time to time. i dont want to be lumped into the same category as that. And don't even get me started on hentai ffs.

Thread is HOS material for real. (If we even have it anymore)

Anyway, this is a stupid generalization. That's like saying "Why do only freaks and pathetic people watch porn?!" When most of the population does. You just can't generalize that a certain type of entertainment attracts freakshows.

Why don't you actually read the post.

First sentence was me saying I'm not generalizing, obviously not all anime fans are freaks. But plenty of them DEFINITELY are, and I was wondering why anime/manga attracts those people.

Because anime is the "underground" of entertainment.

Okay then, I'm generalizing. Anime certainly does have a disproportionate amount of fail in it's fanbase though. I'm just wondering why that is, what type of person is attracted to it?

I actually agree with you. For the most part, it does always seem like the "uglies" are the most driven by the perfect romance in anime. It's quite understandable though. They aren't experiencing it themselves, so they use anime as an escape.

    Just my theory...

No one can experience "perfect romance".

Well, I see that this is another case of stereotyping a group of people you don't understand.

Ah, I didn't read your entire post.

I may as well just keep it short and simple. Amongst the normal fans of anime, there are those who are really passionate with anime. Some who go as far as to dress up as their favorite characters (i.e. cosplay) or re-enact certain scenes depicted in certain anime shows or movies. It's just a case of not getting to know those who are passionate with their hobbies, I guess. So it's easy for one to assume that they're weird.

I'm a normal fan myself. I watch some anime. That's about it. I won't bug you about it, though, lol.

I don't watch any anime or that stuff cause I find it horrendously boring...BUT...

To say they were weird implies that there is a normality. Well, there isn't - we're all weird. I find the way you articulate yourself weird (i.e. the typical "American cool guy" dialect) yet you will find it perfectly normal.

I find people who follow football so much that it is almost dictates their life as geeks - they are! But they will probably punch you if you say it.

We're all freaks - be happy in who you are.

i don't agree with this comment at all...i know i know they try to teach you in elementary school and what not that there's no such thing as "normal" and that everyone is weird.

There may not be a definition of who's normal...however, there's a gaussian distribution of criteria that would probably define "normal" individuals...

Cleanliness, socialization skills, eating habits, etc

I don't think anyone would find it socially unacceptable that you might wear some clothes a couple of times without washing them...nor would you find it socially unacceptable that you change your clothes every day. However, if you wear those clothes without washing and having them be clearly unkempt/filthy/odiferous etc, you would be classified as being outside the social norm.

Same with socialization skills...some people can't socialize well and try to avoid contact with others to an extent and yet others socialize with some random stranger in a line. Neither are considered to be outside the social norm. However, if you act like a hermit and do everything possible to stay away from society or if you socialize with every single person regardless of whether you know them or not...then you would also be classified as being outside the social norm.

I don't think it's a good or bad thing that there are such things as social normality...it just exists. Admittedly, this probably sounds a bit hypocritical, but I also do think that people who are obsessive about excessively trying to stay within that normal distribution are also weird :P

As a curioisty, what was the last "Good one" in your opinion?

anyway, the obvious answer is that is fuglies are the only people completely devoid of shame and thus capable of buying anime in public. the rest of us normies use the internet and stay in the closet. It's arguable as to which mentality is healthier.

Ah yes but how much of normality is dictated by real similarities and how much is dictated by the media and society as a whole? I know many, many people who yearn to "fit in" when just because you're "normal" doesn't mean you are superior in any form. Maybe that's how I should have worded it. To claim people are weird is to degrade them...but that is so obviously vain that it does make me feel a little sick.

That logic doesn't prove true for me though. I'm not one of those fat, bearded, smelly guys that MrAnderson was talking about. I'm a fit, athletic, normal-looking 19-year old and not only do I buy anime in public, but I take out my DBZ/Gundam DVDs in front of my friends and roommates all the time and start watching.

I don't see what there is to be ashamed of. Everyone likes different shows.
