They do for me anyway. I buy games off PSN just to get trophies more or less. I fall into the trap of thinking that it'd be the quickest and easiest way of getting trophies. However, alot of PSN games are real pain in the butt for trophies.
The point is, they seem to take something away from games. I know myself, these days I try not to purchase games that don't have trophy support. I bought Ratchet and Clank, Tools of Destruction and Motorstorm. Neither have trophy support and as a result, I hardly play them.
Gameplay should be the main objective for any game, but I know for me, a game isn't worth it unless it has trophy support.
Do trophies take the edge of gaming these days??

I know what you mean. But I dont think they necessarily take anything away from games. It's more like they do something to our minds to make us shun any non-trophy game.

Trophies/acheivements is one of the greatest things to happen gaming since they give you an extra challenge after beating the game. I play games wether or not they have trophies. My non-trophy games are Motorstorm and Resistance. I haven't played them lately, but it's because I've been into the Nazi zombie maps and Fallout 3. But once I'm done with both, I need to go play Motorstorm, because honestly, that's the game that convinced me and my dad to buy a PS3. And I've neglected the game A LOT.
But no, I think the gameplay has taken the edge of gaming. Trophies just enhance it.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]Platinum/100%: -Fallout 3- -Call of Duty: World at War- -Bioshock- -Modern Warfare 2- -Bioshock 2-

Personally, I love collecting trophies and I actually think that rather than taking something away from gaming, they enhance the experience a great deal. e.g. pushing you to try harder difficulties, making you explore environments, using weapons you might not normally, encouraging teamwork, and so on and so on. Essentially, they enhance replay value in a massive way.
I'm not sure I follow your point of view though, in so much as I'd imagine that people who don't care for the trophy system, for whatever reason, would simply disregard it altogether - after all, the occasional "ping" mid-game is easily ignored. I don't see trophies as taking anything away from the core gameplay experience - merely something that adds to it. Generally speaking, you could play through a game quite happily, enjoying nothing but the story until you were done, and then go for trophies when you were done. Ultimately though, the decision lies with the gamer, so it'll always be up to you what defines a good gaming experience.

I just look at trophies as a way to extend your game's lifespan. I play it without even thinking about trophies the first time, and then if I liked the game I will go back to check the trophy list and try to get them. I can imagine that getting too wrapped up in them could ruin a game though.

To me trophy only serve the purpose of giving replay value.
The Force Unleashed doesn't have trophy support but i still play it jus to throw the lightsaber around and force blast crap. But if a dev wants a game to rise to the next level then they should include trophy support .
imo sony should make it mandatoryPSN:LS7Knightmare

I see it as if a game is good, trophies are just icing on the cake. Some games are perfectly fine without trophies, (MGS4,R&C:F, R:FOM, etc) but would benefit from having them. And other games (Terminator, etc) don't benefit from trophies at all because they are haphazardly thrown into the game as an addition, and not well integrated. I think that trophies should add replay value and make the game more interesting and challenging. It isn't a purchase point for me, but trophies do have the ability to enhance games that are hopefully already good.

Trophies and achievements are great but it would be good if they put trophies on EVERY game just like achievements and I still play them even if they don't have trophies though but trophies do make you want to play harder just to get every last one

I love trophies and achievements. The guy who came up with the original idea deserves a raise.

Gone are the days of cheats and codes, GTA IV still has cheats but you don't get the trophies then.

No, I still buy games that don't have trophies. Although lately games I've purchased do have trophies but that's because Sony now wants it to be a mandatory feature.
