    PS3 Cell Storage

In his interview this week, Ken Kutaragi talked about being able to convert your standard video to a high definition (HD) through Cell Storage. Does anyone know anymore about this? How will this service work? Will that be part of a paid online service?

"Users will be able to store their content in an online storage server called the 'Cell Storage.' And the Cell processor, when it's not being used, can refine the content's quality. We call it the 'aging' process. For example, users can 'age' their Standard Definition (SD) video and up-convert it to High Definition (HD) video. We have many plans, but this 'Cell Storage' service is something that we definitely intend to launch. By using the Cell's security feature, users will be able to rip DVDs that include copyright protection and lay it in the storage area to refine its video quality."

Unless the PS3 does all the ripping and storage itself via automation, it sounds like too much work for me. Why not just offer videos online as a "Cyberworld" feature?

Well if that CELL storage means HDD that is attached to PS3, I can't wait for those 1TB HDDs that manufacturers are bringing us in Q1 2007. Imagine all those crappy DVDs could be converted to HD quality without buying new disks with HDTV version in it.

Sounds awesome and if that means I have to push some few buttons to get the "aging" process to start it does not bother me!

I heard Intel was also bringing this "aging" thing to markets but the took it back cos these new dual core Pentium4 processors were too slow for that task. Why did not they licensed CELL?

Truely sound like a nice feature. I just hope it will function properly, and not just being a cool thing that almost works, and that on just few movies.

But after all, sony has stuffed the ps3 full of toys so why would this matter be different?

    Home_cell Storage Connection

Ahh as my first post I would like to point out a old feature mentioned by the great mr kutargi. With all the latest news surrounding sony's new Home feature; it would appear as if this may be were the whole cell storage idea will be implemented.

PS3 should be able to up converte video on your HDD real time.
I think he meant those blade server (cell server).
But why would you conver a SD video to HD on a external server is out of my imagination.
