Well keep in mind that last season, even though McLaren were doing $#@!e, they were punching above their weight when they weren't developing! We all know what happens with McLaren when they do develop throughout the season so I would also keep an eye on them now too, especially with the big Ron at the helm. Also this season I think Williams will be pushing upgrades hard too, especially now with that technical team they have. Wherever Pat Symonds has gone there has always been some form of championship won - HRT doesn't count.

    Yes mate sorry lol

I think it's way too soon to say that no one is going to catch up with Mercedes, but it's also up to Mercedes to make sure they keep that pace and even build on it so by the time other teams do catch up it will be a little too late anyway!

Keep in mind that the success of mercedes is down to Brawn.

Paddy Lowe is merely reaping the benefits of Brawns hard work. Now that he's running the ship, i doubt the mercs will continue to power forward as they have these past 3 years.

If brawn still had the helm, i'd say the mercs (with their 1 sec lap delta over the field) would be the de-facto champs of 2014. Paddy Lowe casts uncertainty on that thought.

Brawn near enough funded his own team to victory. Not to mention, Ross Brawn is from the same cloth as Adrian Newey (aerodynamisists).

Just watched the film "1: Life on the Limit" and all I can say is that if you're a true F1 fan you have to watch it, just remember to bring a box of tissues because some of those moments I remember vividly when I was younger and I was literally crying - especially Ayrton and Roland and Imola in '94.

Yeah I heard about that, must give it a watch!

Still brings a tear to my eye when Micheal Schumacher got upset as he reached Senna's total win tally, very emotional moment for him

The film really did make you open your eyes about how F1 has changed over the years and what Bernie and Max have done for the sport. Ayrton clearly was the last straw about safety regulations. The cover absolutely everything regarding the deaths and safety in F1 over the years that it makes it a real must watch in understanding why they're trying to slow the cars down and doing what they are currently doing. Having said that though I don't think Max wanted F1 to go in the direction Todt has taken it.

Damn that film really made me cry, I don't think I've cried like that since I was a youngun'.

Mclaren team boss eric boullier has defended formula 1's new engines in the wake of complaints they have an uninspiring sound.

F1 boss bernie ecclestone says he was "horrified" by v6 turbo hybrids, which are much quieter than the old v8 ones.

Boullier said: "we can't dismiss it if fans complain but we also have to see some positives and not focus only on the noise."

engines are among several f1 changes this year.

Boullier pointed out that the engines mirror the direction of the road-car industry and had been embraced by manufacturers.
    Claire williams

“personally i like the sound of the engines, but then i love f1 and i love watching cars go round a racetrack”

claire williams williams deputy team principal

"this new power-unit we have developed is a completely industry-relevant engine formula and this is why we could attract some new engine manufacturers and keep some of them on board actually," he said.

Renault, one of the three companies producing the engines, threatened to quit f1 if the sport did not introduce a new formula that reflected the greater efficiency now popular in road-car power-plants.

And honda, which quit f1 in 2008, has decided to come back to the sport with mclaren in 2015.

The new f1 features 1.6-litre v6 turbo engines with extensive energy recovery systems, and cars must complete races using no more than 100kg (about 130 litres) of fuel.

Boullier, mclaren's racing director, added that at the first race of the season in australia last weekend the new cars had proven more of a challenge for the drivers than last year's.

"this new formula has a very torquey engine, less aerodynamic downforce. It is more of a driver formula and you could see that this weekend; there were a lot of small mistakes.

"and even if there is a need to manage and save fuel and energy, it was still interesting to see some overtaking and it was really a challenge for the drivers.

"it's true the engine sound is different but it's not very different from the turbo sound we had in the 70s [and 80s]. It needs a little bit of time to see what is going on and how it develops."

the team bosses of williams and mercedes have backed his views.
    Play media

    f1 2014 rule changes

williams deputy team principal claire williams said: "personally i like the sound of the engines, but then i love f1 and i love watching cars go round a racetrack.

"i think people will pretty quickly get used to what f1 engines sound like.

"we've had so many changes over so many decades of motor racing and you very quickly forget what a previous engine sounds like and i think people just want to see a good race.

"as we can deliver that then i think that any issues that perhaps... Or contentious conversations around that may fade away."

mercedes executive director (business) toto wolff said: "this is modern technology, this is where road cars are going.

"downsizing is the motto and i think we just need to accept that the formula has changed.

"these cars are going to go quicker than the old ones in a couple of races, we're going to get used to the sounds and i promise next year you will not notice any difference any more."

ecclestone, who was boss of brabham when they became in 1983 the first team to win the f1 title with turbo engines, told the daily telegraph that he would like to see something done to the engines to make them "sound like racing cars".

"we can't wait all season," ecclestone said. "it could be too late by then.

"i don't know whether it's possible but we should investigate. I think let's get the first few races out of the way and then maybe look to do something."
Agree that the current engine regs are more relevant to the road car world, but i'd say the sound and spectacle of an F1 car is still pretty important.

Put your earphones in (or don't, in fact you probably shouldn't ) and turn this bad boy up!

I said months ago during the engine reveals that they sounded "lazy" i was hoping to be proven wrong damnit!

Oh well, what we've lost in that beautiful cacophony of sound has been somewhat made back by being able to hear more nitty gritty sounds of F1.

My only complaint is the way they sound, not so much the volume. they sound so Lazy ass and lethargic. Two things i don't associate with F1.

I know they don't sound that nice but let's be honest it's now always going to be this way so we may as well get used to it

I agree, it's kinda weird watching the same race i've been watching for years and only just hearing things that have been there all along

I like the sound of the turbo, don't get me wrong, the wirring and pops are very nice. but they are revving soo looooww.
it's like turning a corner and not changing down a gear then flooring it. you get this lazy low rumble and groan from the car. this is the sound i don't like.

As the season progresses I am sure that this sound will get less and less, think it's only because it's new they just haven't got everything ironed out yet!

i just realised that the reason they make the sound i dislike is because they are essentially doing what i said above.

They are short shifting on the way up, and shifting late on the way down, so they're never reaching high RPM....duh!

I wonder what these cars actually sound like running at 15k RPM?

You know what i find funny.

If this McLaren is successful, Ron will say it was down to him.

If the car fails, Ron will say he had no active part in its development.

    win win for him

Regardless, he may have prematurely gotten rid of Witmarsh. This years car was greenlit while he still had control.

However, i don't think Mclaren can find that much pace in 2 weeks. Maybe by europe the car will be ~0.5 seconds faster, but the mercs weren't exactly running on the limit in Australia either. Rosberg cruised to victory in Aus

IMO, the red bulls are the only team who can take the challenge to the Mercs, followed by Williams and the Mclarens fighting for third....or second if the Red Bulls don't get sorted.
