http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../dd452420.aspxOn February 12, 2009, Microsoft announced a U.S. $250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for illegally launching the Conficker malicious code on the Internet. Microsoft's reward offer stems from the company's recognition that the Conficker worm is a criminal attack. Microsoft wants to help the authorities catch the criminals responsible for it. Residents of any country are eligible for the reward, in accordance with the laws of that country, because Internet viruses affect the Internet community worldwide.
What Happens on April 1, 2009?
Systems infected with the latest version of Conficker will begin to use a new algorithm to determine what domains to contact. Microsoft has not identified any other actions scheduled to take place on April 1, 2009. It is possible that systems with the latest version of Conficker may be updated with a newer version of Conficker on April 1 by contacting domains on the new domain list. However, these systems could be updated on any date before or after April 1 as well using the "peer-to-peer" updating channel in the latest version of Conficker.
The virus is supposed to steal passwords to everything you have done on your PC. Those with the virus will not be able to visit Microsofts website to find a solution. I am pretty sure that this is not an April fools joke since I have been hearing about this virus for the past few days now.
I guess you need to make sure everything is up to date. Anti-virus and Windows updates.

I'm not infected with Conficker because I still can go on anti-virus websites but can I still get infected?

Has anything even been 100% CONFIRMED yet as to what this virus is capable of? I have read a few reports on it and basically no one seems to have obtained any solid facts yet. Seems it is more speculation than anything.

Poor Microsoft. I'll be happily using my Mac worm free

Saying that, it is a shame that this is happening. Viruses and worms are never nice. There should be harsher rules, like.. 25 years in jail minimum sentence with no chance of perol
--scottscorpionthis forum is dumb.. you get infracted for posting a pic of a sexy lady with a barley see through top on, yet its ok to post video of interspecies sexual assault

Lets say there is a virus floating around that doctors say is capable of stopping your heart. But nobody knows for sure until the virus has taken full affect. Would you not get too excited about this? lol Better to take the most precaution rather than to take it lightly and have something bad happen to your PC. Its not every day that a virus makes its way on to the national news.

Is the windows update the ones where you go shut down your computer and it says install updates and shut down. With like a shield symbol over the shut down button. Is that the updates everyone is talking about?

Yes because you are connected to the internet.
Many people say they do not need AV or firewalls etc but you can get viruses by meerely browsing a website that has been compromised and if your OS and Internet browser are not up to date you risk beign exploited.
I use NOD32 and have done for the last 4 years without any infections, it has caught a few when I broseda couple of dodgy warexz sites in the past.

Quoted because he is right. If you don't use windows firewall, like me, you can very easily get a virus just by clicking on a site. The site I get my naruto from recently gave me a virus upon clicking on my bookmarks and going to it. Avast! instantly told me there was a virus and i aborted the connection.

Guess I'm the only one that thinks this is just a huge April Fools joke. I don't believe in the virus at all.

Really, I don't think there is anything to worry about. If nothing happens to your computer, then your fine. This probably is fake, or just a worm that does nothing at all. Either way, I'm running windows 7, so i don't think i can even get the worm, seeing as it was designed for XP and Vista.

It's a really old virus that apparently got an update to be stealthier. No worries.
