I have to disagree. It seems you are stating that it the number of usage times effects the overall failure rate. However, every time you use a condom you begin again with the 99% rate. It would be different if you are using the same condom over and over again as the failure rate would continue to increase, but that's not the case.....I hope

My analysis was correct - it's a simple Binomial Distribution.

Think of it this way:
In order NOT to get the STD, you have to hit 99/100, one-hundred times in a row. This means (99/100) x (99/100) x (99/100) ....

There are a total of 100 iterations. In mathematical terms, (99/100)^100.

Now, the result is the probability that you WON'T get the STD. The result is 36.6%. So to calculate the chance that you WILL get the disease is simply 100-36.6 = 63.4%

As for a better distribution, it is likely that one exists. However, I think for our purposes of this discussion - simply to show that it is likely that an STD transfer will occur with 100+ sexual acts with a condom (assuming of course that the person has the STD before the first act) - it will suffice.

It's not enough for the condom to fail to protect you, though -- you also have to have that happen when you're having sex with someone who has something you can catch. And even then, transmission rates aren't 100% for much of anything.

In general, condom "success" rates are predicated on some pretty careless usage; for people who use them carefully, it's much lower.
