A two-year-old girl has been strangled to death in her bed by a pet python which escaped from its cage in the middle of the night.
The eight-foot Burmese python broke out of a terrarium and killed toddler Shaiunna Hare in her bedroom in Florida.
Charles Jason Darnell, the snake's owner and boyfriend of the child's mother, went to the little girl's room when he realised the reptile was missing.
EnlargeStab marks can be seen on the snake's body as police measure it before taking it away after the tragic accident in Florida

Tragic story. There's a recording of the 911 call on that website.

sad story, but im sorry if you have little kids why would you have a pet snake, if i had kids up until the age of about 6 the biggest bet we would have would be a gold fish, or maybe a guinea pig. then we would get a dog

Which is why you shouldn't have animals like that as pets.

Very irresponsible parents. Who the hell keeps a python in the house when they have young children. Guess this idiot has to live with the knowledge that he is responsible for the little girls death. My advise to him would be to keep his distance from the little girls father, because if that was my little girl that your snake strangled I would be out for blood.

Sad, sad story. Who the heck would have a python as a pet though? Irresponsible parents I think. They should've got a gold fish instead, or a harmless pet anyway!

Yeah people have tigers as pets as well, it's all good till something in it's brain clicks, it realises it's a tiger and ****s you up. Snakes are wild animal that do not have any reasoning skills, clearly it saw this girl as fair game and did what pythons do best. The blame doesn't lay with the snake but the owner.
Don't see a problem with people having snakes as pets, just not when they have young children living in the house. The risk is too high to take the chance, a two yr old would not have stood a chance of try to wrestle that thing.
Even dog's should not be allowed near children unsupervised.

your dog could snap and kill you.

Chances of a domesticated dog killing a fully grown man are minimal, a child easily. That has happened quite a often in recent times. Hence I said dogs should not be left unsupervised around children.
Dogs have been domesticated for centuries, also dogs have a pack mentality. If you show dominance in the pack to the dog at an early age the chances of the dog attacking it's master are very slim, this can not be said for snakes.

yeah they can make great pets, when in the hands of a responsible owner.
But let me ask you this Biosonic: You have a 1 yr old son/daughter; are you willing to take the risk of owning such a snake large enough to kill your child?
All it takes is one careless mistake and boom, tragedy in your household. How would you be able to live with yourself knowing you made a terrible choice that cost the life of your offspring.
not trying to be rude or anything, just a "what if" kind of question.
I can say for myself that any offspring i may have in the future, the only kind of pet i will own is either a small dog or turtle.

Sad story, however you have to make sure precautions are met when owning these sort of animals, regardless of how much of an "expert" you think you are in handling it.
"When I was 12, I milked my eel into a pot of turtle stew. I flogged the one-eyed snake, I skinned my sausage. I made the bald man cry into the turtle stew, which I believe my sister ate. At least I hope she did."

As long as your dog is trained, I don't see why they shouldn't be playing with children unsupervised. Sure, if you have a raging pitbull that you keep for your secret dogfighting events (I'm looking at a certain Quarterback right about now...) then it'd be stupid to leave it alone with a kid. But other than that, dogs are the most loving animals as long as you don't mistreat them or anything.
My mum always tells me about how she'd find me in my room wrestling with my rottweiller (sp?) when I was 2-3yrs old. That dog wouldn't hurt a fly, and I'm pretty sure as a little kid I must have bit him or pulled his fur or whatever like you do to every other object around...
Anyhoo, morale of the story is don't let a deadly pet python near your 2yr old.
