Hurrah yet more ammo for "ps3 is sooooo expensive", Cant really see what benifets this player has over the ps3's.
Not that this is really news but its always good to get confirmation; that we are going to be recieve one of the consumers markets biggest ever bargin.

Looking at the titles above...I think we can officially seal Blu-ray's win with hd-dvd
and can call blu-ray the official next-gen format.

It seems like Bluray will be here soon enough, I'm a person that owns well over 1000 original DVD's and I can't wait to get a Bluray player. Matrix 1-3, T2, Reservois Dog, Sleepy Hollow, House of Flying Daggers, Kungfu Hustle, Spiderman and Goodfellas will all get bought on or soon after release.

Bluray has by far the better collection of Movies for a Movie fan.

Off topic, Firefox, I was at the IOW festival on the Isle of Wight and saw Cold Play Live.

They are a great band and live are untouchable.

    Sorry - back on topic.

We are still waiting here in the UK for any info on Blu-ray players

Knowing how Europe is behind in the times, and UK is pretty much more ... advanced in adopting this type of technology PS3 might be the first ever Blu-ray player out to market.

How much are standard DVD movies in CDN anyway?

Oh yeah didn't Blu-ray players get delayed until August?

What's the story with this thing anyway?
    by Kathleen Sanders

June 9, 2006 - Sony's PlayStation 3 has had rough going in the press lately. Earlier this week the PS3 was lovingly defended by developers after being accused of being "hobbled" and "broken."

Today, thegadget weblog Gizmodo caught the fact that the Sony Style webstore stealthfully changed the projected release date of its first Blu-ray player from June 25 to "on or about August 15, 2006."

Tuesday IGN reported that Pioneer announced it was delaying the release of its Blu-ray player until Fall of 2006 citing "a delay in the development process."

Sony's Blu-ray player sure does look shiny.
Although the August 15 date is well before the PlayStation 3's scheduled November 17 launch, these bumps for Blu-ray might make gamers nervous. Is the new format going to be ready in time? Could this portend possible stalls for Sony's next-gen PlayStation 3, which uses Blu-ray as its standard format? Out calls to Sony were not returned. You can bet we're staying on top of this like a pony.

I know the connection to PS3 but wouldn't this be more at home in the Technology forum?
I don't buy Microsoft products because I don't support companies that want to control rather than contribute.

Will these movies be released exclusively in Blu-Ray format? If not they can't really seal any win against HD-DVD.

Quit with the jealousy act eh? Oh, and in response to your final point, yes, with DVD playback quality on the PS2 being far from decent, I'm sure plenty of people have at least one other stand-alone DVD player in their home, especially considering that most families have more than one TV these days too.

I for one will have a separate player to my PS3, but it will be a Blu-ray/HD-DVD combo that also supports SACD and DVD-A.

Well anything Sony or MGM related is obviously not coming to HD-DVD. I'm not sure about the other companies, but there might be a "format war" allegiance chart somewhere online that shows which companies are exclusive to one side or the other. Blu-Ray supposedly has "the majority" of the movie industry's support, while HD-DVD has a smaller percentage that overlaps that.

Blu-ray is looking pretty good at the moment as far as winning the 'format war' goes. I plan to buy a few movies before the PS3 comes out so that when I get it I'll already have a good start and can begin watching movies in HD immediately.

Are those really the launch titles ? It's unbelievable since HD-DVD had like only 5 movies at launch and I'm not sure if they released any other than those ones..

If Sony really wants to win the Movie Format war, they just have to bundle a copy of the Blu-Ray version of Spiderman 2 with the PS3 and Blu-Ray player

Microsoft isnt commited to blu-ray, they are only backing it for the moment. Basically whats going to happen is that a blu-ray disc is only $5 more than the current HD-DVD, sure their player is only $500 compared to the $1000 blu-ray player, but if you wait till november youll only be paying $100 more for a blu-ray player (and then some) than you would a stand alone HD-DVD player.
However, its my belief that some companys already have their hands in the HD-DVD "cookie jar".
Wal-mart is on the top of that list. Blu-Ray discs as well as HD-DVD's went on whole sale at launch, Blu-ray costing $17.99 for old titles and $23.99 for new releases as opposed to the list price of $29.99 and $39.99. Im sure that Hd-dvd went on sale for $5 less than the Blu-rays.
Wal-Mart is selling the HD-DVd's for a price of $23 or so for new realease HD-DVD's (Mark down price) and leaving the Blu-Ray discs at list price. I believe that wal-mart has a share in the HD-DVD stock market and are trying to push them ahead so as to make some money off of the war, which is smart in my opinion, but bad for Blu-Ray.
However, Bestbuy will be selling both formats at the same price, $30.

    HD-DVD IS DEVELOPED BY TOSHIBA!!!!!

Microsoft and Intel are it's major backers!

Movies aren't the only thing that will win the next-gen media format though- from amazon.com, the official Toshiba HD-DVD is only $500, whereas the Sony Blu-Ray is $999. And if the major hardware and software

There have been quite a lot of HD-DVD movies released gradually in the last 2.5 months since launch.

Anyway, titles released this year aren't that useful considering the low amount of purchases that the players will get at launch!

Come Christmas however, if one media has more 'exclusives' than the other, that one will have a healthy advantage.
