    Not again!

My PS3 has just YLoD for the 3rd time!

I only got it back 2 weeks ago from total console repair! (Not good! )

Am I right in thinking YLoD repair (re-flow or whatever they do) is only a temporary fix and will never be a long term fix, therefor just delaying the inevitable?

If anyone can post links to info about this I would be grateful as I am trying for a brand new console on the grounds that I have insurance and a repair is not going to help!

I also took the repair last time, am I within my rights to demand a new console?

    Rep for help/info!

What did you do to it? You must be doing something wrong. I've never cleaned out my ps3 and it got it right after launch in 2006. Are you trying to fry eggs on the vents again?

Wow man, again? Thats extremely terrible luck.

I don't think Sony is tryting for a temporary repair, but no fix lasts forever. But good luck getting them to admit that.

I'm not familiar with the laws in your country though. Can't help ya much

    I had a feeling bacon,eggs and PS3 didn't mix!

Seriously though, only got back 2 weeks ago, Fans weren't even on! and I weren't playing it! It was on the farcry2 home screen while I did the pots! (my turn, so the mrs says everyday!) came back and red light flashing!

Funny enough same thing last time! was on Battlefield home screen, fans not on, went out for a fag ( NO! not that fag! cigarette for US peeps!) come back, YLoD!

(No-one else in the room both times, I already thought that!)

I don't know if most people know that means cigarette.
Anyway, maybe the fan has problems being triggered and the system overheats. Not plausible, but certainly possible.

Yeah but the refurbs are other people's consoles that have been repaired though. Its not just a used console. That ones had a problem before.

Just out of curiosity: Do you typically turn the ps3 off right after (or soon after) playing demanding games?

    /off topic
Sorry to hear about your bad luck, I'd contact where you had the repair done and see what kind of warranty they offer on their work.

So it looks like Sony repair and check them thoroughly!

Total console repair fixed(),tested and sent out all within a few hours!

Was told I would get it back in 5-7 days and could check on website for progress! Rang them at 11am after 10 days because it said on their website that it still hadn't reached them and sent them emails through their site which they did not reply to.
They said it was just being repaired as we speak, then it would be tested, then sent out that afternoon before close (5pm)!

Got it back with a sheet of paper that just said Power Fault!

I used to until (was it you) someone said let it cool down first on Home screen, so that dont work either!

Wouldn't leaving it on home screen cool it quicker though with the fan on rather than just letting it cool naturally?

Either way it didn't make any difference!

Does anyone know if reflow cannot fix it long term?

what do you mean by a reflow??...what exactly did they do to it?...i would personally not trust many people other than Sony with repairs

whether or not a repair can last long term really depends what type of damage was actually done the first time around...i mean if it overheated and was physically damaged in some way...and all the repair company did was open her up, clean it out and replace the thermal paste, then no its not going to work long term...they would need to replace the part that was physically damaged...i've seen HDD's mechanically fail....then put them through a full format...and then they may work for a few weeks (even months, ive seen it) and then just fail again...

it really depends on what was damaged whn it failed the first time...

It just said power fault, which I belive is the thermal paste fix (I thought the reflow was same thing) but maybe not!

What is the fix for power fault because they obviously haven't repaired it properly?

    Another 2 weeks of frustration!

The company is total console repair which are through GAME insurance company Allianz!

Last time GAME offered to take the console themselves, so I will see what they say, but surely after having it repaired and it breaking again I can ask for a new console!

What do you think/ would you do?

to me..."power fault" would mean failure of the consoles power supply....which can not be fixed, but must be replaced...

Well they didn't do a very good job!

The power lights were still on, you can hear it try to start and after 2 seconds the light goes yellow then flashes red!

Would there not even be lights or trying to start if it was power?

not in all cases...ive dealt with plenty of computer power supplies that would spin case fans and light up led lights but didn't have enough juice to actually spin HDD's and boot up the system...

first off i would ask them for more information on exactly what was wrong with the PS3...AND there should be some sort of bill of sale or reciept or some kind that details the work that was done to the console...you paid for a service, it is your right to know what service was done...

Probably wasn't me, but I've always been an advocate of letting systems cool down on the xmb before shutting off completely. Doesn't make sense to ride it hard and put it away sweating if you get what I mean.

How's your power? If it's happened multiple times, you should start thinking of common factors, and the power is one of them. Considering that it was mentioned on the paper you got back with your console, it sorta puts it up as a prime suspect. Are you using a surge protector?

My idea is that if you aren't using a surge protector, the power you're using could be fluctuating. I'm no expert, but I've seen computers encounter trouble after that sorta thing. Could be that the power supplies of your ps3's keep getting blown out. Anyways, just a thought, anyone feel free to correct me if I'm misinforming the man (or woman, for that matter). Either way though, if you aren't using a surge protector, invest my friend!

Oh, and I made this account just to post this reply! Password recovery was down, and I only login when I feel I have something that can actually help someone. Bet you feel special now.

It was on insurance/extended warranty claim and all it says is Fault: Power fault!

    No other details!

Because this is the third time in less than 2 years and already had repair am I entitled to replacement/credit note/refund?

I have a friend who had 3 PS3's fail on him, I'd say to him they must have put X360 parts in there and stuff.

Anyway, sorry to hear this happened to you, that guy Hood also had his die, seems they aren't prone yet.

Maybe the Slim hopefully will rid it.

I would think you would be entitled to a new ps3 with the failure happening so soon after it was returned. Or at the very least yet another fix free of charge.
