A nice article about the promises of Square-Enix, and their actual delivering:
Square Enix on Xbox 360
The two companies have been talking for a long time, but Square Enix continually shuns Microsoft.
It's no secret that Microsoft has done well in the console gaming sector. The company came out strong with the first Xbox and challenged Nintendo for the number two spot. With the Xbox 360, the company has garnered itself a one year head start against competition from Sony and Nintendo, and is looking to make a strong run at holding the number one spot. However, there is one area where Microsoft has been severely lacking and that hasn't changed at all from the Xbox to the Xbox 360. We're talking about Japan and support from Japanese third party companies.
There are a lot of Japanese companies who are offering solid support for the Xbox 360, but there are still several who seem to be hesitant about support. The primary company of focus here is Square Enix. In all honesty, it doesn't matter if Devil May Cry 4 is exclusive to the Xbox 360, or if Microsoft can secure Metal Gear Solid 4 for the 360. The Japanese gaming audience is shifted by two game series: Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. If Microsoft were able to secure an exclusive on a current Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest title within the main series, the announcement alone would move Xbox 360 consoles in Japan.
Microsoft has discussed its relationship with Square Enix in the past, and the two companies are always very positive about working together. However, over the past two years, nothing has really come of these talks other than a lackluster port of a five year old game (Final Fantasy XI). So let's go back for a moment to look at what has been said in the past, then move forward to see where this relationship is really going.
E3 2005
At Microsoft's pre-E3 2005 press conference, Yoichi Wada, President of Square Enix came up on stage and discussed Square's future plans for the Xbox 360. At this point, Final Fantasy XI was officially announced. The audience cheered, but let's face it, porting a five year old game that had already been available for the PC and the PlayStation 2 wasn't going to bring a lot of new Japanese gamers to the Xbox 360.
"Close collaboration between Microsoft and Square Enix is just beginning. As a company that is dedicated to expanding the boundaries of what is possible in the world of video games, Square Enix looks forward to working with the Xbox team to create new worlds that Xbox 360 will make possible. Tonight, I would like to share with you a sneak preview of what we believe the future of video games might look like. We created this real-time rendered image taking advantage of Xbox 360's superb graphics power."
Mr. Wada followed this statement with a video showcasing a new fantasy world that looked like it could potential be from the upcoming MMORPG that the Final Fantasy XI team is currently working on. The video and speech would've been a confidence booster for Xbox 360 loyalists if it weren't for the amazing showing Square Enix put on at the Sony press conference hours before. Instead of an unnamed real-time movie, Square Enix showed off a real-time version of the Final Fantasy VII intro running on PlayStation 3 hardware specs.
Tokyo Game Show 2005
Sony once again showed off the Final Fantasy VII real-time demo for the PlayStation at the 2005 Tokyo Game Show. And while the crowds around the PS3 theater were huge, the crowd for Final Fantasy XI at the Microsoft booth was equally impressive. In fact, the only game at the Microsoft booth that was getting attention was Final Fantasy XI. N3: Ninety-Nine Nights, Chrome Hounds, Enchanted Arms and Dynasty Warriors were all on display and playable, but none of those titles garnered the attention of FFXI.
E3 2006
Square Enix held a press conference on the Monday before E3 2006 began. Going into the press event, we felt sure that Square Enix would show something for the Xbox 360. With all of the talk in the past about Square's support for the 360, we figured this would be the place and time to do it. In fact, we fully expected plenty of PlayStation 3 discussion, and if there was nothing said about the Xbox 360, Microsoft would be in trouble.
"We are deeply impressed by Xbox 360's outstanding features such as HD graphics, network connectivity and personalization. We are also impressed with Microsoft's deep insight into online gaming. So it is a great pleasure for us that the cross-platform concept of our PlayOnline will now be compatible with Xbox Live. Users of Xbox Live can now share with PC users the worlds we've created. This is something we've dreamed about in the past."
That was what Mr. Yoichi Wada said at E3 2005, one year before. At the very least that statement indicates that Square Enix will be porting its next MMORPG to the Xbox 360. While the company was not ready to disclose details about its next MMO, aside from a few comments about the game coming to Windows Vista and PlayStation 3 (nothing about the Xbox 360), there were plenty of announcements made at the press briefing.
To kick off Square's next generation announcements, the company displayed Dragon Quest Swords as a launch title for the Nintendo Wii. This was quite a surprise, and should help Nintendo sell a few Wii consoles in Japan later this year. The Dragon Quest Swords announcement was followed by the announcement of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles for the Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.
At this point we knew more was coming. Square Enix had already announced two Nintendo Wii titles, so PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 news had to be on the way. What followed was virtually a slap in Microsoft's face, and we're not talking about a little French, "I challenge you to a duel" slap. Square Enix went for the Charlie Murphy/Rick James slap and asked Microsoft what the five fingers said to the face.
A trailer for Final Fantasy XIII was shown, followed by text indicating it would be on the PlayStation 3. Square then began talking about exploiting franchises (yes, they said exploit) so we knew more FFXIII was coming. However, the next title shown was Final Fantasy Agito XIII for mobile phones. Okay, we've got a new Final Fantasy for PS3 and now another for mobile, but Square Enix wasn't done yet.
The final game showed in the Final Fantasy announcement montage appeared to be a new CG movie similar to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. However, at the end of the trailer, the same familiar text indicating the console was shown. This time all that was a pause before the name of the console was shown. At this point Square Enix had shown two Wii products, one PlayStation 3 product and new mobile phone game based on the FFXIII universe. This game had to be for the Xbox 360 right? Wrong! After the deliberate pause, PlayStation 3 was displayed on screen.
The Future
As we look ahead, we are still left with the words of Mr. Yoichi Wada. But what exactly does Square Enix have in store for the Xbox 360? At a press briefing held in Japan shortly before E3 2006, Square Enix announced Project Sylph, an arcade-style shooter. Not exactly a game that will be moving consoles in Japan, and certainly no where near as big as two Final Fantasy XIII titles for the PlayStation 3. Tri-Ace, the developer behind the Star Ocean series, is working on an RPG for the Xbox 360, but that's being handled my Microsoft as it seems Square Enix has little to no involvement in the project.
With all of the talk about the PlayOnline service and Xbox Live, one would think that the next MMO from the Final Fantasy XI team would be coming to the Xbox 360. However, reports over the past year have indicated that the game will only be heading to the Vista and PlayStation 3 platforms. We'll have to wait for more details on the title from Square Enix, but a new MMO may not be enough to push consoles in Japan, especially if the title will be available on Windows Vista and the PlayStation 3. For the foreseeable future, it appears as though Microsoft will continue to be shunned by Square Enix.

Good article, I didn't know Square Enix was making a game for the Xbox 360. But it sure is noticable that Microsoft didn't get that Final Fantasy licence!
THat is good I think, for the Playstation 3 of course. Because the Final Fantasy series are already proved to be a succes and without the 360 being sold enough in Japan such a title can't make the console sell a lot more....[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Square Enix said that there are more games planned for the Final Fantasy XIII project, and that they'd announce them for other platforms. Now, that could mean we'll see games in the Final Fantasy XIII universe, or it could mean we'll see them on the Wii. Considering the graphics horsepower of the 360 in relation to the Wii I'd like to think they'll be coming to the 360.

Currently playing? Skyrim (360). White Knight Chronicles (PS3). Majoras Mask (Wii). Final Fanasy VII (PS2). Just completed? Final Fantasy VI.

Again with the flame bait, please don't make me report you CG

Anyway, I for one WANT Microsoft to get SquareEnix support, I think creating a way for Live players and PS3 players (a pipedream I know
) to hang together on the internet would be awesome...
Perhaps MS will gain a quirky little title like "Brave Fencer Mushashi"

Final Fantasy Versus XIII will definitely not be sub par. It's by Nomura, the writer of FFVII and director of Kingdom Hearts games.

And one sure-to-be-great game still coming, Valkyrie Profile 2.
Hmmm... I remember reading that some Final Fantasy game had 1 and a half hours of FMV. If you want to complete the games 100%, FFX took well over 100 hours. I don't think 50 hours of that was FMVs, or even talking. Most of the time you're fighting enemies.half the FF games are CGIS any ways

06-15-2006 #12Most of those games you mentioned are outsourced. Grandia 3 came from Game Arts, Radiata Stories and Valkryie Profile 2 come from Tri Ace. Dragon Quest VIII comes from Level 5. Only the Kingdom Hearts games and Front Mission 5 come from the original Square. Indeed, the teams within the Square of Square Enix have been pretty much sitting on their bottoms all generation long.

Tri-Ace is a part of Enix, always has been. Enix and Square-soft over their many decades of service to the gaming industry got way too large to have just 1 squad so they built tons of internal studios. Like Sony has Naughty Dog and Incognito and Polyphony, Enix has Tri-Ace and Square has(had) Dream Factory and other studios.
But I'm glad Square and Enix aren't throwing crap into the wind. But Enix has made some gems that people have overlooked. Like Robot Alchemic Drive for the PS2. Only released 50,000 copies but man, what a game that is. Best mech fighting game EVA.
DQVIII, engine built by Level 5 but everything else done by Enix of course. FFX and X-2 were actually real high quality, but X-2 was too much like a rehashing of the same engine and locations with nothing but a different storyline, few new characters and a different battle engine.
FFXII got a 40/40 from Famitsu, that coveted number only 7 other games has hit. Valkrie Profile 2 looks trully amazing. Radiata Stories and Grandia. List goes on for Enix and Square this generation. And unlike in the past, almost all the games have been pretty damn good.__________________________________________________ _____________________________

06-16-2006 #15Well if that is the case then why does the copyright on their website say Tri Ace and not Square Enix? http://www.tri-ace.com/ Scroll down to the bottom of the page.Tri-Ace is a part of Enix, always has been.
Square Enix doesn't own Game Arts as far as I know, they are still independent, and so is Tri Ace. In fact, it was mentioned in the very source from this thread that MS is publishing Tri Ace's 360 rpg and not Square Enix, though Square Enix is publishing Game Arts Project Slyph.
And I agree with WhatRuOn. The merger with Enix has really hampered the kinds of games that made Squaresoft a rockstar of game development last gen. Square used to far and away be my favorite game developer, right now, I don't know who I'd consider my favorite game developer (Nautilus ranks pretty high up there, and if Final Fantasy XII turns out to be as great a game as it could be, Square will have regained some of my favor).
But really though, you can't even compare this generation's (Square) Enix rpgs with Squaresoft's of last generation. During the PS1, we got three Final Fantasies, a Chrono Cross, a Xenogears, a Vagrant Story, Final Fantasy Tactics, and a Saga Frontier (a favorite of mine), all of which were gold. This gen from Square we get, what, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, Unlimited Saga, Romancing Saga, is that it? That hardly compares with last gen's best from the house that Final Fantasy built.
Currently playing? Skyrim (360). White Knight Chronicles (PS3). Majoras Mask (Wii). Final Fanasy VII (PS2). Just completed? Final Fantasy VI.

06-17-2006 #25You are not kidding I was in RPG heaven on the PS1. Square could just do no wrong on the PS1 and it was great. You can't really argue against that point because of the three real Final Fantasy games alone. Not to mention the laundry list of other games you mention. That Vagrant Story was my favorite it was simply awesome. It just seems like after the Final Fantasy movie bust thing that Square just stop putting out as many games, at least to me. I hope they go back to the old ways with next gen consoles.

XBox 360: WTF it's broke again!
Wii: Still can't find the SOB.
