    Shigeru Miyamoto Interview (Mario Creator)

A new article from Mario creator

In a recent interview with CNN Money, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto touched up on Nintendo's stance in the upcoming console wars. He reiterated Nintendo's distinctive approach to next-generation warfare; an approach which places Nintendo not above or below the competition, but to the side of it. Miyamoto claims there's just not much to interest gamers nowadays. And this is true of himself as well.

There's not a lot I want to play now," Miyamoto said. "A lot of the games out there are just too long. Of course, there are games, such as Halo or Grand Theft Auto, that are big and expansive. But if you're not interested in spending that time with them, you're not going to play."

Miyamoto says he misses simple games you can pick up and play without a deep time investment. He went on to say this type of gaming is precisely what Nintendo plans to achieve with the Nintendo Revolution, the upcoming successor to the Nintendo GameCube. While company representatives have stated on numerous occasions that an over-reliance on technology is leading the games industry to the dark side, the Revolution won't shy away from pretty graphics.

"The Revolution will use cutting edge technology, but it's ultimately about how that technology is used," he said. "We asked ourselves 'why would a family need or want to have a gaming console?' The answer is what's driving development of the Revolution."

"Rather than thinking we have a new console, let's make epic games, I want [developers] to make more unique products," he said.

Finally, on the subject of Sony's and Microsoft's E3 conferences, Miyamoto reminded everyone both companies were merely showing rendered movies and not real games. The real test, he argues, is not how much technology you have but how you use it.

"Most of what you're seeing are not even the first projections of games," Miyamoto said. "They're just shiny computer graphics. They're things anyone using a computer can do. ... It's how we're going to use the technology that separates us. What we want to do is different - and we're happy with the road we're taking. When you have a Revolution, you're not going to have the same experience as you would with the other home consoles."
