You see more small cars in the UK because their prices of buying and owning a car makes anything larger unafordable to the majority of Brits.

If you do the money conversion, a base model Ford Fiesta costs almost $15,000 in the UK. For the price of a base model British Ford Focus you could buy an American Ford Mustang or Fusion. Toss a few options on the UK Focus and it would equal a new US Taurus in price.

And then there is the insurance and annual taxes, parking, etc... I honestly don't know how the majority of Brits can afford to drive.




Close to the same size, but no where near the same power, nor the same gas milage.

Strange that Ford somehow manages to get about 130 more horsepower, 160ft lbs more torque, and 2MPG better gas milage from a smaller V6.

On the other hand, I find it interesting how many Europeans can afford entry level luxury cars like a bmw 3 series, Audi a4 and Mercedes c class.

And you do have to admit, there are a lot of European manufacturers if small cars that don't sell their vehicles in the US.

The ford benefits from turbocharging, it's as simple as that. What is more interesting is how their 3.7L NA 6 cylinder is significantly more powerful than the 4.0 6 cylinder in the tacoma.

That's actually easy to explain. Those cars are the same price in Europe and the US, so with the much more expensive lower class cars it's not nearly as much of a leap to move into the low level BMW/Audi/Mercedes.

I mean, in the UK a VW Golf R costs as much as an Infiniti G37 does here. Basically the same price as an entry level BMW. The BMW/Audi/Mercedes aren't as expensive as they are here when compared to everything else.

Sure there are. Safety, reliability, and emissions are the major reasons why. The EU diesels in particular are made to run off 50ppm sulfur diesel, and US has mandated a maximum of just 15ppm since 2006. Many of the smaller EU cars would never pass US crash test requirements either (They are allowed to have flimsy, flexible plastic windows for instance). The Fiat 500 had to have the chassis modified before it could pass US crash tests, and despite earning a 5 star safety rating in the EU, even after chassis modification it only managed 2 stars for the side impact on US NHTSA tests.

It's a Ford Duratec 35 engine with a turbocharger, but even in non-turbo form the Duratec 3.5L V6 is producing as much as 290hp in the Explorer.

But yes, the Duratec 37 that's found in the Mustang is one hell of an engine. With nothing more than a custom tune and CAF I've seen them pushing 340hp.

I think (and I mean think, this is just what I've come up with), that may be because America has bigger cars in general, whereas we have smaller cars. So in America a big car colliding with a smaller car will do more damage. Whereas we have smaller cars in general so it's more likely to be smaller cars colliding with smaller cars.
