Apple qualifies Retina screens at the point where the PPI is high enough for the human retina not to be able to see the individual pixels. That's different on all screens. On a 13" a an 11" screen they would presumably double the resolution of their current resolutions. (Keep in mind that the 13" Air has a higher resolution than the 13" MBP.)
The point of the retina screen isn't to give you more screen space it is to give you a higher density. You can run the retina MBP at full resolution but it isn't a desirable environment to work in.
I think they'll make the Air retina as soon as they can. As I've previously stated, I don't expect the 13" MBP to survive when that happens. In fact, I think what Apple will do is to bring together all MacBook's to look as the MBA's and have the same design principles at that point, whenever that may be, they'll all be called MacBook's.
Then they'd have a 11", 13" and 15" MB's in different configurations (two for each). That seems to fit their culture of simplicity.

Right, but I'm assuming the ppi for laptops should be fairly similar since they are used at the same distance. (and a retina mbp 13 would have 226ppi if they did it the same way as the 15)
While technology is improving in its efficiency, I don' think we will be able to cram the equivalent level of technology in the 15 mbp R today in a mba form factor for several years. (5 at the minimum)
Not to mention that the mba form factor has inherent compromises in port selection among other things.

It'll be a little higher since they, presumably, would base a retina screen on the 13" MBA display at 1440 x 900 instead of the 13" MBP at 1280x800.
I don't think they necessarily want to make the MBA's as powerful as the 15" retina MBP. They are probably happy with letting the MBA remain as it is with a retina display and letting the 15" machines being the most powerful machines for users needing a dedicated graphic card and more storage. The price point of the MBA's is probably just where Apple wants them. They wouldn't add hardware that would skyrocket the price.
For most use cases, the MBA's are good enough and with a retina display even more power users would switch.

Sweet. Don't think I'll switch from Downcast though.

Well that’s pretty interesting. Yeah, I use and _love_ Downcast too (just using this morning). Apple is also adding an Instapaper like features in iOS 6 (for offline reading). I think in general the 3rd party products are way more feature rich and the developers more agile in terms of updates, but Apple products can provide some nice integration into the OS.

My take is that Apple makes software for the average user while people like us (that would read and post in a thread like this, for example) need tools for power users. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion. It's nice to have options.

Speaking of "average Joes”
My folks are going to get an iMac, probably the ~22” entry level model. They were considering a notebook, but they’re not going to move the machine around the house and they really like a larger display (and they don’t need to go the whole route of notebook+display+KB+mouse)
I know the update could possibly be around the corner, but the current machine will be +plenty+ for them. They’re still baffled about there not being any “box”

Yeah, there isn't much reason to wait. Nobody seems to know when the iMac update is coming anyway. Better to just get one if you need one. The current iMac's are still good machines too.

Yeah, I even suggested a refurb since the ’11 model is about the same and $200 cheaper, but they’ve never had a brand, spanking new machine, so they’re excited. Plus I’m thinking if they order it, suggesting 8GB RAM, the upgrade at Apple.com is only (er, “only” I suppose
) $100.

I usually order refurbs if they have them in stock. It saves money and I know they have gone through an added layer of scrutiny before being sold. I think it makes it more unlikely to get a lemon.. I could be wrong, though.
My iMac from last year runs very smooth. I did put 16GB of RAM in mine, though... Mainly because I ordered 8GB of RAM for a MBP and for some reason the laptop came with 8GB already installed (I guess it was another benefit of buying a refurb).
Anyway, I am sure they will be happy with it. I think I mentioned it before, but I prefer having the added computer over just a display. I can always use it as a display for a MBP when I want, but it rarely comes up unless I want to use the Win7 I have installed on the laptop with a bigger screen.

I've noticed the retina display MBP can't be user upgraded.. Are the regular 15'' MBP built the same way or could I upgrade the memory and HDD later on myself?
Also, I doubt the upcoming iMac will have a retina display. I can't imagine what kind of resolution the 27'' iMac will end up with if it does!!!When the Bogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.

Is it normal for a MBP (2011) to get hot? i went on minecraft to play but after a few seconds it was hot so i turned it off
-

The MBPs do get hot, but the computer can run fine even at 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Your lap may not like that, however. You can always expect the older gen MBPs to get hot during gaming. The only new advancement in cooling from Apple is the new Retina books. They stay much cooler than any previous gen Apple laptop... even during gaming. Mine needs to freaking ship already.

So, is Apple going to put out a 7 to 8 inch iPad? I remember rumors from a couple years ago, but it seems to be more likely now.
I think it will happen, but I have no interest in one.

Kind of off topic, OK, I’m connecting it to an iPhone, there

(mostly for UofMT)

Love ‘em so far. Not the freakishly huge soundstage of the AD700, but more intimate, more complex mids, the 80i had some very punchy lows too.
I ran them from my 4S, but I also have a Yamaha V870 just sitting around, so I connected the iPhone to the amp, headphones to the amp, wow, got some really sonic extremes, Tool sounded _amazing_.
Note the box indicates SR80i even though the phones show 80 (the 80i cans are much thicker so it’s pretty conspicuous)"Remember, you're young only once but you can be immature forever."

I am not sure that the 80is actually show anything other than 80 on the cans. Have you looked at any of the unboxing videos?
I am not surprised by your response. Grados are known for sounding great with most rock. The SR60s were my first pair of "real" headphones and they still get used quite a bit for travel or when I am lounging out back. They have a specific sound signature that makes them fun to listen to and when my SR60s eventually wear out (I put them through hell), I will definitely get another pair of Grados. Like most headphones, they sound better when amped, but they also sound pretty darn good plugged right into an iPhone or other DAP.
Anyway, glad to hear that you like them! They are definitely a departure from the sound signature of the AD700s.

The new screen is for productivity, not gaming.

There's an awful lot of smoke for there not to be a fire. That's for sure.
The assumption being resolution for games will be static for eternity?
FYI, 1080p is not a resoultion. The P stands for Progressive and is way to distinguish how the image on the display is rendered. It has nothing to do with the resolution of a screen. 1080p in HDTV context refers to a screen with a resolution of 1920x1080 and that renders the image progressively.
You can do a lot of things with the new Retina screen that was impossible before, you can edit full HD video and still have plenty of screen space left for controls for example. The same goes for (very) high resolution images. It's actually a very powerful tool.Other opinions are available.

My friends who are professional photographers, videographers, in the design, print industry are thrilled with the new resolution and how it will enhance their productivity. It’s also a huge benefit for myself and my development partners who are using the iPad sim in Xcode that will now run at full resolution, full screen, for iPad1/2 and now iPad 3, and allow a large pallet of development tools.
While it may not be immediately obvious to consumer markets, in the professional sector, it’s already making a big difference."Remember, you're young only once but you can be immature forever."
