You'll need to be rooting your phone, then installing a custom ROM. I have done this with my Galaxy 3 i5800, and i must say the battery is far better than the standard firmware from Samsung. Go to xda-developers and look for your phone, sure you'll find a ROM to install, and its not rocket science!

Pokemon, oh yes. However, the emulators have gone from the Android Market for some reason so you'll have to find another way to download it, which shouldn't be too hard.

I've never been big into rooting my phone...looked at doing it when I first got my Optimus S from Sprint back in January...but they patched the hole that was used to do the Z4Root ..so I didn't bother.

A couple of days ago, Sprint forced all Optimus users to update to the new Gingerbread 2.3.3 update..

and OMG..all hell broke loose on my phone. It froze constantly, rebooted itself..just non-stop problems..

SO I just rooted it, and I am now running CM7 with XioniaRedux kernel..and Xionia recovery...

    MUCH BETTER!!!

    Plus the goodies of overclocking!!!!

    MIUI. XD
A lot of people just discard it as being an iOS look-a-like but it's far from it. One of the deepest ROMs out there. I'm not a huge Sense fan, so I tend to go AOSP. The only other option I'd consider is CM7. SBC kernel with some ViperMOD undervolting to squeeze out every bit of battery life I can.

    In what ways? Stability?

I've seen countless custom ROMs that are more stable / feature-filled than stock ROMs. Sometimes even more optimized. Granted, you have some of these new Sense ROMs that are being ported to older devices that may not be entirely stable, but that's to be expected (using Sense as an example). Or even porting foreign ROMs onto a non-native device. Stock ROMs are notorious for being filled with small bugs / issues.

I haven't seen a stock ROM that couldn't be switched out for a better option. The new Sense is cool and all, and some people are into it, but seeing an Evo 3D running stock and - for example, AOSP - is a night and day difference in terms of performance and stability (to a certain extent).

Obviously depends how much time and work has been put into the ROM, as well.

I just bought the Motorola Photon. Pretty cool phone. Comes with 2.3.4 OS. Just rooted it last night but I do not think I will put a custom rom on the phone. Everything seems to work great the way it is.

Yeah I know a couple people with the Photon that are, for the time being, sticking with the stock setup apart from root. Webtop was pretty sweet from what I had seen. People very pleased with the phone, especially once they switch out the launcher. Haven't seen any news on the matter but I heard the dev community was taking a while to grow. Here's to hoping that changes, or has changed.

Anyone thinking of buying a new phone shouldn't do so right now and should wait for the Nexus Prime to come out.. that will be a beast! Plus it's vanilla android.

Ya the webdock is pretty impressive. I like how you can use it remotely. The community is pretty dead on XDA but I think I played with my Vibrant so much that I do not care to put any custom roms on this one. Becomes a headache updating so much or having something not work properly.

I finally had to root my Optimus s. I am rooted and running cyanogen..very happy so far. I should mention that it is sprint's fault I had to root.... They sent the gingerbread update and it had ruined my phone.. Lots of people are complaining on sprint site too.

have you read the (rumoured) galaxy S3 specs...? i'd say they are entirely feasible. So anybody with a contract due up in the next six months or so, skip the prime and direct your eyes to barcelona...

well, i'm running kf3 on my gs2, rooted, and i've yet to find a rom thats as smooth for a start...or indeed as stable, battery life too is good on this firmware, i'm getting two days with medium usage. i travel for four hours a day so web/video's/music get used during those times...no more custom roms for me...they are good n all but none come close to a good stock rom...some may have 'additional features' but ive never encountered a custom rom that performs perfectly without some sort of $#@! up, either to battery life or another function of the phone. I don't know about the evo 3D, it was never an option to me. I'm loving samsungs hardware and design atm, and i can't see another manufacturer stealing my custom away from them for a long time.

Yeah, fair enough. I guess I shouldn't say that all custom ROMs are inferior as that obviously wouldn't be true. I'd like to be able to sit on a stock ROM, or even just a single custom one for a while. Have a habit of wanting to check everything out ... can never settle.

Yeah, that is definitely some cool stuff. Understood about updating / keeping up / flashing whatever hot new badassery is out. It does get a little tiresome. Try to settle for a week, then jump right back in. That's kind of why I'm holding out for Nexus Prime news; give me some root and stock. Or maybe CM( 8 ) when it catches up with ICS and adds all its little tricks and additions.

^^ fair enough mate...i'm forever reading custom rom threads from start to finish so i can see what the general consensus is...won't be flashing anymore roms now. Infact, i'll only be flashing official roms after my flashing of 13 roms lol. will flash my kernal back to official kf3 when 2.3.4. is released...even that will be after i've read users reports on it...

Edit: went mental and installed 2.3.5. So far everythings great...could be arsed waiting anymore.

no SD card slot on the new Galaxy Nexus (Nexus Prime sounded so much better imho)...
Comeon Samsung/Google. That's a big part as to why I DIDN't buy the Nexus S.
    WHY!?!?!?! =(

Loving the HD screen and A4.0. Just hate not having removable/expandable storage.

PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....

That might be the one phone that will keep me from going Win Mo 7 or iPhone. I really like Vanilla Android over ANY ROM or modified carrier OS. My Nexus 1 was the best phone I ever had, beat the heck out of my iPhone, would have kept it if I didn't switch over to Verizon. Now that they have a Nexus phone coming out, I very well might stay with Android!
