C'mon now..... All I have been hearing lately is the news about Sony posting a job listing for some people to help them with "realizing the future of Wipeout on PSP and PS3". Along with the news comes constant bashing of the PS2 installment Wipeout Fusion, and praise and worship of Wipeout Pure for PSP.
Hold on a second. You like the PSP Wipeout, and NOT the PS2 version? What is the PSP version doing that the PS2 version didn't? Downloadables and online racing. Wow. That's TOTALLY a reason to claim a night and day difference between the quality of a near exact replica of a previous game...
Wipeout Fusion had long, awesome, fun tracks. It had a small but fitting selection of ships. It had challenging AI to race against. It had alternate modes to play tracks on, meaning you could play a track 3 different ways, plus all of those ways backwards as well. Customizing your ship slowly changed it's physical appearance. There was slight damage shown to your ship when it got really banged up. The physics were better than they have ever been. It supported widescreen. The soundtrack was one of the best I have heard on any console game without having to set up a custom soundtrack from MP3's.
What did Wipeout Pure bring to the table? Online? Hardly. Honestly, who plays Wipeout Pure online? Not me. I can't even find anyone to play. Downloadable tracks/ships? Yeah, let's download classic stuff instead of making completely new tracks. Sure, there were ships, but it seems cheesy without the ability to customize your ship and deck it out like on Fusion so you can see what it evolves into. Good tracks? Short and uneventful. Not as interesting and engaging as in Fusion.
In short, I don't see a whole lot of reason why Pure is so much better than Fusion. The number of things Pure lacked far outweighs the online features that Fusion didn't have. Compared to all of the other Wipeout games, Fusion was pretty awesome, and delivered on what the series had already promised. Does anyone else share this opinion? Is Fusion really a piece of cow dung that somehow did not look/play/feel any better than the Wipeout games on PS1? Someone enlighten me.

Wipeout on PSP isnt like Syphon filter, its limited to AD Hoc, so unless your next door neighbor goes on exactly at the same time, you wont find anyone. The PS2 wipeout was way too hard for me, I always blew up, so it was boring.
During E3 I check out the booth babes, and if that's wrong...then maybe I'm missing the point of E3

For me it was the best Wipeout ever on par with Wipeout XL 2097.
I completed the game 100% and sometimes i still play the game for fun.
The latest aquisition is Wipeout Pure and i keep drooling over the next gen wipeout (already official)

In my opinion i REALLY don't see why that game was so slated. I thoroughly enjoyed it and, for it's time, it was one of the best racing games out in terms of pure speed and fun.
I've tried and tried to get 100% on the damn thing tho ... managed to do everything but the time trial on the flying brick. Stupid thing.

I think that the reason is the same as it was with DMC and the "god awful" sequel DMC2.
Wipeout 3 was as good as Wipeouts get, Wipeout Fusion wasn't as good as Wip3out and it was the first Wipeout for PS2, so everybody expected it to be a totally awesome and new next gen experience. Because it's not as good as the third one -> it's crap amongst Wipeout fans, although the game itself was good, it just was a victim of hype and earlier games in the series.
