    Ps3 died playing MW2

My launch model refurb switched itself off and flashing red lights, the disk was stuck in. Rang sony £128 to get it fixed and up to 6 weeks to get disk back so I took it apart myself and got disk out. There was a load of dust in there but over the last few days since our electric went off suddenly Ive noticed sound etc cutting out in fifa, dont know if this was anything to do with it.

Now Im still getting red flashes but the power switch wont come on when I touch it, have press eject button to get it to do the flashing red. Does anyone know anywhere cheap to get it fixed, dont want to have to pay £128, just bought a new 42" 1080p Toshiba yesterday and now this happens. Sucks.

    Glad to hear.
I'm like you, I'm not paying Sony 150.00 plus to fix mine. So I'm keeping it around for spare parts. My son and grandson have a ps3 phat. My kids let it slip that I'll be getting a slim for Christmas.

Be warned, the fix, 99% of the time is only temporary. In the long run you'll be better off buying another.

When I rang he said he could do a £20 temporary fix, heating something it involved or for £40 he could do a permanent fix so Im going do the permanent one. Maybe sell it to my brother for cheap and buy a new model would be best thing to do.

A permenant fix eh! Give that mans name to Sony, they would employ him in a second.

The £20 fix is called reflowing, you take a heatgun ( 700c ) and center it over the GPU and CPU for about 3 minutes, you then replace the thermal compound on both, rebuild and pray it lasts.

oh and there is no permenant fix

Mine did this last Wednesday playing MW2 also. I too had a 60gig that i bought at launch. My game is also stuck inside but i haven't attempted to get it out.

In Australia Sony charge $250 to fix the console and will cover the repairs for 3 months. Instead I bought myself a 250gig Slim last night for $600 along with a 40 inch Samsung LED TV

That is bad news man. Good luck I hope the fix works for you, but as said before there is no permanent fix. Just out of curiosity you should ask the guy what he does for the temp and perm fixes and post it up to us, that should be interesting.

You can permanently fix it if it's just the bluray drive, because you just replace the drive. But from your description it sounds like the power going out caused a short and screwed up your ps3, you don't use a surge protector do you?
I will say what needs to be said and take whatever consequences that carries.

Update, got the ps3 back today and its working again, cost me £20. He done the heating thing to fix it. For £40 he said he would fix it indefinately as many times as it breaks, dont really have much confidence that it will stay fixed, probably best trading it in. If it breaks again ill get him to do another £20 job and bring it trade to CEX.

Its not mw2's fault. It happens to be that you were playing mw2 that's why your blaming mw2 for it. Please don't blame mw2 because if they knew that it can destroy a ps3 they wouldn't be selling it right now. Thx.

From what I understand Infinity Ward already released a patch for the problem.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but my ps3 also died a couple of nights ago. It's a 40gb model and it wouldn't read any disks (games/CD/DVD).
About a year ago the same thing happened my mate and he rang sony (out of warranty), and they replaced it with a new ps3.

I'm also out of warranty, so rang today and wasn't given that option, instead I was quoted £90 to get it fixed and a turnaround of 21 days

I have removed the warranty sticker btw. When I asked the guy at sony what was to stop me fixing it myself, he said that it doesn't matter as I was out of waranty anyway.

When sony do fix it, do they include a warranty of a year on it again? Beacuse I'm thinking that might make it worth the money. Or should I just take it to an independent repair man?

After they fixed your ps3 they don't include a warranty of a year on it again.

If you go to a repair man you can't guarantee that the problem will never come back again. On the other hand you can guarantee from Sony that your problem will get fixed and you will never face that problem again.

    Hope that helps.

Surely sony can't 'guarantee' that the problem won't arise again? Why would it have done so in the first place if they could?

But guess you would run that risk from an independant repair man.

    Cheers

We should start a poll to see how many have played MW2 on a lauch model and havent had it die. I'd be willing to bet most have died. MW2 killed my launch 60 gb.
