Any advice on how I should handle my new computer I bought would be cool. It's a EMachine. (I know I heard they're crap but I got the whole unit for 400 bucks) Plus it runs really nicely.
Should I turn it off every night or keep it on?
How much does Microsoft Office cost?

07-10-2006 #7No, get Avast! AntiVirus. It's free and does a better job than Norton, IMO.

Avast! is THE best Anti-Virus scanner out there, for sure! I love that pretty little blue icon in my icon tray that spins whenever I do anything (meaning that it's scanning the file)

Don't forget to get "Windows Defender" (For free) to keep your computer clean of Ad-wares and Spy-wares.
Other than that... Let's see... Get some Windows Power Toys (No, they're not for shoving into the holes of your PC... Don't get dirty thoughts like that!), especially the Task Switch power toy ^_~.
Uh, anything else... Lets see... Oh, get Reg Scrub XP, a free Registry cleaner for Windows XP. Also get Firefox, seems like everyone is crazy about it right now. [spoiler:cd0cd2de93]Despite the fact that it sucks :P.[/spoiler:cd0cd2de93]
There's a few tweakings you should do, such as turning your Theme "Appearances" to Maximize Performance (Unless you have a custom theme), turn off Indexing of files and turn off compressions for your main drive (with your Windows installation) if you have multiple partitions.
There's more, but that's all the tweaks I can think of off of the top of my head for now. I will post more as I think of more

Use Windows Defender, Avast & Regscrub XP, as well as Defrag to schedule weekly scans/updates/cleans.
This helps preven your system degrading to a state where it needs 6 to 7 hours of maintenance on it.
Weekly maintence is easy with Windows Scheduled tasks & the programs own scheduled services, just schedule them at say 1am on a Sunday & let it all run at night while you are asleep.

My aunt has a Emachine. It's alright, but I don't use it much.
-
07-10-2006 #17All i know is windows spyware protecter but mines just a beta, is the full version free also? It's now called Windows Defender .
I HAD that and point there is HAD because its not great at all, if you like to play games online with pc half of them it blocks and the rest it slows the heck down, plus for some reason it needs to update like every so many hours.Be sure to get Nortons AntiVirus 2006.

So eventually we took off the computer cover and just left it off and it never went out again, and it stopped overheating also.

Is that better then Nortons AntiVirus 2006? I know 2005 was horrible, but 2006 is very good in my opinion.

Stop trying to demonize Bill Gates and say that he does this and does that and is pulling all the strings behind MS, because he isn't. Just another idiot hopping on the 'Bill Gates is the devil' bandwagon.

A question, does dust really interfere with the performance of the PC? So if I clean the dust of the CPU would it work even an ounce better?

Dust can be a PC killer because a lot of it can prevent proper air flow and heat dissipation. Removing dust won't give you a performance increase, but it will keep your computer from overheating and possibly dying.

07-10-2006 #25yeah, every month or two i open up my PC and vacuum in there a bit, its surprising how MUCH can get in there!
