OU professor submerses laptop in liquid nitrogen, smashes it to prove a point (video)

Hey, students -- pay attention. Not to us, mind you, but to the syllabus provided by your professor. Kieran Mullen, a physics professor at the University of Oklahoma, has a fairly strict rule about gadgets in class: there won't be any, ever, under any circumstances. Balk all you want (understandable given his own clipped-on cellie), but if you sign up for this guy's class, you'll be flipping your phone to "off" and leaving your laptop in the dormitory. And if you try to blaze your own path and slip that netbook into the back row, you might leave bitterly disappointed. As you'll see clearly in the video past the break, Mr. Mullen sought to make a visual point that laptops weren't allowed in class (he calls them "a distraction"), and while it seems that the whole stunt was premeditated, most students acknowledged that his point was driven home. In short, he took a defunct machine, submerged it in liquid nitrogen, and proceeded to make the following statement:
"This is just liquid nitrogen, so it alone won't hurt the computer. But this will."
Find out exactly what "this" was by hitting that 'Read More' button there on the lower left.

    [Thanks, studentatOU]

You know, if I was paying for an OU education, I'd follow the rules anyways. That's a good college.

Betcha he didn't actually do that to a students notebook, and it was just an old busted notebook to prove a point.

Edit: Just watched it on youtube and saw the notes on the video.

In an effort to make a point, a professor freezes a student's laptop with liquid nitrogen then smashes it. NOTE: THIS WAS STAGED! the laptop was not functional at the time.

Meh... presumably, it's a science class, so he gets to do a little experiment for the class and prove a point at the same time, kind of cool if you ask me.

Would have been nice to actually see the laptop shatter rather than staring at the corner of a desk. =/

Yeah, that's my only real complaint. Nice to see a teach though that is passionate about what he does.

From my experience, only about 10% of people who bring laptops actually use them for notes. The other 90% play games, work on homework from different classes or chat.

lol, exactly, i dont learn anything from lectures at Purdue, I learn so much more from Recitation and just looking at the book.
Its also funny when teachers in my engineering class say please close your laptops as they are staring at people who just ignore them.

if that happened to me, I'd make sure he'd be turned into liquid nitrogen..but it was STAGED apparently..otherwise, they have no legal right to destroy personal property because then it would be legal to destroy the professor with bare hands
