Check out this demonstration of someone playing a baseball game in Wii Sports, the game utilizes the Wiimote in order to replicate a swing of the bat. First you will see the guy in the video using the Wiimote like it was a REAL bat, and then later on you will see him giving it a quick flick of the wrist which appears to produce a fairly similar result.
Video
Nintendo said that even though you will be requiring some body movements, even a small flick of the wrist can get the job done too, so you don't need to go jumping over couches and cartwheeling like all the demos would have you believe. It does add some fun to the game (practice golf swing or baseball swing or tennis swing) but if you do get tired you can just sit back down and just use your wrist. Obviously for games that you want to play for a long time you don't wanna be up there for 4 hours at a time.

The only thing I could be worried about with the wiimote is people getting tried to do some of these things thats it. The video was awesome I still want to get this system for my birthday.

This video confirmed two concerns for me;
1. You do not need to stand for 4 hours to play this game, it will not tire one out.
2. Response time is awesome, looks better than some videos of the Wii I seen.My Setup | Youtube Videos

This looks great, and indeed, I was a bit worried about response time, but not anymore.

To me this looks like it could become quite repetitive

Nice demonstration although baseball is not my type of game. Nintendo must have known that if they would only let people use the Wiimote by producing heavy body movement it would not make it very popular amongst all gamers. That's why I'm not really all that worried about it.

Haha, awesome video find man. Too bad the guy can not figure out that he is swinging late and that is why he can not hit a single ball fair! The response time is right on and the system has not even been "finalized" totally yet. Well at least Nintendo has not wanted to come out and say everything about the power of the system since they are not pushing the "power" envelope like Sony and Microsoft is. Having said that, I can not wait for the Wei to release and hopefully I can get this system at launch, and I hope that Wii Sports is bundled in with the system as a teaching game for the Wii.

I dont like the wii-mote for fps because its gonna be so easy to get a good clear headshot everytime its not going to be any challenge, otherwise it looks pretty sweet.

07-24-2006 #12The Red Steel developers said that since the accuracy is so good, they're ramping up the difficulty level and making the AI smarter (using cover constantly, flipping over tables, being more accurate, etc).

Its not really that it's easier, it's more of how horrible current controllers are for fps. Like i've said numerous times there are very few serious fps players who use controllers. I do not know if the wii controller will rival a mouse (my guess is no) but it will at least be better than what we have now.
I miss my dreamcast.

I feel it will be the happy medium between the mouse and the control pad. It wont rival the mouse but for newcomers it might let people feel more in control. I cant use analog sticks to play FPS's with, I find it horrible as i dont feel in control enough, i always seem to be flicking the stick ever so slightly back and forwards to get the crosshair where i want them to be.
The keyboard and mouse is unrivaled in accuracy and function, but it does have a complication that limits the new user from picking up and enjoying. Ive grown up playing FPS's since Doom came out. For that you used just a keyboard. It took me a while to get used to the mouselook of quake (I know had it but you didnt need it). Now there are more buttons than ever before, jump, crouch, run, use. These buttons a re now instinct and i when i first get a game i have to sit programming everything to the keymap my fingers have got used to. My dad saw me playing CSS one day and asked to have a go, he could walk and aim fine (after a few rounds) but the rest of the keys confused him. It is only by years of paying and training my fingers do i know where the keys are without looking. This is where the Wiimote may make this connection.
The Wiimote and nunchuck will explain themselves. Joysticks have been around since ever so everyone knows how they work, push forward and the character goes forward, left he strafes left. This is a much more simple approach to a beginner than WASD. Jump, just flick the nunchuck up, instead of hunting for the right key. Crouch, same as before but down. The Wiimote will be the same, it looks and holds like a gun. Point it where you want to shoot, simple, pull the trigger to shoot, just like a real gun. It seems very intuitive and simple to pick up. I could hand it to my dad and he can be shooting Nazis in seconds, with very little explaination of what each thing does.
Nintendos new controller will make playing FPS's on a console more comfortable. I dont know about you but having my hands cramped round a controller for a few hours makes them ache, on a PC my back starts aching after a long session. With the Wiimote you can sit back in a relaxed position with your hands where you want them and play. I know the PS3 is gonna support keyboard and mouse but will it really be comfortable balancing the setup on your lap? I dont think it will.
My only other wish is that PC games can play Wii gamers as that will be a reak test to see if it is better then a mouse!!!

I play quite a bit of FPS using a controller.

07-24-2006 #17Agreed, I think a mouse still beats the Wii-mote, but the Wii-mote comes pretty close, and with enough practice you could rival a mouse-user.

And I really don't enjoy it with dual analog sticks. I'm so used to the perfect accuracy of the mouse that I feel like I'm fighting the controller to get it to aim right. Games like Battlefront give me lock-on to compensate for the terrible control of dual analogs.
Gamers who've used a mouse often know how good it works. I've rocket jumped and sniped three people with headshots before I hit the ground on Star Trek: Voyager: Elite Force (Quake 3 engine).

I've hardly played any games on a PC and when I do I use a game pad sold by logitech. I just was brought up on gamepads being that my first console was the Nintendo Entertainment System and every Nintendo console since. Although Playstation 2 was my console of choice during the Gamecube's time. I just feel akward using a mouse even though I know a lot of people enjoy its accuracy. I just can't wait to see how Red Steel feels when playing. It promises to be a one of a kind gaming experience from the looks of it so far.

This remote probably will be like most anything else. You just have to get used to it. Though I wonder if once you get used to it you won't find yourself swinging your other remotes around in a bane attempt to move your on screen characer/vehicle.

Which would be what Nintendo is going for, if that happens it means that they will have improved controllers for the forseeable future as other pads will seem inferior, due to their lack of interactivity. Its already happening with the PS3 and im 99.9% positive the next xbox will have motion sensing. In my mind I believe that Sony didnt want to put motion sensing into the PS3's controller. As everyone knows Sony had been researching this for years, and you cant just invent tech in a few weeks. I think this was an idea to be implemented into the PS4, but Nintendo forced Sony's hand. More interaction with a game can only be good.

This won't become any more repetitive than pressing a button, you can be sure about that, it'll probably feel less repetitive.

I was playing some Guitar Hero last night (for my first time, great game), and it's amazing how anyone can just pick up and play that game. Girls, guys who don't play video games, parents, etc. And everyone has a blast with it.
Why is that? I think it's because it's a whole lot more interactive--and easier to use--than chilling with a game pad.
Nintendo is on to something big with the Wiimote. I'll keep my 360 for "hardcore" gaming, but I think the Wii will be the undisputed king for "social" gaming.
