To all of you who bought a BluRay, it looks like you bought a good movie and can look forward to a great experience come November.

It sounded good but has been tested. To me the sammy is just not a good player. It is defintely not worthy of representing the whole format.

My current Blu Ray concern is when will DL BD movies arrive. Sorry for posting the same info that I posted in the Official Blu Ray thread but Best Buy has a November date for Black Hawk Down.

I never doubted BluRay but I know there were loads of people who were ready to turn their backs, probably because of all the fuss about the quality. I am one who likes to believe what he sees, not what he hears. So, come November, I will be seeing alot of cool media with some very impressive quality. Good work on the post and the article find Lefein.

The chip problem doesn't make much of a difference.
A review was done with the replaced chip and the difference was minor. The problem is MPEG-2 compression on BD25 discs.
I've tested out some Blu-Ray titles and the quality definitely is lacking. So far most HD-DVD titles give a much better picture quality.
BD needs VC-1 compression or BD50 discs (if they want to keep using MPEG-2). BD25 and MPEG2 is not a good combination.

Since when codec is decisive on the picture quality- only when comparing the same bitrate.
The only problem with mpeg2 movies is that they are poorly encoded

When terabit bit transfer ISPs are established. I went to the university and I watched a study on light. There is this current study in which they created a mechanism for the internet that does 100 tb/s downloads. WE HAVEN'T EVEN HIT TERRABIT HDD IN THE MAINSTREAM YET! they just need to figure out how to make it cheaper.

The samsung player does not have a defect.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=704042
this guy spoke to samsung.
The defect is 25gb BD discs using mpeg2.
p.s. I normally skip over Lefein's posts as he is the most insane sony fanboy on these forums, but I couldnt ignore the entire thread

08-01-2006 #13It has not been tested after any attempt to correct the problem.

We'll update this review as soon as the firmware fix becomes available.

08-01-2006 #15No disrespect to the poster on AVS Forum, but this issue has been confirmed by multiple reliable sources.

According to a statement just released by Samsung, the reason for the softness we reported on in the preceding review of the BD-P1000 is an incorrect default setting in the noise reduction on a Genesis chip used in the player.
This is not a user-accessible setting. Samsung will revise the chip programming in the next production run of the players, and is also working on a firmware update for existing players. The update may be downloaded from the Samsung website onto a CD-ROM, which is then used to transfer the update to the player.
But don't expect it soon. A Samsung representative estimated that it might be September before the update is available, and likely September as well before the second batch of players, incorporating the change, will hit the shelves at your local dealer. We will report on the effectiveness of the update as soon as we receive it.
So it looks like another couple of months before we'll see a properly functioning Blu-ray player from any source. It appears that Samsung's first out of the gate status deserves less praise than I gave it in my conclusion.
Not to mention the two other links in this thread. Also, it has been confirmed that the same BD looks much better on the Pioneer BD player than on the Samsung. There are PQ issues with all but one of the BD titles released so far, but there's also a PQ issue with the Samsung player.
It would be bad news for Samsung if the PQ issue wasn't a bug. It would mean that the player is just poor quality.
EDIT: To fix link

I never doubted Blu-Ray. I'm glad I didn't get an early one though
. At least we know we're not missing anything until PS3. Sooo, farrrr, awayyy
Setup of a college gamer short on cash:
20GB PS3 (with 160GB HDD), Acer 22" Monitor, Logitech Z-2300 speakers with harmon/kardon rear speakers connected to a Creative X-fi 5.1 card, Logitech Driving Force GT Racing Wheel, and a ton of racing games with a few FPSes sprinkled in.

I still am a Blu-Ray supporter. I know the hardware will live up to all the hype over HD-DVDs, but the software needs to get some issues straight.

About the VC-1 thing and mpeg 4 thing, this is blu-ray's official stance:
1.8 What video codecs will Blu-ray support?
MPEG-2 - enhanced for HD, also used for playback of DVDs and HDTV recordings.
MPEG-4 AVC - part of the MPEG-4 standard also known as H.264 (High Profile and Main Profile).
SMPTE VC-1 - standard based on Microsoft's Windows Media Video (WMV) technology.
Please note that this simply means that all Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these video codecs, it will still be up to the movie studios to decide which video codec(s) they use for their releases.PSN ID: solinent | I accept all friend requests! |
*insert generic quote about the ps3 taking over including bold for maximum effect (colors and size changes also apply)*

HD DVD vs. BluRay -- High-def Digest
HD DVD wins the first round according to these guys:

Pretty much minor quibbles, but still interesting to see what the early press is saying about a direct comparison.
