PlayStation Network “Import Store” Sets Sail Soon

PlayStation Network “Import Store” Sets Sail Soon

    Chad Awkerman | Sep 16, 2010 | Comments 0

I’m always on the look out for titles coming over from Japan, because many times the publishers (and developers, really) of those niche titles are smaller and need all the media coverage they can get. Imagine my surprise when reading through a press release sent out this afternoon from MonkeyPaw Games.
The press release states that “on September 21st, Sony Computer Entertainment America will release the first games on a new service called Imports on the PlayStation Store”. Say what? You heard that right. Is this something new? I’ve never seen it or heard about it before in my life. Sure, I’ve heard of MonkeyPaw Games, a new publisher dedicated to bringing smaller, retro Japanese titles over to North America. But, an import store on the PSN? Who would have thought I’d ever see the day!
The first two games available, in their original, unlocalized glory, will be Cho Aniki and GaiaSeed, both published on the PSN import store by MonkeyPaw Games. To explain a little bit about these titles, let’s take a look at the press release, because I couldn’t explain it if I tried.
Cho Aniki was a title considered just too weird for publishers to gamble on. It is also a damn funny game that borders on sensory overload. The game is a challenging shooter that will “shock and awe” you into laughter. If you’re like me, you’ll wonder WTF the designers were thinking of when they came up with some of the scenes you’ll take on. No doubt, you’ll have something to talk about with your shooter buddies. Take the plunge!
GaiaSeed is for the pure shooter enthusiast. Remember the days when shooters ruled the skies? When you get your hands on this one, you’ll be taken back to that era and she’ll fit like an old glove. Supremely smooth with a silky techo backbeat, GaiaSeed is one of those lost gems that would and should have become a classic. The game is guaranteed to satisfy again and again.
A few other little gems of information were also found in this particular press release, such as the fact that we should look forward to “a steady stream of untouchable titles you dreamed of playing but were relegated to reading about”. It piques your interest, doesn’t it?
As a final reminder, if indeed this PSN import store goes live on September 21st and you want to pick up these games, they are completely untranslated Japanese titles, so, as the presser warns, “Buyer beware: you’ll need to use your gaming instinct and intuition to maneuver your way around the Japanese text. But we’ve focused on titles that are easy to navigate.”
So, less than a month after I hounded Sony about allowing us to download Japanese titles – unlocalized – to our PS3s through the PSN, we get this. Maybe they read my article. Or…maybe not.
Stay tuned here for what we assume to be an incoming official announcement by Sony. I can’t see them letting this one fly under the radar, that would defeat the entire purpose.

I guess SCEA realized the should do something about all of the PS3's connecting to other region's PSN stores.
