Source.Sony Corp., the maker of the PlayStation 3, sees “very, very strong” Christmas holiday sales for its video-game consoles in Europe, said Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment in the region.
The company expects to exceed its target of sales of 15 million PS3s in its fiscal year, aided by “strong demand” in Europe and North America, House said in a Bloomberg Television interview in Rome.
“Sales have been significantly up year-on-year in a market that has been overall slightly down,” he said.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe distributes and markets Sony’s gaming products in 99 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania. Since the launch of PlayStation 3 in November 2006, the company has sold more than 38 million units globally, according to an Oct. 13 statement.
Sony, based in Tokyo, and Microsoft Corp., maker of the Xbox, are introducing motion-activated products to compete with Nintendo Co.’s industry-leading Wii console. Sony unveiled its Move motion-activated peripherals on Sept. 19, while Microsoft will begin selling a motion-sensing peripheral called Kinect in November.
Move has had “very significant sales in the first month since launch, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million units for the new controller across just Europe,” House said. “The initial sales response has been so far in excess of our initial plan that we’ll probably be looking at accelerating production.”
Sony make a profit on every Move controller sold. Sounds like its doing much better than we thought.

Move is the second coming of Wiisus Christ. The reason Move is selling so much is that at it's core the technology works. Under many different lighting conditions, works with 3D TV's, has buttons and when implemented correctly ala Sports Champions the 1:1 is flawless!
I can see word of mouth being a continuing factor in creating sales as we go on. It has that wow factor of the Wii alright, but at the end of the day it works.Last edited by mickice; 10-14-2010 at 22:09.

Well hes not going to say that they arent going to hit 15 million

They have racked up I think from memory 5 million this year, with 6 months to go. 10 million? maybe if they can hit a 7/3 split for Xmas/post Xmas.
Was just thinking 1.5 million units, its a hard number to quantify as people who have actual move enabled PS3's however.
Some may have 2 or even 4 moves.
So the number could be anywhere between 400k and 1.5 million actuall move enabled PS'3.
Ah to dam complex for a friday
Why woudlnt it work with 3d tvs?

Well, Wii and Kinect both use Infra-Red technology and they will interfere with the Infra-Red emitters used with the 3D glasses on a 3D set.
It's actually quite genius how Move doesn't use infra-red and is compatible with 3D sets. Well good for SONY who is trying to shift 3D TV's left right and center and right now theres like 3x as many games then there is movies in 3D

Move did a hell of a lot better then first anticipated. I'm sure that it will continue to sell adequately once we get more, Move games.

Alot of these sales are probably thanks to Sports Champions being so awesome. You really couldn't ask for more from a launch title.

10-14-2010 #12No thank you. I'll be gaming on a stronger console for $100 cheaper instead

Sony trolled MS. PS4 fans didn't do it. We just laughed at MS and anyone getting mad. $399 FTW!

I already had the camera from EyePet so I only bought 1 stand alone Move controller. I would have to add owning more than 1 controller is also what helped it reach 1.5million. I will be owning a second controller when The Fight: Lights Out is released.

"we got all your bases are covered" or something along the lines of that famous quote, wow I remember at first that no infared was considered a con because universal controls were not compatible with ps3. Now it seems like it's all been a strategic plan unraveling for Sony all along
I just like how they just do what they want, and kind of forsee what the future tech is going, hit or miss but I appreciate the risk unlike other corps that just throw something out there just to tall marketshare hddvd what did that bring to the table nothing to the consumers
