Hsu: New Vegas Review Pulled Due to Pressure, Bethesda Denies

It's no secret that the nature of game journalism forces outlets to rely more on developers and publishers than they should. Information bottlenecks compel news organizations to stay in the good graces of the people in control of information, lest they lose their exclusive access, advertising, or review copies.

Sometimes that close proximity between news makers and news reporters can go wrong. Remember the firing of Jeff Gerstmann, who was allegedly fired for giving a negative review to Kane & Lynch, despite reports from GameSpot denying the allegations.

A new controversy may have emerged regarding the recent release of Fallout: New Vegas and its subsequent review coverage. According to Bitmob Co-Founder Dan Hsu via his Twitter feed, at least one site pulled down an unfavorable review of New Vegas, allegedly due to pressure from Bethesda, publisher of the title.

Hsu would not reveal his two sources nor the publication in question due to fears of repercussions to the sources in question.

According to Hsu, Bethesda has since categorically denied the allegations. You can check out his feed here, or check out the important tweets regarding the issue below.

If some more people start talking, this could turn into quite the story. Stay tuned to gamrFeed for any updates.

I was never into Fallout games anyway, but if/when this is true Bethesda should rot in hell.

I've read the game has more bugs than practically any game that gets released, but still it sort of gets free pass...

I did some digging and it turns out the one that was pulled might have been IGN's review. It would make sense since it's one of the biggest gaming sites around.

I remember a certain PS3 launch game that got ripped apart because of the technical issues. And IMO the new MOH is a perfect example. It has serious technical issues, but the game is still very playable and arguably pretty good. The issues in that game make it seem like it's the most polished game ever when compared to New Vegas

What can you say? That's business and it has already been done times and times again. In most cases, however, the truth won't reach the public because of inside pressures. This is nothing new.

Yes this dirty stuff goes on with all companies. Its called saving face, they all do it one way or another. Nothing new. But on the other hand IGN's review was quite positive. Unless they posted a different review than intended. They called out the bugs but every review under the sun calls out the bugs. I call them out as well but I still love the game.

This sorta thing ain't new, mate. That's why I don't follow reviews scores. I rely solely on demos and word of mouth.
Fap once, still hard? Challenge accepted!

LOL. Your reply sounds like one you would get from the CEO that pulled his sites review

    j/k

Still this sucks and certainly shows you can't trust major sites reviews that much anymore. The less advertising on the site --> more reliable review.

I've gone to PSXExtreme.com for my reviews for a long time now. They write some good ****

ha, I knew it was because of glitches straight from reading the title..yeah, nothing new on my end, i've encoutered quite a few glitches, but none as annoying as game freezes..Fallout 3 all over again..at least it doesn't freeze when you get a PSN notification that one of your buddies is online..still, needs A LOT of fixing and patch updates...it's taking a while, but hopefully, because they're testing it further...see how I worded that? Kinda like Jim Gordon when he was up on the rooftop talking to the female detective about the dark knight not responding to the bat signal "he's not coming, because hopefully he's out there catching bad guys" dun dun dun!

IGN's review is still up i checked it after reading the story it looks like it's 1up who have taken theres down

IGN scores are 9 from uk site and 8.5 from the US

it's the way the business rolls these days look at what happened with the kane & lynch review gamespot fiasco, it's a shame really because were the ones loosing out because we get poor game experiances which review sites don't tend to tell us about
although i'm playing fallout:NV on my pc and i think it's great apart from the 3 crashes i've had it in my first 12 hours but it's forgivable, although i hear the console versions are worse!

so what would have IGN said? It's the same engine graphics and more glitches? that's why they would give it a low score? those are really minor issues even though they do get annoying when you get the glitches..

I just don't get Fallout in general. I've played Fallout 3 and found it boring and repetitive, kinda like the Elder Scrolls. New Vegas looked like a carbon copy, except with a las vegas back drop. Big whoop. I could see why reviewers would give it a big "meh".

I don't really need a water cooler/remote control as of right now.

Why are reviewers so intimidated by another company. Geezes, you know, some people are just mental wimps. I would tell Bethesda to **** off, they could if they wanted to, take me to court, but they wont win anything because it was my take on a video game, it doesn't pass through laws at all. If they pulled the review because of pressure, they are wimps/cowards/wusses/babies.

But then again, where are the letters, messages, emails, etc etc from them telling them to pull the review down or causing them pressure to do it. Surely in order for Bethesda to put pressure on there has to be emails or something, something with the evidence to prove it. I mean, it's not like they used telepathy or anything.

The Sun newspaper here in the Uk gave it a 3/5 they said even thou it's great edition for fans the same graphics make it feel like a giant expansion pack and I have to agree it slightly does feel like one.

I'll probably now wait till next year when a GOTY edition comes to PC right now I am back into PS3 gaming while finishing off the PC version of Fallout 3 and it's DLC.
